Just in the last two weeks my pets have been dealing with fleas. Our dog is an inside dog, but she does go out several times a day and picks up fleas here and there. She's on flea control, but only just recently.

Now since she goes in and out, what she brings in hops onto the cat who also has a light problem. I just put flea control on her yesterday, but I have to get rid of the ones that are in the carpet and on her. Bathing is out of the question. Do powders work? I just can't wait for them to die off...new ones come in everyday.

And is there a carpet insecticide that will kill fleas immediately?

I want to nip this in the bud before it gets out of hand. Any suggestions appreciated! TIA!

We always used a flea comb on our cats and dogs. (2 or 3 times a day) I don't know about the newest chemical warfare, but the powders never worked for us.

Carpet...this is going to sound really silly...but at bedtime set up a pan of water on the floor with a flashlight against it. The fleas jump to the light and drown. I swear it works.

I would love any suggestions for NATURAL control, as well... that actually works - anyone have any suggestions? I have heard borax in carpets - but am afraid to try it...

I was going to suggest the same thing...olny I used oil instead of water. Apparently the fleas are attracted to the light at night and when they jump at it, they land in the water/oil and can't get out and they die. I hate fleas as do my 2 fur babies. Good luck.

We just used advantage on our animals--once they were treated...the rest died off. But we also don't have carpets and much places for fleas to hide.

Believe it or not, spray Ivory dish detergent in the yard. Use the garden sparyer that attaches to the hose, add the detergent and spray. We had a bad infestation a few years ago. Sprayed the Ivory and the fleas were gone.

Well, too late now of course, but just a friendly reminder, if ANY of your pets go outside, they ALL need to be on flea preventitive, as fleas will hitch a ride on anyone!

Good luck! :wave2:

Yea I was bad. I knew better than to wait this long to apply it, but last year we had zero fleas. We moved 2 hours south and I had NO idea they would be so bad here. They've really only appeared in the last few weeks...but its been hot in GA for months! :confused3

I talked to the vet today and she said keep them on the control and buy Adam's Flea Control which is a powder. That will take care of the ones that are on the cat immediately.

Thanks everyone for the suggestion. I don't think they are in the rugs, but I'm going to try that oil/water thing tonight. It'll be interesting to see if any flea corpses appear. :)

My guys have only had a serious problem in the past few weeks as well. I'm trying the pan of soapy water tonight! Both dogs got flea baths on Wed and are doing better, but I know the carpet and furniture is surely infested as well. I used the soapy water to collect the the remaining fleas with a flea comb afterwards on the puppy and it killed the ones I captured. If I can convince DH, I'll have him spray the yard too with sopay water.
