Flip flops in dining room?

DD20 wears flip flops all the time...nicer ones to the dining rooms, not something she wore to the beach. I will mention, however, that I wear closed toed shoes and bring a sweater or jacket because I often found the dining rooms and theater to be cold!

Okay, I've read enough attire threads that I felt the need to add my two cents to the whole debate. ;) Personally, I think it's great that people try to be in line with the recommended attire for their cruise. Recommended attire, which is what all the main dining rooms subscribe to, is what the majority of people will be wearing, so if you dress similarly you will blend. I know some people throw down about not wanting to change out of their shorts, but dinner on a cruise ship is an event, not just a meal, and you should try to be respectful to the requests of the event host, in this case DCL. Would you wear shorts to a black tie wedding? Of course not! I view dinner on a cruise ship the same way. That said, I don't think it's necessary to stress out about what to wear - as long as you have good intentions when planning your wardrobe, I can't imagine anyone would fault you. I know there are lots differing points of view on this, but that my story and I'm sticking to it! :thumbsup2

I agree with all of this. Plus, for us personally, we got a little more casual with each cruise (other than formal night).
Same thing for us...in the main dining rooms, our attire has definitely gotten more casual. I remember the days on DCL where jeans were relatively rare in the dining rooms. Now they're the norm.

We still dress up quite a bit for Palo, but that is for two reasons: 1) we're local, so we don't have to worry about luggage charges; and 2) both DH and I work at home so we're casually dressed all the time. Palo gives us a chance to break out the dresses and suits.

Well gosh. . .I am getting that pedicure the day before we leave just so I can show off my piggy toes not cover 'em up!

Not wearign my $2.5 flip flops from Old navy or my wide web flippies but my beaded sandles? you betcha! and getting my teenage daughter into anything besides her flipflop/sandles? Not happening.

Enjoy your cruise! I don't think the fashion police signed up to go on my boat yet?!

dressy flip flops are fine.

I had everyone stressed out over wardrobe and forced everyone to dress up for our May 14th, 3 night Wonder...and I cannot even describe the dirty looks I got from my travel mates when they saw shorts and t-shirts in the dining rooms EVERY night of the cruise....one man actually wore a hat all through dinner on the first night. We even saw polo shirts/un-tucked dress shirts and a french terry capri and hooded sweat shirt ensemble at Palo(no dirty looks for that one...my travel mates were actually a bit shocked) but no matter how dressed down anyone was...CMs never blinked an eye and no one looked uncomfortable dressed down. On our dressy night I had to abandon my pumps for flip flops because my feet swelled up on Castaway Cay and I had cuts on my feet that got progressily 'angrier' with all of the walking on Nassau or the ever moving sand on the beach.

Note: I did see floor length gowns on dressy night...but they were the exception not the norm.

We booked the 4 night while on the cruise for December and I am just going to shop for dressy capri type ensembles and plan to wear sandals/dressy flip flops(they are considered business casual for some pretty large corporations in Florida), I will wear something dressier (slacks and dressy blouse or pantsuit)for Palo.

Very well said!!

We just returned from the May 9th Eastern cruise. This was our first cruise ever and I stressed a lot about our dinner attire. We had Main seating and I can tell you there is no need to stress.

Use common sense. Now I personally would not wear, or let my kids wear, cut-off shorts or old tattered t-shirts to dinner but it really wouldn't effect my dinner experience if someone else did.

Some people wear dockers, skirts, capris etc. Flip flops were everywhere as well as gym shoes, fancy sandals and athletic sandals and crocs. BUT, there were many kids in shorts, nice shorts and even a lot in athletic type shorts. There were also many adults in shorts as well. I do have to say that the adults in shorts that I did see were all nice Docker or Eddie Bauer type shorts with polo type shorts.

As for formal/semi formal, most people dress up a little more but I wouldn't stress about this either. I think I noticed 2 maybe 3 men in tuxes the whole night. There were quite a few women in fancy evening dresses but for the most part many women had just typical dresses on or even dressier capri's with "fancy" tops. Just so you know, if you don't want to dress up, don't there were plenty of people that didn't dress up either.

Our next cruise I will let my kids, and hubby, wear nice shorts and polo shirts. To be honest you really don't see what people are wearing below the waist, you are sitting most of the time anyhow! The other bit of info is that from the servers we spoke to, pretty much anything goes. They aren't going to "kick you out" of the dining room and several of them I spoke with said they wouldn't be surprised or even expected the "dress code" to be gone by the time the new ships come out.

Hope that helps.

The only requirement is that you wear shoes of some sort...flip flops meet that requirement. I don't pack dress shoes at all--black sandals can substitute for dress shoes for women; black tennies can do it for guys--especially the younger ones!

Your capris will be fine. Seriously, I think people stress too much about what is OK for what nights. I'm convinced that the people who worry about it are the ones who would be making good choices anyhow.

What's not in the dress code that you should consider--cover your body--no one wants to see "private parts" popping out in the dining room. If my teen would find a 50 year old's outfit to be too revealing, it probably is. This is DIsney, not Carnival. I'm not aiming this at your personally....I've just seen some UNREAL outfits in the dining rooms that DD has commented upon.

Really? Wardrobe Malfunctions?

