FJ motion sickness

I have never been nauseous on rides, but FJ was one of the first to give me a touch of nausea. I've been on all the other simulators (soarin, body wars, star tours, simpson, jimmy neutron, spiderman etc.) The simulator parts in FJ are fast moving and sometimes blurry which is a bad combination. If you close your eyes when you start to feel it coming on, you should be alright. The ride movement itself is not too bad

Plus you're moving and the screen is moving in sync with you. Tough to do all that well.

I think that Simpsons is worse then FJ, and Spiderman is not as bad as FJ. Definitely do the line even if you decide not to ride. If you can take meds to help, it is definitely worth it.

I've never had a problem with Soarin. I can ride Star Tours without meds, but it starts to get to me just a little bit. Not enough to take meds though. Forbidden Journey I had read about the motion sickness issues ahead of time, and I took a double dose of Dramamine in order to ride it. It did not work. :sad2: I was really looking forward to riding it, but within seconds of it starting I felt a wave of nausea come over me. After about 30 seconds I felt like if I didn't close my eyes, I was going to throw up. When I got off the ride I was in a cold sweat and shaking. I felt terrible for about an hour afterwards.

FJ bothered me and DH - and he isn't usually bothered at all with motion sickness. I would definitely say if Spiderman bothered you, you might just want to walk the queue for FJ and not ride. I thought the queue was definitely worth the time - if you're an HP fan.

I too am prone to motion sickness and in addition to the meclizine I have discovered that ginger candy throughout the day is a lifesaver. I take the Gin Gins by the Ginger People.

I rec this to my niece who gets very ill flying and since trying the ginger she has not been ill on a flight Someone also mentioned going on a ship and it worked wonders for that as well.

It comes in many different varieties and has a strong flavor and a warm sensation. I get mine at World Market but you can get it at Trader Joes and we have health food stores around us that also carry different varieties of the candy.

When people ask me what FJ is like, I ask if they've been on Spiderman. That's the closest comparison you can make. The earlier comparison of combining Soar'n and Dinosaur together is accurate, too.

It's not a roller coaster; it does not physically move fast along a track, though it is moving along one just like an omnimover. However, you're given the allusion through the transitions of IMAX screens (i.e. Soar'n) between physical 3D scenes (i.e. Dinosaur). You're lifted pretty high (but not upside down) and swung in various forward-facing directions. Not violently (it's very smooth) but if you get sick easily, I can see folks having a problem. It's suppose to simulate flying on a broom (or "flying bench" as they call them).

It's an incredibly awesome ride, but I'm disappointed that it is too intense for my parents to ride it. My mother gets motion sickness and still really wants to go; she thinks taking medication will help her but even then, I'm not so sure.

You can certainly still see the whole castle by taking the castle tour--and yes, it's worth seeing!

Thanks for this hint. I will check out Trader Joe's. I could use it for the ship too!

My husband is an amusement park junky who can ride anything and never get sick. I warned him about FJ and insisted he take a Meclizine the morning we went IoA.. He laughed and reminded me he never got sick. We went straight to FJ and when he got off, he was green. I've been married to this man for over 30 years and have never seen any amusement park ride even phase him. He said he got really nauseated at the very beginning of the ride as we were going through the chimneys. He insisted it was because of the Meclizine I had given him. He was off for the rest of the day. We went to the Studios the next day and he refused the Meclizine. He rode everything with no problem, then we went back over to Islands of Adventure to reride our favorites from the day before. He did fine on the Hulk, Spiderman, and Dragons, so decided to try FJ again. Again he was green when he came off. He has no idea why it affects him when other rides do not. This man rides the orange side of Mission Space with no problem. Motion simulator rides have never phased him, but FJ for some reason throws him for a loop. On the other hand, I'm the ride semi-chicken and have ridden it over and over with no problems at all.:confused3 In fact, when I was there last August/September solo I was staying on property and made early entry every morning just to ride FJ. I used the single rider line and would ride it 7-10 times in a row every morning. The CMs got to where they recognized me and said things like, 'How many times are you going to ride it today?":rotfl:

I guess until you try it, you'll have no idea how it may affect you. Star Tours, Body Wars, orange side of Mission Space, Soarin, Tea Cups, none of the coasters, Simpsons, Spiderman, etc have ever even phased my husband, but FJ knocks him for a loop and he's nauseated from the beginning of the ride all the way to the end. I'd think that between the two of us, I'd be the one that had trouble with it, but I can ride it over and over with no problem.

Ok, I am getting concerned now, that we (DS and myself) won't be able to ride. I don't want DS feeling sick all day. We had this problem last year at WDW, (with the heat and the rides) he felt dizzy.

We will arrive at IOA, Sun. June 5 around 4p, if I go to FJ and try to ride single rider,(check it out beforehand) do you think I will be able to do this? I read something about, in busy times, you have to have a return ticket :confused3 I would rather I feel sick for one evening, than ruin DS first full day on Mon. Any advice would be great!

Oh, and I plan for us to use: Motion Ease, Sea Bands, Bonine or Drammine (or Benadryl for DS) and maybe get some ginger candy.....is this overkill?

You should be able to ride that evening. If they're handing out entry tix, you just might have to wait a couple hours before you get into WWoHP.

The other advice I have would be to ride on as empty a stomach as possible. This helps DW.

Thank you everyone for the great info and expanded questions!!

To sum it up, closed eyes should be ok?
If I do just the castle tour, I have heard I will miss the sorting hat, is this true?
If I will indeed miss the sorting hat, is there a chicken-exit after that part of the line? So I could see that but still escape the ride.

Oh, and I forgot about EE - the backwards portion made me queasy, but I was able to recover within 15 mins. Tea Cups are ok - I danced as a kid so I can "spot" fairly well. Flying - have to be able to see the horizon when the plane is turning - not sure how I will handle flying in the dark on my way back from Universal

Again, thank you everyone!!

The Sorting Hat is down the hall a bit from the Castle Tour queue exit. It is visible but not audible for the most part. I'm sure if you ask a TM to let you closer, they will let you.

I am motion sickness prone, on cruises I need the scope patch can't ride ferry boats, any rides that launch or do loops. Can't do tea cups, Soarin or simpsons rides. I really wanted to give FJ a try as I was wasn't going to back to Orlando for awhile. Let me tell you instantly I knew this ride wasn't going to work out. I had to sit there holding tight and keep my eyes closed the whole time. It does all sorts of movements and I swear we went in a loop or upside down? Afterwards my body body handled it good wasn't usually dizzy and needing to sit down afterwards. I think it was I closed my eyes and let my body move with the ride. On the other hand my niece who rode with me is a ride junkie she had to sit on the floor afterwards from being so dizzy, so not like her.

It may have seemed that way, but the ride does in fact not go upside down. There is at least one point where you are entirely on your back and looking straight up (the Whomping Willow scene), but you are never upside down.

DW got sick on FJ but has never gotten sick on FJ. Best tip is to keep your head back against the headrest and only look where the vehicle is facing.

I'm confused, lol.
