Florida homeowner tax bill

I think the only fair way to tax a home if it is based on original purchase price plus any major improvements, completely ignoring market price. This would mean that the person who has been in their house for decades and now has no kids in school would pay the least, while the newcomers, probably younger with school age kids, would pay the most.
What about the empty nesters who decide to downsize or move to a different location. They would be hit very hard.

I looked into this a bit more. While Orange County would probably be ok because they have 30K commercial properties & 3K industrial properties, my residential community would lose 56% of our tax revenue. 🤣 so the plan is to impose a fire department fee. A law enforcement fee is illegal. In my humble opinion this is nothing more than a shell game to make one single individual look like a hero. I’ll pass … put me down as a “no”. 🤣
That confirms what I was starting to think. Why impose a one size fits all on every local government as to whether a particular type of tax is out of bounds? Why not give counties flexibility as to which taxes are the best for their particular county? As you suggest, this could work well for some counties but not others.

But, we worked county by county to help local leaders come up with the best tax mix for their individual circumstances doesn’t make headlines like we eliminated property taxes for all Florida residents.

Like so much of tax policy across the political spectrum, it’s driven more by what’s going to look good in a fundraising letter or an election ad.

Omg … I just realized that a “fire fee” probably won’t be considered a “tax” and therefore won’t be covered under the 3% homestead tax cap that we currently enjoy. So this change could potentially impact me MORE than just leaving things status quo. Now I’m mad too …off to get my pitch fork and torches from storage. 😆

I am actually in that group! We had to buy the house that fit our budget including taxes.
Maybe some senior exemptions could help, but we really need to know how they are going to make up for the lost revenue.

Wouldn’t they have to double the sales tax to compensate for the loss in revenue?
When this idea first came up last year, I did some back of the napkin calculations and I came up with a little less than the doubling of sales tax, from 7%, to make up for lost property tax revenue. But I had assumed that all properties would qualify and all property tax would be eliminated, neither of those are now true so it would be less, maybe closer to 10%. But these were just wild guesses on a napkin so who knows...

I did not know that Taxifornia did that, good for them!

I still think it's fair - the person in that low purchase price house bought the house they could afford at that time, including taxes, and I'm sure their income did not keep up with the gigantic property value increases. And the new family bought the house they could afford (including property taxes).
I agree (basically because it benefits me 🤣🤣)

The challenge with governments and tourism attractions is to make sure they are not placing an undue burden on tourists, because they can and will go someplace else - this is a hard lesson that Las Vegas is learning as we speak for example.
It brings me great joy to see this happening to vegas after they were charging like $35 for one drink the last time I went there at the tail end of covid 🤣🤣

I dislike having to pay taxes for school kids i will admit 🤣🤣 if I had kids im pretty sure id go the homeschooling route as well and be just as sad. I am happy to contribute to almost everything else 😀

Alright, I can’t help myself, but now I’m just picturing Scrooge McDuck. lol. You can’t hate on school kids learning; that’s just off limits!🤣

Proud public school parent so maybe I’m biased, but I also want the majority of the next generation of people we all have to deal with to have educations as well. lol.

Im probably not a scrooge in the way you think lol im just so opposed to some of the stuff they teach, and by that im talking unnecessary stuff like math that drove me insane and I never use! Education is important and our teachers being severely underpaid and having to come out of pocket makes me mad too!

Let's focus on each child's talent and bring that out and not do a one size fits all and then I can get behind that, but some of it is such a waste imo and that bugs me. I wish I can choose what I put my money on, I would like more to the arts and creativity 🤣

🤣🤣🤣 but how do you spot a good ROFR deal without math?!

I do agree though in some ways. I absolutely hate that we teach no other languages in our local schools until high school. Shameful!
Im talking the crazy math like the one that prevented me from getting into the same high school as my friends and my dream college because I had an A in everything except a big ol ugly F in math because its not my thing 🤣🤣 So many summer schools trying to pass that thing and after school programs, I think im traumatized 🤣🤣

Yes! Teaching kids languages, culture, travel, how to actually invest and build wealth, I would love to contribute to that!!

Didnt they get rid of cursive writing and teaching kids how to sign their signature too?? That seems important enough to me 🤣 I need to go over there and tell them whats up 🤣🤣
Yes. Most people under 20 don’t seem to know how to sign their names (I’m a pharmacist and I get to see when people sign their names at pickup). Maybe even under 25.

My 11 year old technically can sign her name as she’s had a few cursive classes, but she struggles hard and the results are pretty poor. I’ve told her she has to practice before signing her passport.
