Flights Booked, Now Hotel Help Needed !!

We are taking our first trip to California in September this year and will be doing a road trip from LA-Vegas-National Parks-San Francisco-Coast Road-LA-Home! Phew!!

We booked our flights a couple of days ago, flying with Virgin (fingers crossed for comfy seats )

Now we have started looking at hotels for each place and for us never having been to any of these places before, its a bit like searching for your lost sunglasses in a Disney park!!

Can anyone give any recommendations for hotels close to Disneyland - but not the Disney hotels as they seem way overpriced on my searching-

Would like somewhere ideally with a shuttle or not too far to drive. will only be spending a couple of nights there,so dont want to travel too far to get to parks.

Then we need to work on LA hotels and San Francicso

How much are you willing to spend?

There are a number of hotels in Anaheim and it comes down to a personal preference and choice. Some across the road from Disney. A lot of people like to stay at the Howard Johnson (HoJo).

I have stayed at the Candy Cane, which runs its own shuttle to Disney and is a 7 - 10 minute walk; and the Residence Inn Maingate, which has a great breakfast and is a 10 - 15 minute walk to Disney. RI is also serviced by the ART buses.

Both were great for different reasons.

Budget is somewhere between $100-150 per night hotel wise looking for somewhere clean, rooms not too small and within a 10 minute drive as far as DL goes.

Other places about same budget just not sure on best areas o city

I think there are a lot of hotels in Anaheim in that price range. Definitely Candy Cane, HoJo and Residence Inn Maingate are all in that price range if it is just two of you. All 3 are walkable, in my opinion, with RI being the furthest walk of about 10 - 15 minutes.


Finding a hotel in San Francisco downtown area in that price range is a little bit more problematic. My DH goes to Silicon Valley for work purposes, so we tend to stay out and use the CalTrain in.

I have stayed at the Hyatt Regency in SF, at the Embarcadero. Most people like to stay in Fisherman's Wharf or closer to Union Square.

I have also stayed at the California Hotel many many years ago.

Your other option is to look at the motels along Lombard Street...a little bit out of the main downtown area; and some of them are hit and miss in terms of reviews..but they can be in your price range. I've stayed at the Marina Inn in that part of town and caught the Muni bus into Union Square; or walked to Fisherman's Wharf. For what we paid at the Marina Inn, it was fine...but it wasn't the Ritz.


Not that I'm self promoting much , but there is a link to my TR for Jan 2011 in my siggie below where we started in Anaheim and ended up in Silicon Valley, driving up the coast road. It may provide you with an example of potential places to look at.
