Five in a studio vs. four in a 1 Bedroom???

CCV was highly limited by being hotel unit conversions. RIV was from the foundation up. CCV does not fit 5 because they are truly small and you cannot move support walls and beams converting WL rooms.

This is on you for buying CCV.

Why did you purchase at CCV? We are a family of five. You’re right—travel prices basically double when you add a fifth. We own at AKV and SSR. Love AK for its sleeper chair. If not staying there, we gravitate towards OKW for its space and sleeper chair. If we stay at BWV, another favourite, we bring a camping cot—very comfortable and packs in our carry on luggage. We will never book CCV because of the need for a two bedroom—too much space we do not need and too many points. The hard four occupancy was a deal breaker.

Really looking forward to the SSR Reno with the new pull down bed.
Just FTR, we bought at BLT, NOT CCV. In fact, the DVC guide we met with kindof threw up his hands when he found out we were a family of 5. It was cool of him to be honest - we really aren't a good fit for CCV and that's what he was selling.

Some of the responses here - wow, just wow. Did not know this was such a hot button 🤷‍♂️

I do know what you mean, kind of. We are a family of four. When we went to Europe, it was hard to find a room that slept more than two. Paris was the worst. I saw a ‘family’ room listed. It slept two adults and one child under 9!

I own at BLT and CCV. I bought CCV so we would have enough points to get a 2 bdrm for our stays. You can’t haVe too much space (or too many bathrooms).

Another view:

I was not happy when they added the under tv bed at bwv. Now the table is under the tv and unusable if the tv is on. I have no issue with them adding capacity to studios & 1 bedrooms for new resorts, but hate that they altered what we purchased after the resort was sold out! IMO, that's wrong.

Increasing the occupancy also increases the percentage of common costs allocated to DVC and lowers it for the hotel side.

Why do you say this? We bought BLT because the 1 br's do sleep 5. The AoA 1br suites sleep 6. I will be the first to admit I am not familiar with the 1br suite layouts for all of the resorts, but it seems like you could do this pretty easily with a murphy bed and a pull-out chair sleeper. BLT has the pull-out chair and pull-out sofa. The dining area seems really inefficient though - could easily do the murphy bed there like the ones in AoA. I have a hard time believing the 1br's at the other resorts are all that much different.

BLT is substantially bigger than many of the 1 beds.

I do want to air a bit of a gripe on this topic. This is something you just don't see coming as a parent but it's true - the world is built for families of 4. Cars fit 4 comfortably, 5 not as much. Go ahead, try and book a regular hotel room anywhere - maximum occupancy is 4. OK, so we have to stay in suites. How about let's go on a cruise? Yeah - staterooms fit 4 and absolutely no more. they have a few higher-end suites that fit more but the price skyrockets - or you book 2 staterooms...or you just get priced out - bummer.

So yeah, we knew going in that a lot of the DVC 1 br's only sleep 4 - but comeon Disney! Throw us families of 5 a bone why don't you? did you seriously not know families of 5 have this dilemma? Of course you did. Now, if it had just been OKW, fine, it's the first, there's a learning curve - but no. CCV was the newest when we bought and it absolutely will not sleep 5. Did Disney take the architect behind the woodshed and explain how dumb this is until they fixed it? No. Apparently us families of 5 are just obligated to really crank up the points and book 2 br's. Yeah, no. Credit where it is due, RIV 1 br's do sleep 5, but the point chart on that one is, well, might as well book that 2 br somewhere else, you know?

The bittersweet of this is in a couple of years my son will be off to college and we won't have this dilemma anymore. That does raise a different set of issues than the family of 4 does as they age into needing more space - that problem is already solved in our case. It's just too bad Disney didn't think this one through.

Thanks for letting me vent...

Or families of five can buy enough points for a 2 bedroom. Thats what we did for 5 and it works.

Try being a family of 7! We always (obviously) have stay in 2 br or grand villas, though at Poly we have to squeeze into 2 studios. My parents always travel with us and they are DVC too and between us we pool points for our annual trips. It was our choice to have a large family though, but it sure makes for tight accommodations.

Weren’t the Poly studios a hotel conversion too, they were just built when hotel rooms were bigger. Also our last trip to WDW we had 5 people, we were able to get hotel rooms on the drive down and back that slept 6. Had two queen beds and a sleeper sofa. We are going to have 5 agin this spring. At WDW we get a 2 bedroom when we have a 5th guest.

And Poly only converted to studios - no 1BRs, no 2BRs. CCV they handled differently.

It depends on whether you are on the outer side of the C or on the inner side of the C. We were just in an outside one bedroom and were amazed at how much bigger it was than the one we had stayed in previously on the inside of the C. Maybe five week in width along the window.

The Polynesian studios were converted hotel rooms, but the three buildings that were converted already had larger rooms than all the other buildings. I think they were later buildings that were added at the end of the construction. We were in Moorea in 1997 on our first trip with two adults and three kids (we brought our two nieces with us) and we had plenty of room for a single hotel room. Two queen beds and a twin sized day bed, plus a table with two chairs and plenty of space for open suitcases on the floor (the girls brought lots of stuff). The bathroom was a lot smaller than it is in the studio; it was kind of long and narrow, tub and toilet on one side, sink(s) on the other.

What Disney learned with Old Key West is that could make the units much smaller and sell for more money.
