We just returned from a cruise on the Dream - 4 night Bahamian that set sail on Mon. January 25th.

6 of the 8 people in our traveling party came down with the flu toward the end of the cruise. My 15 month old and I are still horribly sick. Just wondering if anyone else was on this cruise and experienced illness?

This was our 4th cruise and the first time we have dealt with contracting any kind of illness onboard - and what a nasty bug it is!

Are you referring to influenza or a gastrointestinal illness?

So sorry you all got sick while on a cruise, BrownieBites. Bad thing is that right now IS flu season. At work yesterday I heard story after story of who all had been sick and all described a very nasty GI bug. So it's certainly going around. I find DCL extra careful about cleanliness, right down to how they have someone posted at the door of each restaurant to be sure and had each and every person a sanitizing wipe. But when folks come on board either already sick or in a contagious state, unfortunately sickness can spread much like in a school or workplace. I am a bug on very good hand washing because of a healthcare background, but even with that I still catch a bug once in a while. Hope you are better soon!!

With it only being a 4 day cruise, chances are you contracted the flu before getting on board.

Sorry your sick. But this should be a wake up call for people who didn't get the flu shot. Get the flu shot if you can.

We were on the 18 Jan four day sail on the Dream. I put my daughter in the nursery for two hours on that Wed night & when I went to pick her up, I heard one of the toddlers' nasty cough. I died a little on the inside. I knew that she prob picked up something while in there....sure enough Sat night my daughter's cold started. Sunday, my son's cold started & by Sun night, I fell victim. Oy vey. Just the price we pay I guess. We are just now getting over it...

Sorry that you all were sick not how you want to spend your vacation. I guess it's more common than advertised.

Our two youngest kids get sick EVERY time we go on a cruise. Usually a bad cold that they have for four weeks after. They have all possible immunization s and I sanitize the cabins, but it just never fails.

16% efficacy rate this year. What a joke.
I don't think the effectiveness rate for this year's flu vaccine has been determined yet. Last year (2014/2015) the effectiveness was originally predicted to be 23% but that was lowered to 18%. I don't think this year's (2015/2016) effectiveness has been figured out yet.

The flu shot used to be better when I was younger. I dont need the governments statistics to know the flu shot is useless. The kids still get it but its useless. Dh gets it at work free. I dont bother unless I walk in somewhere and they are giving it out free.

I'm so sorry that you all ended up sick. Not the way that you want to end your vacation. :(

We had a group of 12 family and friends that all met in Vegas in early January. Of the 12 of us, 10 ended up getting sick either the last day or within a few days of getting home. There is just so much going around this time of year.

Some folks on my Jan 24 Southern Caribbean on the Wonder got sick with a flu (not noro) as well. Lots of nasty hacks on debarkation day and reports from other cruise passengers. My boyfriend and I were and are fine, luckily. I also bring a pump of anti-bacterial soap for my stateroom, since the bars they provide are not anti-bacterial. I sanitize my cabin with Clorox wipes and am very careful about not touching handrails/elevator buttons/door handles and then touching my face or eating. I have a relatively poor immune system, so I feel like if I can avoid getting sick on a cruise ship with a flu, anyone can. It does take a lot of extra steps but I think it's worth it, but then again when I get sick I get way sicker than most people.

Please do not use antibacterial soap. It's a big problem because it's causing resistant bacteria. Washing with soap and water will take care of things. You don't need the antibacterial soap. More harm than good.

By that logic, you must skip using sani-wipes... You're thinking of triclosan btw, which has been phased out of most anti-bacterial soaps. I follow my doctor's advice, and they advise me to bring and use anti-bacterial soaps while on vacation and in my home. Before I started following that line of advice, I got sick on nearly every vacation I ever went on.

If it's antibacterial, it must have some sort of antibacterial agent in it (thus leading to resistant bacteria). The sani wipes are just alcohol. There's no antibacterial agent in it.

I used to get sick every time we went to WDW. I would end up with cold symptoms and be miserable. I then learned that I was likely picking up something on the airplane. Over the past few years I have brought Clorox wipes (or whatever brand) onto the plane, wiped down the seat backs, tray tables, belt buckles, and arm rests. I also put Neosporin (or Vaseline) in my nostrils with a q-tip (flying dries out mucus membranes which are an important barrier to germs) and stayed hydrated while flying. Myself and my children (and my parents and sister who travel with me) have not been ill since. It seems like a lot of work but it really takes only a minute or two. Maybe it's placebo, or we have just been lucky these past few years but it doesn't matter to me.

This might seem like a stupid question, but do they MAKE you take sanitary wipes for your hands? I hate those darn things as they dry out my skin like crazy. I avoid sanitizer. I'd rather just go wash my hands.
