We have stayed @ Ft. Wilderness many times before & have our reservation for June 5-11. I am wanting to get info for other nice campgrounds that people have stayed @ in Florida ( not near Disney). Yes I know it's a disney thread, but I am not part of any other camping threads and am looking for a different atmosphere other than disney for another trip. So any experiences shared or advice would be greatly apprciated even if it is a link for another forum.

Hi!

We love to stay at Fort Desoto - near St. Pete Beach! They have sites on the water that are very nice!

Check out RvUsa.org for some great camping threads! (Many of us are over there too, and there's lots of info on other campgrounds!) :goodvibes

We like River Ranch in Lake Wales. It's kind of a cowboy dude ranch theme. They have a rodeo every Sat. night, horseback riding, skeet shooting, airboat rides, swamp buggie rides, fishing, and lots more. We will be there for the holiday at the end of the month. :goodvibes

Of course nothing compares to Fort Wilderness - but we like Hanna Park in Jacksonville Beach. The beach is beautiful and the campground has lots of big trees. Very old Florida like. It also has sewer hook-ups (that is a plus for us!)

:)

This looks like a great place I looked @ their website. How big is it? Is it worth $85 a night? Is the rodeo an additional charge? Is there a website For the rodeo? Any additional info would be great. I

It is a pretty big place. Yes everything else is an additional charge. If I remember the rodeo was $12 per person I thing. We did the swamp buggie ride and I think it was $20 or $25 per person.:cool1:

We don't live in Florida, but are looking for a campground in northern Florida on the Gulf Coast or the Panhandle. Our choice campgrounds in Myrtle Beach are full the week we are looking at in June. Would love to hear of more beach campgrounds in Florida. We like St. Andrews State Park but there are not many around PC Beach and Destin or that area of Florida that are actually on the beach.

Looking for more ideas too!:thumbsup2

We love Crystal Isle in Crystal River, it is on a canal out to the river, they have boat rentals if you don't have your own. But the CG is very nice great people. We have our RV there for a month, and will probably be more still working on the details. We go there almost as much as the fort.

We love to camp at Hanna Park also. We spend Thanksgiving there every year.

RV TV just highlighted Navarre Beach Campground in Navarre, FL. It's right on the intercoastal about half way between Pensacola & Destin. It looked pretty nice. Haven't been there myself, but it did look nice w/ lots of activities for everyone in the family. Some site were water views & had cabin rentals, etc.

Where is this? how do I find out more info/
Thanks to all for the great info!

You can google Hanna Park. It's official name is Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park. It is run by the city of Jacksonville, so unlike our state run parks - it has sewer hook ups.

:)

Have you tried Henderson State Park in Destin? It is wright on the Gulf. It's a nice facility.
Also there was a post that mention Navarre Beach campground its a nice place too but not on the beach.

I think I have heard of another campground out in San Destin which I think is Topsail, I know I've heard good things about it but I will try and get you more info.

We stay at Riverside in Arcadia, FL.

We like it because they have great activities for the kids on the weekends and very clean restrooms and showers. Also have river activities like canoeing (I know I spelled that wrong) and fishing.

Have a great summer.

Hi,

Well I can finally say that I have broaden my camping experience. For years DH and our two BT's have only stayed at Disney, first in our travel trailer and now in our 5th wheel. But now, I can say I've been to another camp ground that wasn't here in my hometown and we loved it! I think Disney maybe in trouble with us especially if I can keep conviencing myself to go further than a 2 hr drive. Plus, it was sooooo much less expensive than paying the Disney rates!

