My uncle asked me to find the cheapest place to buy flea/tick and heartworm medicine for a dog. I never owned a dog so I don't really know much about heartworm. My uncle also couldn't tell me what he used previously for heartworm. He did say he used frontline for flea/tick. He is on a limited budget and his dog was just diagnosed with diabetes so I want to help him find the cheapest place to buy the stuff. Can you buy heartworm medicine online. Is Drs. Foster and Smith the best place. Any help would be appreciated.

I use Heartgard. I buy it at Costco. It costs about $50/12 doses (small dog). For flea/tick I use Frontline plus. I buy the largest size and measure it out. My little dog gets 0.3 ml, my bigger dog gets 0.7 ml. Doing it that way, it costs me about $30/year. So I do both flea and tick and heartworm for 2 dogs for about $11/month.

check with your vet, my mom gets hers from her vet a lot cheaper than I can (I guess my vet doesn't discount) I use 800petmeds for the Heartguard and Frontline I get at the pet store when they have a coupon.

Start by checking with his vet. They often have funds set up to help people like him. Also check around for clinics. A friend told me of the great prices she found for shots and medication.

In any case anything he does should be cleared through the vet since the dog has health issues. A good vet should be wiling to work with him.

Also be aware that both Frontline and Heartgard offer both a money back guarantee and a satisfaction guarantee - meaning if his dog gets fleas that won't go away or contracts heartworms while on the preventatives, the company will pay for them. This guarantee is ONLY good if the products are purchased from a vet clinic. If purchased from a website or online pharmacy, they are not warrantied.

Frontline is usually buy 6 doses get 2 free when you buy it from a vet clinic as well, which makes it cheaper than most places can offer online. I know my clinic also offers a $50 mail in rebate when you buy 12 months of heartgard and 6 months of frontline at the same time through a program the manufacturer offers. Also a better deal than saving $10 by buying it online :)

thank you for all the replies. I am looking into all the suggestions from you.

Be careful with the Frontline. I had been using the Frontline on my small Yorkie for years, BUT not as often or as much as they instructed. I don't do it in the cold weather either. This past spring year with her being 15, it seemed immediately after applied she had problems and was sick. It ended up she has kidney disease. She was literally dying, couldn't get up, etc. I nursed her back with soup, etc., and now we have to give her subcu fluids every 2 days. This has been going on for several months but she is a lot better. I also give her a little mirtazapine to help with appetite and she even is playful. I really think the Frontline may have caused or at least exacerbated her kidney disease. She was sick soon after me putting it on her. It's hard bc you don't want fleas but for smaller or older dogs I would really be careful, use less or if an older dog with any problems not at all. It does work tho.
