Flies - they are driving me crazy!!!

We like to eat dinner outside in the summer, but this year there are swarms of flies every time we go to sit down to eat. Is there something we can put out to distract them from the food on the table? These are about the size of a housefly, but look a little greenish, not totally black like a regular housefly.

I haven't tried it but I've heard/read that this works. Take ziploc baggies and fill about halfway with water and add a couple of pennies. Put these around the table or if you are under some kind of shelter, staple/hang them around.

Cloves, oranges and basil are supposed to repel flies - maybe make a pomander (orange studded with cloves) they smell yummy and place those around your table or put pots of basil close by. I've seen people hang ziploc baggies full of water to repel the flies but I don't think that really works. Good luck!

My mother in law heard about that, we tried it on 4th of July. She said she witnessed it somewhere else working, which is why she tried it. It did not work at our house for some reason.
