Flag care

So, I'm cleaning out our backroom, which DH considers his room, and which I rarely go into. What a mess!!! But a great project for the end of the year/new year.
In the mess, I found the flag from DH's dad's casket. It's still folded, but very dirty. What is the etiquette - can we get it cleaned? Can I wash it? Or do I just need to clean it as best as I can until I can find a holder for it? I would love to surprise DH with it all cleaned up and in a holder, but I want to make sure I follow appropriate etiquette.

Not sure what proper etiquette is but DH is a volunteer firefighter and the year he was Chief we had a few flags cleaned. We took them to the dry
cleaners and they handled them for us. I can't remember how much is was,
I don't imagine much. Hope it helps.

This is according to my former military DH...a folded flag should never be unfolded. There is some meaning to each fold you can see in the link:
http://www.usflag.org/foldflag.html

He suggests to clean the folded flag as best you can until you can find a flag case.

Now, if you wanted to un-fold it, and have it cleaned, and re-folded, no "flag police" are going to come!

And I suspect you can find someone who can re-fold it properly.

Thanks for the info. I didn't think it should be unfolded, and I think DH would be hurt if I did that. But I will try to clean it as best I can and put in a case for him.
Back to the back room! I'll get it done this weekend!! how many sets of sheets can one family save? lol
