FL Residents--Does it bother you that...

Ah--but the difference is that you were also educated by taxpayers, as was I. Anne

There you go again assuming things about me - I went to private school so no my education was not paid for by taxpayers but paid for by my father.[/QUOTE]

Actually, I was too. But the fact still remains that you were entitled to the same public education as everyone else, paid for by taxpayer dollars. There is no such entitlement for home ownership.

We got our homeowners' policy renewal yesterday, and we're paying $174.xx towards Citizens. While of course it doesn't thrill me to pay more money, I still see this as an investment in my house if that makes any sense. Because of where we live, the next homeowners of this house could need to buy their insurance from Citizens. We do have a conventional insurance policy (thank goodness!), but I know that there are no guarantees here. I hate that Citizens is underfunded, but if I have to pay $174 a year to keep it solvent so it's there if I need it, then I'll deal.

I understand where you are coming from, but I don't understand why this shortfall isn't simply entirely carried by Citizen's insured's as opposed to every homeowner in the state. The shortfall was caused by claims from Citizen's insureds, not the rest of us with private insurance. I just don't understand the legality of this "tax" to sunsidize homeownership--often for people who can easily afford a higher bill to the detriment of people not insured by Citizens who that higher bill will be a burden to.

I don't think that each of us FL residents should be made to pay a tax to help subsidize others, but I do think that the people who build homes on the water and beaches should be forced to pay MORE since most of the time when a hurricane or tropical storm does come through the government is the one who ends up bailing alot of them out, they should not even be allowed to build so close to the water and the beaches and if they do then they can afford to pay sky high rates to pay for their own losses, and although I know that mobile homes are a high risk, many people cannot afford to live in $200,000 + homes and it is about all they can afford to do is live in a mobile home, I will never look down on the poorer or the elderly who just want a "home" of their own even if it is a mobile home! This country has so much money to send overseas etc. that it burns me up when it's always us "little guys" that are forced into helping our own people (like paying more insurance or paying more in taxes) Many of us that are in FL did not move here from expensive cities up north and bought homes that many that grew up here could never afford.

I know a LOT of people who were born and raised in Florida who own million dollar homes. It comes down to making good choices in life. Getting an education, even if it means student loans, choosing a career path that pays more than $7 an hour. I truly believe that EVERYONE has opportunities to better their lives and increase their personal wealth, some people just don't choose to do so for whatever reason. The rest of us shouldn't be penalized for their poor choices.

I'm walking distance from the beach and paid less than 6 figures for my home. Not everyone who lives near water is in a Mansion. :confused3

Though I agree with one thing--I don't wish to supplement anybody's insurance either.
