Does everyone wear flight socks? My DH and I were planning on wearing them. BUT.......I was at my GP for an unrelated matter today and happened to mention about wearing them to him.........he said that there's just been a new report out and that wearing flight socks and/or taking aspirin (which I couldn't take anyway because I am allergic to it) makes no difference. He said if you don't wear the socks properly they can act like a tourniquet and could actually cause problems.

He advised me just to walk around a lot, drink lots of water and no alcohol and to save my money!!! He thinks it's all a ploy to make us buy the socks.

I don't know what to do now. He is a very good GP and I do trust his judgment normally. What does anyone else think? Any medical experts on the boards?

I thought about buying some of those when we went last year and then I saw the price of them!!! I decided then that walking around and doing a few excercises would be more beneficial!

Plus DH said he would disown me!!!

Not an expert, but I'd have to agree about the possible risks from flight socks.

When people have to wear antiembolitic stockings after surgery, they are measured and given the right size. Too big and they are useless (and ridiculous!), and too small they may restrict blood supply to your toes. Keeping out wrinkles is extremely important as they can obstruct blood flow and actually cause the clots you are trying to prevent.

I drink plenty of water, take 75mg aspirin (altho I know you can't take it, I will continue to do so unless it is actually proved dangerous!), avoid alcohol, and fidget about a lot and annoy everyone.

My doctor also said along those lines when i mentioned them to him, last year.

I take Aspirin (I know you cant though),Plenty Water, I make sure I walk at least to the toilet every hour (Having a 4yr old helps too), and just stretch your legs, and have a lil fidget if you want helps! DP gets annoyed with my, I'm sure a worrier so he goes nuts when im everywhere on the flight but your health is important!

When we went in August I bought a special cushion from Avon.

It's inflatable with 2 chambers. You half inflate it , put your feet on it &" push" the air from 1 side to the other. Does that make sense????

It wasn't expensive apprx £4or 5 and it also kept my kids amused as they thought it hilarious watching mum use it.

I also took my own large bottle of water with me.
