I am thoroughly enjoying the forum, and I'm getting super revved up for our upcoming trip. I was reading another thread about attractions that were disappointing or not as extraordinary as others had promised. Someone mentioned "Carousel of Progress," and that sparked one of my all-time strangest experiences-Disney or elsewhere.
It was 1985, and I was traveling with a family of three children under the age of five. We went to the Carousel of Progress mid-afternoon for some down time. Three quarters of the way through the program and as the Carousel was moving, the Carousel literally stopped halfway between scenes. Long story short, we had to evacuate and climb down the emergency escape stairs on the side of the attraction.
Later in the day, we had just gotten off of the steamboat when we noticed a group of "shirts and ties" gathered not far from the base of the Swiss Family Robinson treehouse. They were looking at the grass and scratching their heads. We were finally able to peek through to see a three-foot baby gator lounging in the grass. There concern was, "Where's there's a little one, there's usually a big one."
Then, that evening, we decided to take the kids on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride before we headed out for the day. Each adult was in a car with a child. I was in the third car. Everything was fine until we got to the dark, large room, and our car jumped the track. It shut the entire ride down, set off emergency alarms, and caused a series of "Please remain in the car" announcements. We were eventually "rescued" by a cast member who escorted us, on foot, through the rest of the ride.
Those children are now in their thirties, and we all remember that day at Disney vividly.
