I am looking to take my daughter up to visit the campuses in northern Florida..UF...FSU..UCF..FIU..and whatever else may be looming up there..Does anyone know of any good inexpensive hotels central to a lot of these colleges..This is soo all new to me..Any and all help is greatly appreciated:goodvibes

Hi ! My dd just got accepted to FSU in April and starts in the fall. We toured the campus in March. How inexpensive are you talking ? We stayed at the Comfort Suites (5 min from campus). VERY clean hotel and paid about $85/night. I would have stayed here again but the Wingate Inn beat their price for $83/night for this month's orientation. Comfort Suites wanted $109/night for June's dates.

But I used this site first (like it because it shows the distance to the FSU campus to give you an idea) :

Secondly, go to trip advisor.com and look for reviews. This is how I narrowed down my choices by ratings.

I do see a Howard Johnson Express about 9 miles from campus with rates anywhere from $50-$70 on average a night.

Hope this helps. Good luck and happy college touring !

Do you mean one hotel central to all of the schools? If so, thats a bit of a challenge. Florida is a huge state, and to go from UCF to FSU is gonna be ... around 6 hours of a drive.

The most central you are gonna get is like... Gainesville. It would put you minutes from UF, two hours from UCF, and four hours from FSU.

And FIU is in miami, so if you are looking at north florida, forget about that one. Gainesville to miami is... I dunno, 6 hours south?

Ditto, Florida is huge. I graduated from FSU, even from there to Orlando is a pretty long drive if you are trying to go there and back in one day.
Where do you live? Why would anyone pay out of state fees to go to college? Just wondering, out of state fees are double and if you have decent colleges in your state:confused3

Do you live in Florida? My bad if you do, I just thought by the question that you don't.

Two big reasons :
1) daughter is a marine bio major. Pretty difficult to do lab and fieldwork in a land-locked state (PA).

2) very inclement weather here in PA. Daughter as well as the whole family are sick and tired of snow, ice and cold for 9+ months out of the year. I had the heat on less than 5 days ago. We had our first snow fall of 3 inches in Oct this past winter. And last snow in early April. It gets old. She went to FL Tech for her freshman year and LOVED being in the warm, sunny climate. Perfect for a marine bio/ecology major. She did a good amount of fieldwork in the St John's River her freshman year. Only reason she is transferring is because the school was too small and way too boring for someone who can't go home on weekends. She said the campus was a ghost town from Friday 4 pm through late night Sunday. She would eat in the dining hall alone. She wanted much more of a college/campus life/atmosphere. She came from a large high school and is used to many more people around.

PS : also, my daughter has an excellent scholarship that really brings down the out-of-state cost for us. Not as much as a PA state school....but decent enough that we feel it's in her best interest to go to school in FL.

There is also JU and UNF in Jacksonville. I think one or both are private universities - I know JU is. Don't know much about them other than the location. I grew up in Gainesville but went to FSU. I loved FSU - but that was in the late 80's. If your daughter is going into a science type field, then I would say UF. Music, education and humanities, I would say FSU. But that is my opinion.

Good luck,
Kristi

I lived in PA and when I thought about majoring in MB I looked a lot into Eckerd College (west coast of Florida). It looks like a great school for the major. They have all sorts of equipment and stuff for different classes to go out into the ocean. It is expensive though. They actually have information sessions in PA though; I think the one I went to was in Valley Forge.

I would recommend my school in Florida, but it doesn't have an MB major I don't think! :)

I know what you mean about suitcase colleges. I have friends who go to them and say they wouldn't be able to stand it if they couldn't go home on the weekends!

Thanks for the info. FL Tech in Melbourne actually had their own boat and all. So field-work wise, it was ideal. My daughter just felt lonely and bored there on the weekends. One day she went to a common outside campus location on Saturday and stood in front of the university webcam. No joke...it was 4 pm'ish and not a soul anywhere around her. She ate one too many meals by herself. Got so bad, she didn't leave her dorm on the weekends....just ate in her room. Def a suitcase college.

FSU has a great facility for MB majors about 40 min off campus. They shuttle the students there. We toured it and met the director. They also have their own boat and research facility there.

Thanks again. My daughter is hoping for more of an involved campus life at FSU.
