Flight changes - Help!!!

Ok so I'm in need of changing my departure date for a flight but out return date will stay the same.
I'm booked on united airline.
I need to know if there is a better, cheaper way to do this. Help!!
I called united and they said its $200 per ticket to make the change, period. Then it's however much the price difference would be in addition to the fee.
This means that I would be paying more than double what I first paid for this ticket. Unfortunately I can't avoid the date change.
Please tell me that there is a better way!!!

If you can buy a new round-trip ticket for less than the change fee plus the fare increase, do that. Otherwise, you'll have to bite the bullet and pay to make the change. You can't just buy a new one-way outbound flight, as the whole ticket will be cancelled if you are a no-show on your original outbound flight.

Yep. This is one of the sucky things about flying these days. It frequently costs more to change a flight then to buy a whole new ticket. I really do think you're stuck.

The only better way is to fly on Southwest. They don't charge any change fees. You'd only pay more if the new flight was priced higher. And if the new departure flight turned out to be cheaper than the original flight, you'd get a credit for the difference!

we had a death in the family many years ago and had to cancel our vaca to WDW and one of the folks going was the person who passed away. it took us 3 months and many many phone calls and letters to get our credits for new flights and a refund for our lost relative.....they are not user friendly when it comes to doing favors.
