Im a little confused how your upgrade system works for internal flights. In the Uk you only get upgraded if they have over booked the flight, this is very rare or you pay for it. But on some trip reports ive noticed that a few people have been upgraded just because there was room and they checked in first. Is this how it works? Do you have to ask for it? Is it some arilines and not others? Do US Airways do iy? and do you have to be a member of thier points club?

I know i have lots of q's, but im just trying to get my head round this.

Thanks

Emma

In my experience, most complimentary flight upgrades are perks for members of the airline's elite level frequent flier's club. Complimentary upgrades for other reasons are virtually non-existent.

CarolMN is correct. For most carriers with a home-base in the US, upgrades are either purchased or acquired via miles/points from the carrier's frequent flyer program. The number of miles required may vary. In some cases, passengers may purchase an upgrade. Some airlines sell upgrade coupons -- like American used to do -- you pay $XX and buy coupons, each of which may be good for 500 or 1000 miles of travel.

Complimentary upgrades for other reasons are rare these days. Several years ago when my DW and I got bumped, Delta moved us to 1st class on the next flight AND gave us both a free round-trip ticket anywhere in the continental U.S.!

Last trip we got bumped -- we were lucky to be put on the next available flight. No upgrade, no free ticket, no apology -- just a look that said "better luck next time." Oh well!
