Flea Allergy?

I think my sweet chihuahua Hannah has a flea allergy. Last night I noticed that she had a bald spot at the base of her tail that looked red and irritated. I called today and got her an appointment with the vet tomorrow morning.

Well, when I got home tonight the spot had tripled in size! Bless her little heart she can't stop itching and biting. Is there anything I can do for her to help her through tonight? I feel awful for her.

I also wonder how she got this because she hasn't had it before (she's about a year and a half old) and we put the flea and tick prevention stuff on her.

Our dog is miserable this spring. We did the flea/tick stuff too and she is still itching like crazy. I think it is time to try a new food for her.

Ours has the same thing. We have a vet appointment coming up for her. In the meantime we got a calming spray at Petsmart with Aloe and Lanolin which seems to be easing her itching.

FYI update....just got off the phone with the vet, she said to ease the itching/pain until the vet appt, to give our pooch 1/2 a benadryl in the morning and half at night.

The vet said it's definitely an allergy of some sort. He gave us some spray and said to give her 1/4 a benadryl twice a day. She still scratching at this point. Poor girl.

FWIW....Don't bathe too often either. More often than every 2 weeks is too much. Once a month is better. Of course, I'm referring to a normal bathing schedule here not one prescribed by a vet using a medicated shampoo.

One of my cats has a flea allergy... he lost almost all of his hair and looked sooo pitiful.

It took about a year but we keep him on flea medicine and all of his hair came back. My sister saw him for the first time in months and didn't even recognize him!! He looks so adorable... and fluffy!

When he was losing his hair, one of my female cats would lay on him to keep him warm...

Our dog (see avatar) is allergic to flea bites too. He'll get a hot spot, and bite at it til it's raw.

The flea/tick drops do not repel fleas, unfortunately. They can't live on the dog, but they can bite once.

My Dalmatian has a terrible flea allergy. We keep her on Frontline during the summer, but she still may need a steroid shot if it is a particularly bad season. If I don't keep her on the flea stuff she does the same thing at the base of her tail. She will bite it until it bleeds.