I am truly shocked at the thought that other ADULTS would behave in this way!:scared1: Are there REALLY people on a Disney Cruise that would give people 'mean looks' and say something to you based on what you are wearing!! - That is what I call RUDE - NOT someone choosing to wear comfortable footwear to dinner!!!:sad2:

I'll be honest... my feeling is they are inappropriate at a table service restaurant that's above a Chili's/Friday's type caliber. It's like wearing a hat at the dinner table... It's just not right to me.

That being said, do I care enough about it to make an issue of it? No... its not that big of a deal... honestly, someone ordering a well done steak bothers me much more... something I give my Dad and BIL grief about...

Some people might give looks, but me personally, even if I don't like it, its too much effort on something that really isn't important. I just wouldn't have my daughter do it, and everyone else can do what they want.... although large people (and thin people) in the dining rooms wearing revealing tanktops and spandex are something that SHOULD be addressed... Shoes hurts no one... revealing clothing ruins most people's appetites.

Honestly if anyone had the GALL to say something to anyone because of what type of shoes they were wearing- I'd have to tell them to get over themselves! LOL

I agree... ask them why they aren't enjoying their time on the cruise instead of worrying about what people wear on their feet!

With that said- my most comfortable shoes are flipflops. I wore my crocs ones (solid black) most nights with slacks type material dressy capris/blouse- and even one formal night (out of a few -15nt cruise) I wore beaded flipflops. No one batted an eye- as it should be. :)

Too darn funny! I live in my flip flops. I have $2 flip flops and I have $30 flip flops. If I choose to wear the $30 flip flops to dinner on a cruise I paid for that is my business. My $30 flip flops look better than everyone elses PayLess $9.00 dress shoes. How silly are these comments!!

Well, I think nice flip flops with a cute outfit look great. I will be wearing nice sandals or my ballet flats ($1 on clearance at Wally World - Don't tell!) with my dresses at dinner. I am not a heel wearer and would feel really uncomfortable wearing them on the ship, especially outside on the decks where it can be slippery or on the first/last nights when the ship can really get rocking. Shoes to me should be comfortable more than anything, although if you're going to show your tootsies, make 'em pretty! I'm going to get a pedicure before our cruise just to be sure.

We've worn jeans with pirate themed shirts (from ChoiceShirts.com) on Pirate Night on all our shorter previous cruises, but with 5 of us on a 7 nighter now, I really want to limit luggage, so we will also wear jeans with dressy tops/polos on the first/last nights, since those are the most casual w/people either rushing to unpack or pack. The other nights, Dockers for the boys/DH and sundresses for DD and I. The formal night will just be shirts/tie/dress slacks and fancier type dresses. As long as we are all neat and clean (isn't that a line from the Mickey Mouse Club?) and dressed tastefully, I'm sure we'll be fine.

Just one request - Please, men, DON'T wear sleeveless tank shirts in the dining rooms. I really don't want to have to avoid looking at your armpit hair (trust me, past experience - NOT fun!) during my meal. It's a simple request! I know with a family of 5, we will most likely be seated with another family. Although we may never see the people we cruise with again, I certainly wouldn't want to be "THAT" family. And anyone who is thinking about what they wear in the dining rooms probably wouldn't be in that category, anyway!

so what about men/boys?

It's just a 3-night cruise, so not that formal....

will my husband and boys be appropriately dressed if they wear khaki shorts/polos or khaki shorts/short-sleeved tropic shirts to dinner?

And what about footwear for men? Are brown leather sandals okay for them?

My husband wears dress clothes M-F to work and Sundays to church. I think he's hoping to leave them at home this trip! pirate:

Tell him to leave it at home. On our 3 night, most people wore shorts and regular shirts (there was even lots of t-shirts). The optional dress-up night really didn't have anyone in the dining room wearing anything dressy (early dining). Don't worry about what other people think and enjoy your cruise.

I have a pair of Swarovski crystal flip flops that are brown. I didn't feel like packing for this last cruise, and my husband made fun of me as I tried on every casual brown dress and brown pants that I had to make sure they matched with the flip flops. One pair of "dress up" shoes. But c'mon, they're Swarovski! :)

P.S. Hubby wore long khakis and flip flops as well. No crystals for him. ;)

U Wear what ever you feel like! this is your cruise!, I never question what I should wear, I wear what I Feel like and what makes me happy as well as comfortable, I wear it for myself and thats what everyone should do, One could never please everyone, but one can please themselves! Boy I feel like an ancient writer wow boy am I really growing up:rotfl:
but back to my kiddie days who gives a Mickey ear what these folks think you will never see them again lol:woohoo:

Okay, I didn't read the whole thread and I apologize if someone mentioned this, but I have to say SWITCH FLOPS!!!!

They are the answer to my packing prayers. I bought the wedge ones that have a cork like look to them and about 5 different straps. The straps velcro on and off so you can match any outfit. They have very casual ones, but the wedge heel that I bought looks very nice with dressier clothes. No they are not dress shoes, but I didn't wear a formal dress anyway. I wore them just about every night in April, changing the straps frequently, and I was quite comfortable with my choice.

For the entire week I backed three pairs of shoes - casual switch flop flip-flops, the dressy ones I talked about above and a Pair of black slip on heels which I honestly didn't need, but are so comfortable I wanted to take them just in case. I wore my Keen sandles to and from and on excursions. It was wonderful compared to previous cruises where I either had to pack a half dozen shoes or settle for shoes that didn't match.

I bought them locally, but you can get them on line. I spent about $40 for the wedge and about $10 for each different strap - a little pricey for flip flops, but well worth the investment in my eyes
