Flies and bees at pools?

We recently returned from a trip and now I'm thinking about another one. We love AKJ, but were totally annoyed by the flies! Even just laying on the pool chairs nowhere near the pool bar we were swamped, and by the pool bar was terrible. All of the tables were covered, and they landed on our arms/drinks even as we were being handed them...Gross.
We also were terribly bothered by bees at Kidani pool. They were flying all around us and crawling all over our mugs and sneaking in the lids...poor kids were scared and we had to keep washing them off before we could reuse.
On a past trip, we were swamped by bees at CSR pool. Moved around the pool to several areas hoping it would help- but no.
What's up with this? Are there any resorts that don't have these problems?

We had bees at the poly and DD was actually stung by one. It was on her mug and she didn't see it. She grabbed the mug and we were leaving. Once we hit the gate she screamed and threw her mug on the ground. Lifeguards surrounded her quickly and got the first aid kit out.

I think the only way to get rid of the bees or flies is to not have ANY food or drinks in the area which isn't reasonable. It sucks but it's a part of nice weather and a pool.

I don't remember them at our BC portion of the trip.

Now that you mention it- we stayed a couple of nights at BC and I think we were fine there. AKJ is our home resort, though :(

And while we love BC, the lack of storage after the reno means we won't be back. 4 people living out of suitcases made for a messy room and it was crowded having our suitcases out all of the time.

I didn't notice any at CSR when we were there a couple weeks ago. Not a single flying insect at all. We go to a local amusement park rather frequently and they are swarmed with bees and flies so I expected to see some of that at WDW but only caught glimpse of one the whole week and none at Universal.

After a literal swarm of bees tookup residence in my yard (while we were away at Disney this past September, no less) I will never ever complain about the couple of nuisance bees near trash cans and drink dispenders again lol!

Seriously though, we didn't notice any bees or bugs or anything during our stay at boardwalk in May, the Polynesian in September, or bay Lake last Christmas.

Wow- I wonder if there are times when it worsens? We were there in August, and our previous trip where at CSR we were dealing with constant bees was an April trip. I have only a slight bee allergy but couldn't imagine someone with a serious one being there- they were everywhere! I think the flies are just gross, but bees could be a serious issue.

A couple years ago I was staying at the Polynesian, I was in the main pool and got stung by what I'm guess was some type of bee, I had my hand on the ledge of the pool but I wasn't looking in that direction and I felt pain in the top of my hand so when I looked my hand was turning red and swelling and you could see a sting mark. I never noticed bees to be terrible around the pool, but I did get stung while in the water so now when I'm at any pools I'm always watching out for bees, thank goodness I've never seen swarms of them around though!

This year I was at the GF and I didn't see bees as a big issue there either, but lovebugs were terrible (I know that's seasonal) and it was worst around the pool where they were constantly landing on our chairs, cups, bags, etc. It was really annoying.

Yeah- the bees were crawling all over our mugs. Constantly. We tried covering them with towels but they were crawling under them!

Yes, the ones up north where it's cold ;)

Seriously though, it's FL. There are flies and bees and without cold weather to kill them off, they are always there. They spray but only so much you can do. Gotta love nature

We've stayed at every resort on property but for the dedicated Villa's and 2 of the All Stars. Saw a bee at every one of them at one point or another. Bees don't know property lines so they go everywhere. If someone went and didn't see any it was pure dang luck

And Disney is not going to spray to kill bees. They might come up with a means to move them away, but as long as you have self serve mug refill spots, you are going to have flies and bees.

When the horrifying swarm showed up in our yard we knew we couldn't kill them. Luckily I have a friend who is a beekeeper and he came and got them. Bees are good.

They were at the pool- not near the refill stations, and not at every resort.

Only time I've seen a bee at Disney was at the refill station at a pool. I was thinking about having a naughty soda (ds and DH canNOT have conventional American soda and therefore I don't out of kindness to them, but I was all alone with my used-for-coffee mug) then I saw the bees crawling on and in the soda dispensers and re-thought it.

just got home from BCV's and no issue at SAB at all. Years ago, the problem there were the birds!! But they somehow solved that problem. Not only the occasional one coming for your food.

I never noticed bees or anything else at the grand Floridian, boardwalk, or contemporary
However, the beach club had them, but only near the trash cans or so it seemed.
I know bees are awesome and all that junk, but bee stings seriously hurt and cause a weeks worth of furious itching and swelling for me so I am very observant!

In the past year I swam at BW and BC in Dec, POR and POFQ in June, GF and BC in August, and I didn't notice any bees or flies, so I think they must not have been too bad during the times I was there. I guess it just depends on when and where they hatch out and make nests.

Just back from POFQ no issues with bees this year but we had one 4 years ago. In fact we went up to POR a few days to use their pool area instead. Sorry you had a bad experience . In 10 trips we only had that one issue.

Interesting. As I've said, all resorts CAN have them. None are immune. Just matter of luck, bad luck maybe but luck
