Flu shot 10 days before flying to disney yes or no?

NOOOOOO

Every person I have talked to has had a reaction and ended up getting sick!

I'd wait and take some Lysol wipes with you.

And I say BS! to those of you who say you can't get the flu from the vaccine. It can sure make you feel pretty blasted crappy. And I'm talking fever, chills, aches etc...

Myself and my 4 children have gotten it for the past 6yrs and have never gotten sick........now my husband who never gets it (out of lazyness) always gets the flu.
It takes about 2wks to work, so it is possible to get the flu in the 2wk time period.

I would absolutely get it before - think of all the germs you'll be exposed to on your trip. It will be great to have the extra protection.

It doesn't protect you from anything other than one strain of the flu virus.

The current immunization protects against 3 strains of flu virus.

For evidence-based and comprehensive information:

While the BEST level of protective antibodies is present about 2 weeks after a flu shot, some immune response happens sooner and would help some, at least. I think of it this way - all of the antibodies aren't just sitting around watching a calendar in order to magically pop out from behind the curtain at the 2 week mark.. more and more get made until there is an adequate number to do their important work. This takes a little while - about 2 weeks, but 10 days is better than nothing, in my opinion. Information re: specifics of timing also covered in some of the CDC links above.

Get the shot. They had on the news here (central Illinois) that people are already going to urgent care with the flu. I got mine a couple days ago and feel fine, my daughter had a slight runny nose last night (she claims it's from the shot, I say allergies).

I would get it and we all did about 1-2 weeks before. The shot take I think 14 days to make it through your system and start working. Disney is an amazing place but a germ fest!

Take some meds with you in case but would recommend it.

Get the shot! I ended up just getting it at Target last Friday for $18. My ds11 and dd12 got theirs at the peds office. So today, ds and I are home with a mild flu.

I don't think it was caused by the shot, just a coincidence. We catch EVERYTHING that's out there...lol.

My dh insists that the flu shots give you the flu. There's no evidence to it, just coincidences I think.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to get the flu from a flu shot. It is made with a dead virus.

Americans really need to spend more time learning basic science.

I got mine on my lunch hour two hours before we were leaving for vacation. No problem.

I think the shots take a couple of weeks to give you full immunity, so the sooner the better.

This is the flu myth most likely to drive experts bonkers. There is simply no way that the flu vaccine can give you the flu. It’s impossible.”

Why? For one, injected flu vaccines only contain dead virus, and a dead virus is, well, dead: it can’t infect you. There is one type of live virus flu vaccine, the nasal vaccine, FluMist. But in this case, the virus is specially engineered to remove the parts of the virus that make people sick.

Despite the scientific impossibility of getting the flu from the flu vaccines, this widespread flu myth won’t die. Experts suspect two reasons for its persistence. One, people mistake the side effects of the vaccine for flu. While side effects to the vaccine these days tend to be a sore arm, in the past, side effects often felt like mild symptoms of the flu. Two, flu season coincides with a time of year when bugs causing colds and other respiratory illnesses are in the air. Many people get the vaccine and then, within a few days, get sick with an unrelated cold virus. However, they blame the innocent flu vaccine, rather than their co-worker with a runny nose and cough.

My insurance co will only pay for a flu shot from a participating provider . Cheaper to go to the doctor to get it fir me.

Would absolutely get the vaccine before the trip. You don't get the flu from getting a flu shot. My son had a vaccine reaction to HIb and I am a freak about vaccinations - but those of us who can get one get the flu shot each year

I posted this on the budget board because I am saving on my copays and going to the county flu clinic. There is a clinic exactely 10 days before we leave for Disney. We have never had side effects (flulike symptoms) after receiving the flu shot. So I chance it or do I get the shots when we get back? What's your opinion?
thanks

Yes, I would have it as soon as possible. Even if you get any side effects, they will be gone in a few days.

Shot - YES absolutely!!

FluMist - I probably wouldn't, but I think I am abnormally panicky about the mist. It scares me for some reason (luckily, we generally aren't offered it so never had to pick).

I'm needle-phobic so I am considering getting the nasal spray. Would like to avoid the flu this year!

Currently I'm recovering from bronchitis but would like to get the vaccine at least a few weeks before leaving for Disney. Probably will go on my next paycheck a couple weeks from now!

Why bump a nearly 2 year old thread?

I didn't realize it was an old thread until you mentioned it. I also have the same dilemma. In fact I posted early last month about it (wondering if I should get the vaccine in early September).

My work will probably offer the vaccine for free right before our WDW trip. I'll take it then. I've had no reaction to the vaccine, and I do want to get the vaccine before we leave.

If the vaccine isn't offered until I get home, I'll wait until then. If necessary, I'll wait until my next doctor's appointment in early December.