We went to Holiday Cove RV Resort in Bradenton Beach, Fl. I am a researcher and I must say Disney has spoiled me so I wanted to find somewhere to go for my birthday weekend that had ammenities and the surrounding area had entertainment and good food. Luckily, one of the girls I work with stays in Anna Maria at a cottage every year, so I had a in on the inside information on the island so I felt comfortable staying there. The RV park is kinda small and the sites are really pretty tight (and people complain about Disney's 1900 Loop), these are smaller! Some sites had crushed shell with a cement patio, but most were just completely shell or grass. Despite that the resort was well maintained and was on a huge canal with over hanging trees that lead to the ocean. Fish jumped like crazy in there the whole time we were there, but DH's frozen shrimp that he picked up at the bait store around the corner didn't catch him anything. Oh well, it was realxing sitting out on the dock with my two kids reading a book and watching him try to catch a fish. I swear it felt like it was at least 10 degrees cooler over there on the water than it did here at home near Tampa. Making reservations at the resort was a little different than Disney we had emailed them and then called to make a reservation, but we never got anything in the mail or a confirmation. So, 2 weeks before our trip I emailed them and asked for one. Course' at check-in I realized why it wasn't a big deal. They actually knew who we were and didn't anything from us other than a signature. Very friendly people and the others that seem to be staying there all seem to know each other and were staying for months at a time. We were only there two nights and had met and spoke with our neighsbors and was greeted all the time while walking our kids by the other campers. The resort has several new boat docks that back up to the canal sites so feel free to bring your boats and they even have a row boat that you can use if you don't have your own. DH and I brought our bikes and rode all the way upto Holmes Beach (2 hr ride there and back). Plenty of shopping, beautiful beaches and free maps of places to see and eat at were available everywhere. We found ourselves looking at one everytime we went out to ride. While back at the campground we enjoyed free internet service and I had no challenges connecting on my laptop and more cable channels than Disney offered for free as well. We did miss having a BBQ at the site, but all the great food in the area made up for it. I highly reccomend the Star Fish Grill. We ate there every night after our bike ride for dinner. I forwarn you though it's really rustic. Matter of fact, it's a working seafood dock so you know it's fresh, but theirs no servers, no table clothes etc. It's picnic tables and a small bar that seats like 6 people on a covered dock. Fido is welcome, but they would need to be very well behavied as you'll be sharing a picnic table with strangers that may not like pets. We didn't take our kids cause' even though it's only three streets down from the camp ground it's too far for our kids to walk and depending upon when you go it can be upto an hour wait for food. The locals all eat there, so you know it's good and it came highly reccomended by my co-worker. We got there at a quarter to eight every night right before it was suppose to close and only waited for as long as it took to down one beer before we got our food to take back to the camper. DH had claim strips and I had the grilled grouper sandwich and we both got hush puppies which were so good they were like candy! UMMM!!!!

We'll defintly be going back as we still have lots more places to ride too and places to eat at and I still want to get to Anna Maria even if it means ditching the bikes and taking the free trolley.

RV TV? What cable company is that on? I have Verizon FIOS and I don't recall seeing that, but I'd love to watch it sometime.

Hey that's real darn close for me as I am in Pasco county and I trying to broaden my horizens other than just all the Disney camping I have done. :)So, I'd love to hear more about your campground of choice in Crystal Springs. By any chance is it a bit cooler there since it's closer to the ocean and isn't Crystal River like spring tempature water? I am all about getting a break from the 90 degree summer heat around here. :) DH and I like to ride our bikes, so are their places to ride too? Anything other than swimming, boating or fishing to do there or nearby? Like shopping and site seeing? Thanks inadvance for your info!

Right there with ya Deb.! LOL! I can't even tell ya how many times I've been to Disney camping in 1st a 26ft travel trailer and now in our 5th wheel. But, low and behold for the first time last weekend I did in deed see ANOTHER campground. LOL! Homing device has now fallen off....LOL!

We have gone to other campgrounds,,,, but not much!

Hillsborough State Park (2 times)

Ft. Desoto (once - but LOVED it)

Royal Coachman (Venice)

Fish Eatin' Creek (clutzy crappy - but enough beer fixed that!)

River Ranch - Lots of fun on the weekend

Boating up the Manatee River, picking an island & pitching a tent.

In the backyard. (Ya gotta try it out, dontcha?)

Dania/Hallendale, Fl

Yogi Bear (the old one outside of WDW)

St. Augustine on the beach.

Myakka River State Park

Oscar Schearer State Park

There used to be a campground on the beach on Siesta Key that we camped at. Alas.... it's now condos.

I think that's it. But mostly... FtW!!!
