We did - well, sorta... three different days, all got rained out at the last minute. Finally *mostly* did it, although without all the pomp & circumstance, since it was really starting to rain pretty hard. Got some good pics, though, and of course, the certificate and the very neat collector's pin.
LibertyBelle is the gal to ask - she was FANTASTIC in helping us coordinate it.
Do you have specific questions about flag retreat???
It is everday, weather permitting, at 5pm (sometimes that changes but usually it is 5pm). The veterans are choosen at random during the day and you most certainly can ask at City Hall to be a participant in it (they have access to the log book and can tell you if it is avalaible that day or a date in the future. As was mentioned there is a certificate and a pin that are given to the veteran which is nice. The ceremony itself is very well done, with the Magic Kingdom Security Color Guard and "most of the time" the band. It is definetly an honor to those that participate. I have seen a lot of tears shed.
Can you set it up for a date in the future? How does that work, can we call or ask in person? We'll be at MK on two different days
so if it weren't avail. the first day we could try for the other day.
Would we need to check first thing in the morning if you have to be present to sign up?
Any & all veteran's who are present on Veteran's Day are encouraged to participate. Show up at the flagpole at about 4:00.
My husband did this 2 years ago & it was a big highlight. He was so proud to do this. We are returning this year at the same time so he can do it again.
All who participate are given a photo [& of course the opportunity to buy more...]. I took a ton of photos.

You can set it up for days in the future by stopping in at City Hall, they can log you in for whatever day you wish (as long as it is open...which it usually is). It is good to check in the morning so they don't try and find someone. If there is no one in the book the managers will find someone to particiapte (which is usually the case)
My dad was the veteran of the day yesterday and it was the highlight of his trip! We arranged it ahead of time through our concierge planning office and surprised my dad 10 minutes before! He did a great job and there were tears from mom, me and sis. The grandkids were proudly telling everyone that was their grandpa! He got a certificate, special pin and a free 5 x 7 photo taken by a Disney photographer. A gentleman and his family approached my dad after the ceremony, shook his hand and thanked him for serving our country. My 75-year old dad was speechless and very proud.
During a visit to WDW last month I was surprised (and maybe a little initially embarrassed) when my travelling companion "volunteered" me to participate in the Magic Kingdom retreat ceremony. It was a fantastic experience and I proudly display my certificate and photo. This is a great honor Disney has established for those of us who served in our country's military service. I salute WDW for a job well done. (Now I just have to figure out how to keep that very unique pin since my best friend has her eye on it.)
