Our first ever Universal Orlando trip is in 9 days and I have a kid with the flu! I am worried that the rest of the family will get it next! I have enjoyed planning the trip so much and we are all looking so forward to it! Have any of you traveled with a sick kid?? If one is sick do we all stay home or go with a sick one?? I have a feeling my plane tickets are non refundable! AHHH !! I would appreciate good thoughts and prayers!!
Thanks!

9days should be lond enough for everyone to get over it just take plenty of fluids now to help combat it:jester:

Have you heard about using oil of oregano (brand name Oreganol) to help ward off the flu? You just take a few drops morning and night and it has been tested to be more effective than any prescription medicine available for the flu. There is a lot of info about it up here in Canada where the flu is pretty rampant right now. It boosts your immunity but at the same time it is a powerful germ killer.

I would bring the flu medication on the trip with you for peace of mind. It doesn't make it less likely that you'll get the flu, but it shortens the duration by a day or so. Better than nothing.

I was the only family member to get the flu shot this year and the only one to get sick so far. I don't know for sure that I had the flu, but I had most of the symtoms. I washed my hands a lot, used Lysol wipes on the door handles daily and did whatever else I could think of not to pass the virus on to the rest of my family.

Good luck!

Thanks for that damo. I'll see if they have it here in England. I had the worst flu a few weeks ago.....in bed for 5 days....it was a nightmare. Fortunately the children didn't get it and I think that was a lot to do with washing my hands in anti-bacterial handwash, keeping the window wide open and discouraging the children to come into the bedroom. 9 children so far have been killed by this unusual flu so far and it's sweeping across the Country still.

tdelano - hopefully 9 days will be long enough for your son or daughter to recover...but I do strongly recommend the anti-bacterial handwash, then hopefully the rest of the family will not get it. Good luck.

We all fought off colds this week. DS, 14, who is very active athletically always gets a fall and spring cold that turns into a bronchial cough that ends up needing some sort of perscription after about three weeks of hacking. This year, the sneezing started and I immediately started him on Oregonal and Zicam (a zinc goop that you put in your nose). His cold never progressed into more that an itchy throat cough for 1 day and three days after the initial sneezing day you would never have known that he had a cold. We have never found anything before that worked like that. DH had a six country/4 day business trip in Europe and came back all stuffed up and exhausted and achy. I put him through the same ritual as DS and he too avoided getting the full blown cold. Coincidence, maybe, but definitely worth a try.

Start pushing the enchincea to the rest of the family. It may boost your imunity and keep all of you healthy. We swear by it at our house. Good luck!

This is an interesting thread. A friend swears by echincea too. I also have read that ginger is very good and so is chicken soup!

There are anti-viral medications that your physician can prescribe that markedly lessen the length and severity of your flu symptoms. I am assuming you are talking about influenza and not "stomach flu" or something like that.

One of the medications I have seen used is Tamiflu. I work in a clinic and many of our patients had remarkable recovery using this last year. You have to use it within the first 24 hours of coming down with the flu. As with anything, homeopathic treatments included, there can be side effects. But if it were my expensive vacation on the line I would check into this as soon as possible!!

Good luck,

Nan

You should all be fine. Have everyone take vitamins and OJ for the next 9 days. It works wonders.

Nine days should be time to get back to health but sending good thoughts your way:jester: :D

Best wishes and I hope it does not go through the whole family.

We have just returned from a week and US, IOA, and WDW parks. There seemed to be a lot of people coughing and sneezing while we were there. My daughter started coughing so I got her some cough drops at the shop at BW. I went to get more the next day and they were sold out. The girl at the shop said there were a lot of people that week in buying medicine for colds. Now we all have head colds. :crazy2: We still ended up coming home one day early due to the snow storm in the east.

Hope you have a magical trip and sending some pixie dust to you and your family!!!!!!

The flu has been brutal this year, but good wishes coming your way...

The incubation period for the influenza thing going around is 2-3 days...it is a nasty bugger. If caught in the first 24-36 hours, they can give antivirals.

Be careful with the herbs and such, we have been seeing people in the clinic I work at with some adverse reactions because they are overdosing themselves to ward off the flu.

Wash your hands, wash your hands!

That reminds me, people think I'm nuts, but I always hum or sing to myself the entire Happy Birthday song while scrubbing my hands so that I am sure to do a thorough job (I have heard of others singing Yankee Doodle for the same purpose) The point is, more than a lick and a promise is needed. Wherever possible, portion the paper towels before washing to avoid touching the lever after handwashing and use the paper towel to shut off the water to avoid recontamination.

In addition to washing your hands, try to limit the number of surfaces that you touch with your hands, especially in public places. I try to use my elbows and feet whenever possible when going in and out of doors and such. If I have to use my hand, I try to touch an out of the way spot on the door (ie not the handle) or use a paper towel from the restroom. I'm assuming that everyone knows not to use their hands to flush a public toilet...right?!

Florida was actually on our "news" on Friday showing lines of people waiting for injections and they said many people had died with it. Similar situation in England - 9 children so far between toddler age and teen. I was ill for a week with it as you know - worst flu I have ever had I think.

No one in Florida has died from it, but a proactive approach was taken and the local government gave out 5,000 free flu shots.

Wish they were more pro-active over here. No free shots - except for elderly!
