My Mom is moving to Kentucky at the end of April. So, we've decided to have a going away/birthday party for her with a flower theme. I need help coming up with ideas. Especially for decorations. And within a small budget. Help! Any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Get a flat of flowers and small pots from the dollar store. Tie a ribbon on each pot and plant one of the plants from the flat in it. Put one at every place setting and it makes a beautiful table decoration.:cutie:

Great idea! But we are doing a buffet so no place settings. I could use them as decorations on the buffet table and them give them as party favors though. Thanks!

Did you make paper flowers out of crepe paper as a child?...It is very easy and I am sure you could find how online or in a simple craft book. Oriental trading has small pots to paint, if you are looking for an activity, and they often have other activity kits featuring a flower motif. That's all I could think of. :flower3:

Hey...Hawaian leis perhaps?

We've made chocolate flowers and placed them in cheap clay pots. This can be a centerpiece as well as a snack or a party favor to take home. Very cute and easy!

I am doing a bridal shower soon...pray for me! I am using various wine and goblets upside down with a flower underneath and a votive candle on the base as decorations.. saw it in a book or online somewhere and loved it!

You could also put a bunch on the center of every table. This way each person there has a favor and it is a centerpiece.

Use many, many candles (get at dollar store) all shapes and sizes with the holders all shapes and sizes (get at thrift shops) with lots and lots of ivy (maybe you know someone with it in their yard?) trailing all through it. Do this on the buffet table, and points around the house like large side table and mantles and the porch entrance.

Put the themed flowers of your choice in all through the ivy. (You can also just use random flowers, just make sure the colors don't clash)

You can also make individual vases with the flowers and ivy put around also.

With this theme, MORE, not less - is MORE. :thumbsup2

With the candles lit, it is very pretty.

I did this one year for my Mom's birthday (she is a BIG flower and gardening person) and she loved it.

Seed packets with a small tag attached would also be a good favor (although I am one who believes that favors aren't always necessary).

I second the tissue paper flower idea. It is a Mexican tradition of some sort to have tissue paper flowers at fiestas. My DNiece married a Texan (not of Mexican heritage, but I guess they are familiar with lots of Mexican traditions, due to their close proximity) and his Mom and Grandmother made lots of beautiful paper flowers for their rehearsal dinner and explained the tradition. Each of the ladies got to take a flower home. They were beautiful and festive.

A layer cake decorated with fresh flowers could be your dessert as well as the centerpiece of your buffet table.

Choose flowers that are less expensive (like carnations, daisies, pansies) and use LOTS of them. If you want to dress it up a bit, you could add just a few accent flowers like Stargazer lilies, gerbera daisies, or roses... but those will cost you much more per piece.

I just thought of a centerpiece I received at a baby shower. They had filled a square glass container with potting soil and grown grass in it (grass grows fast, you would have time before your party to do this). Then in the grass they inserted just a few gerbera daises (maybe 3)... the flowers were cut, not rooted. You could do this if you could find inexpensive glass containers (check the Goodwill or Salvation army) and use less expensive flowers. I had great luck finding clear glass containers at the GW for DD's most recent b.day party.

Anyhow, good luck...........................P

Buy flower printed mylar balloons filled with helium.
Have a corsage for Mom.
African violets are pretty - and cheap.
Google ideas for using seed packets as crafts or decoration
Matching paper products (plates, cups, napkins) with flower motif.

flower shaped sugar cookies can be favors or dessert. Or you could do cupcakes, the are so in now.

I make my sugar cookie dough and freeze it. You can bake cookies and freeze them ahead of time then thaw and decorate.

Is she flowers only or garden?

When in April - you might be able to get discounted leftover Easter plants, the small hydrangeas and such

Invites - beautiful flower note cards - print up the wording on nice paper, cut it out and glue it in. or www.vistaprint.com had some cheap invites.

Is she moving someplace she can garden? Buy a big basket and ask everyone to bring something for the basket.

Are you a SemiHomemade fan - Sandra Lee did a Rose party - once with favor and place setting ideas.

Goodluck - what a wonderful daughter you are!

I love this concept!

Thank you for the compliment. I have a wonderful Mom so it's is a pleasure to do this for her and she will be sorely missed.:sad1:

Oh, gardening could definitely be part of the theme. And she is anxious to start her garden at her new home. I did run up to the dollar store today to buy some tissue paper and pipe cleaners to make the Mexican flowers. I also got some gardening tools and planters. I was thinking I could use the planters as serving dishes and the tools as serving utensils.

So, keep the ideas coming! I love them all.

you can use this as a dessert... make chocolate pudding and place inside of clean new flower pot then crush up some some chocolate cookies or use the chocolate grahman cracker crust and place on top of the pudding to make it look like dirt add a few gummy worms and some plastic flower . i use a small garden shovel as the spoon to dish it out.. well good luck the party theme sounds great

I attended a party one time where the hostess made serving platters from clear glass plates with flowers pressed between two plates for her buffet. So for each platter you would need two clear plates that can be stack together. Then you put flowers in between them. I remember she used pansies (just the flower top) and it looked so cute. You could use any type of flower, herb or greenery that you like. I don't remember though what she served on the plates besides butter pats, since you want to be able to still see the flowers...
I hope this makes sense!

I love the dirt cake dessert idea. It always turns out so cute, and yummy, too. I saw some balloon flowers recently that were really cute and didn't look too hard. Wish I had a pic, but basically it was a yellow balloon surrounded by about six pink ballons, and the stem was one of the longer green balloons. They had a whole garden of them and it was so colorful and fun. I think I remember Family Fun magazine doing an article on a flower party once. You might check their website for ideas.
