My niece has asked for a flat iron for Christmas. She has very thick hair and a lot of it. Do any of you have recommendations on a flat iron that would work well for her? I'm hoping for one in the $20 - $40 price range.

Do you have an Ulta store in your area? They have a large selection in a variety of price ranges. I'd think if her hair is really thick, she'd need at least a 2" iron.

Well, I don't have an answer for you but my DD has extrememly thick hair and trying to straighten her hair with a flat iron is like trying to empty a boat full of water with a thimble. There is just so much of it. She doesn't have the patience for it and now either wears her hair up or lately she's just left it down and natural. The funny thing is, the first time she wore her hair down her friends were asking her how long it took her to curl her hair and couldn't believe it when she told them it was natural. She really hates it though and keeps asking to get it straightened, which might be the best solution.

Personally I wouldn't get one in that range... the metal ones are severely damaging. If you can get ceramic it is the best and only what I use on my hair. However if you can only afford so much, then I would probably pick a gold plated one by any brand name like Conair or the like.

I personally use a Chi ceramic iron and it striaghtens FAR better than any other I have tried and returned.

I actually have a lot of hair that is a PITA to straighten, and I don't like having the 2" ones. It actually doesn't go any quicker with that and you can't gently curl under the ends as easily as a 1" one. To me that is the multipurpose width for those. Straightens well (and I have long hair as well) I can do curls with it as well. Very useful!

Be sure to get her something like Chi Silk Infusion. It is about $8/bottle but that stuff lasts forever. It will saver her hair from a LOT of damage that can be done with the flat irons. It also smells really good.

I also have really thick, curly hair.....I use a 2 inch ceramic flat iron and it works great!!!! I do have to do my hair in sections though, otherwise, I could not get it completely straight.

You need to get a ceramic one, it'll cost more that $40 though. Sorry.

I use a CHI turbo 2" ceramic flatiron too (phew! that's a typeful!). I was looking on Amazon, though, and they look pretty pricey. The mini one (.7 inch) is $62. Somehow I don't think my mom spent that much on mine. She must have found a sale somewhere...
If you're getting her some hair protection solution stuff (or potions as I like to call them), I'd suggest Biosilk - it's called silk therapy or smoothing solution or something. The first time I got my hair straightened was at the salon at Coronado springs, and they used biosilk. Whenever I smell that, I go straight back. :teeth:

Once in a while I do my dd-13 hair.
I basically part her hair from her ear around the back of her head to her other ear and keep it up with a clip.
I then do the bottom part in sections. Once I am done with the bottom part, I gradually let sections down and proceed to do the top part of her hair.
She loves when it is done, but I can only do it for her for school on my days off. It is a bit time consuming.

Does anyone know where I can buy this stuff?? Another poster also mentioned "Chi Silk Infusion"....where can I get that? TIA!!!

Daisy (Elizabeth) You can find the BioSilk at Trade Secrets in the mall and also alot of the JCPenney salons carry it, I have also seen it in some supermarkets around here. I have been using it for years ........it smells so good and just a little bit is all you need. Hope you had a good time, I enjoyed meeting you!

I bought a Chi 2" flatiron from my hairdresser for $80 on Monday. My friend bought the same thing at a kiosk at the mall on Monday for $70. However, the same friend later told me she found one on Amazon for $50, with free shipping.

My hairdresser told me the Chi flatirons would be on sale this week only, as Chi was doing some sort of promotion.
