FLU SHOTS? Not me...

nope. don't believe i've ever had the flu either. I might have when I was younger and don't remember anything other than being sick. I had Lyme's Disease when I was 6, and don't remember that at all, so dont tell me "I would remember if I had it." If I don't remember Lyme's I wont remember the flu. My mom didn't vaccinate us asides from the major ones when we were little, and I've been fine. Shes also a home care nurse, and sees sick people 7 days a week. She doesn't get the flu shot either, and she's never had the flu.

What happens if you get the flu shot and you've got a cold or infection?

Who Should Not Be Vaccinated

People who have a moderate-to-severe illness with a fever (they should wait until they recover to get vaccinated.)

http://www.cdc.gov/FLU/about/qa/flushot.htm
You can get the flu shot with a cold.
If you are sick with a fever when you go to get your flu shot, you should talk to your doctor or nurse about getting your shot at a later date. However, you can get a flu shot at the same time you have a respiratory illness without fever or if you have another mild illness.

I think they say to postpone it if you are dealing with a moderate to severe illness since your immune system is already compromised. You should not introduce another reason (flu shot) to tax your immune system further.

I have had the flu twice in my life and it was the 2 years I had gotten flu shots. I got both shots in October and got the flu both times in Feb. I know everyone says you can't get the flu from the shots, but like you, I will not be getting a flu shot.

My doctor said the flu shot is only good for 3 months. That could be why you got it in February. :confused3

Year before last I got sick and my arm swelled really big. I tried again last year and didn't have any reaction. We are getting them next Tuesday here at work.

I think people who say they got the flu BECAUSE of the shot really mean they got the flu IN SPITE of the shot.
.

Funny how YOU think YOU know what people mean when THEY say.

Being rude is almost as sickening as the flu.

Now, there's a shot we all need.... 3 months of protections from rude-ness.

DH & I get the shot every year. My DD's got the mist this year & they had no problems. Both of my parents & my brother have cancer, so I don't have a choice.

Hey, to each their own. As long as you stay home when you are sick & don't contaminate me, I don't care if you get the shot or not.

I don't get them either. I do find the annual hype entertaining though.

First, we are told we must get the shots or we will all die of the flu. Then there is the inevitable shortage of vaccine, and we are told that it's really not all that critical for all of us to get the shot, and we should refrain from getting it if we aren't old, young or otherwise compromised. And then, once the supply is up again, it suddenly becomes important to get immunized. But then they find out that the flu strains used in the shot are the wrong ones, so maybe we don't need it after all...

I have never gotten sick after a flu shot and I never got the flu the years I got the shot. But the one year I *didn't* get my shot I had two different strains of flu , followed by pneumonia both times. It took me about 4 months to recover!

No thanks. I'll take my chances with the shot.

Me too! To make it worse I got the flu last time in Disney and there was so much flu @WDW they were calling it the Florida flu.
I had complained many times that I had the flu but until you really have it it is like comparing headaches vs. migraines.

My family & I were in the WL for 7 days, 103 fever, chills, vomiting, headache and so much pain especially in my back & neck.
When the Florida doctor said I was well enough to fly home it was with strep & double ear infections.....pneumonia kicked in about 7 days after that.
If you have ever had pneumonia or suffer from chronic broncitis they push you to get the flu shot as well as is your "older" or you immunity is low.

Those with compromised health should also get the pneumonia shot - on the scheduled basis your doctor feels is best for your particular situation.. (Some can get it every 5 years - others need to get it more often..)

DH got his yesterday and I will be getting mine at some point. I work for the city in the school department and they have times when city workers can get them. Working with all those kids...you can be sure I will be getting mine.
This will be the 5 year in a row I will have gotten one and have never had a problem.

Not true.
Does getting vaccinated against flu early in the season pose a risk that immunity may wane before the end of the season?

Flu vaccination provides protection against the influenza strains contained in the vaccine through one influenza season. Vaccination can begin as soon as vaccine is available. Studies have not demonstrated a benefit of receiving more than one dose during an influenza season, even among elderly persons with weakened immune systems.

My kids got theirs 2 weeks ago, I got mine yesterday. No problems!

I was a big NO on the flu shots for many many years. I remember in 1990 my MIL had gotten her flu shot right before Thanksgiving. We had all planned a huge Thanksgiving Feast and MIL became soooo sick from the flu shot she could not join us for the holiday. :sad1: It bothered me for so long after that that I decided NOPE on the flu shot. :sad2:

2006 My family was planning a two week trip to London and Paris for Christmas and New Years. We started planning in July and as the Fall arrived we all started discussing getting the flu shot because of our travel plans. So off to my MD for the shot and believe you me I really wanted no part of it. :sad2:

Well it worked out absolutely FINE. :goodvibes No reactions whatsoever from anyone and we all traveled to the UK and Paris and no one was sick with even a sniffle. :woohoo:

2007 Right back again for the flu shot. ::yes:: So now I am going in 2 weeks for 2008!!! ::yes::

:thumbsup2 for the FLU SHOT!!!

Our workplace gave flu shots about 5 years ago, I had one and within an hour I was sick and went home, where I spent the next 2 days sick.

The next year, I got the shot again and passed out at work, another 3 days off.

I'll take my chances getting the flu.

I'm glad this thread keeps popping up.. It reminded me to make sure the shot is available at my next appointment..:thumbsup2

Actually, I think this year they are recommending more of the population to get the shot, supply is plentiful, and since last year wasn't a bad season (although it was the worst flu - shot - only 50%), they're predicting a bad season this year.

That's the point. They always recommend that more of the population get the shot at the beginning of the season, and then it later becames apparent that their isn't enough vaccine, and then it magically becomes less important.

It is always predicted to be a bad season this year.
