We have had lots of thunderstorms and rain over the past few days in Tennessee. Most areas have had between 6-9 inches and more is on the way today. Many roads are flooded and several school systems have closed for the day.

Check out this picture of the Little Pigeon River in front of Ripley's Aquarium in Gatlinburg yesterday. It was over the road at times there yesterday and several people had to be rescued from the aquarium.

I hope those of you who are in the areas hit by the tornadoes are not having this kind of rain!

If you want to link a picture, right click on it on the web page over the picture, choose properties, then copy the spot that says address or URL. Once you have that, click on the IMG button just above the text entry here, and paste in that URL. Looks like this:

Thanks, Jeff. :D Now that I know what to do, here are a couple more pictures.

This is another picture of River Rd. in front of Ripley's Aquarium in Gatlinburg. The Little Pigeon crested at 10 feet.

This is a community center in Tellico Plains, TN. That's not pavement in the parking lot!

I think the worst flooding is in the Chattanooga area. They are down river and everything accumulates there.

Hope everyone is staying safe & dry.

Record Flooding

From the National Weather Service Office in Morristown, Tennessee: Near record flooding forecast for the South Chickamauga Creek in Chattanooga... This includes the following rivers: South Chickamauga Creek and Sequatchie River.
For the South Chickamauga Creek, moderate flooding is occuring with near record flooding forecast. For the Sequatchie River, including near Whitwell, minor flooding is occuring and is expected to continue.

For the South Chickamauga, moderate flooding is occuring, with a stage of 24.6 feet measured at 8 am Wednesday. Near record flooding is forecast, with a maximum stage of 28.5 feet between 1 and 3 am Thursday, which is 10.5 feet above flood stage. The record flood occurred on February 17, 1990 and reached 28.72 feet. Other recent near record levels occured in 1973 and 1994.

For the Sequatchie River near near Whitwell, minor flooding is occuring, with a stage of 17.1 feet measured at 8 am Wednesday. The river had crested and was levelling off. A slow fall at the gauge site near Whitwell may occur today as breaks in the rain move over the area. The river will stay above flood stage through Thursday. Areas downstream of the gauge in Marion County will remain high as the flood crest wave moves downstream.

Most deaths in floods occur in cars. If a road is officially closed or if water covers the road, turn around, don't drown. For more details, stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or commercial television or radio that carry weather information.

I live in NW Georgia (about 25-30 miles or so from Chattanooga) and most of our schools were called off today because of the flooding. Lots of people are without power. We had a mini tornado touch down not too far from here yesterday (it's not confirmed yet). I'm so tired of rain.
