The Cast:
The “H” family… Me, 42, planner extraordinaire, hates wasting a minute of Disney touring time… DH, 38, goes w/the flow, doesn’t mind sleeping late but also likes to be at the parks early (you figure it out!) and is a great navigator in that he knows how to get from anywhere to everywhere and can find bathrooms whenever someone needs one! DD, 11, loves to sleep late/is practicing to be a teenager, is not a Disney-freak like her mother, but enjoys the trip and goes w/the flow with a smile and minimal complaining (most of the time)… DS, 8.5, *loves* everything Dis just like Mom, is a thrill rider, will try anything once (or twice) and is up and at ‘em early and willing to stay late… suffers from peanut/tree-nut allergies.

The “M” family (friends of the “H” family, who after hearing about our past three trips decided they’d give it a try)… MrM, 48, just smiles all the time and goes w/the flow, loves to eat but has newfound health issues that restricted his diet considerably… MrsM, 40, thinks she’s Tinkerbell… suffers from UMS (ugly mood swings)… is incredibly frugal yet wants the best, has very high standards yet is not willing to pay for them, all around difficult but we love her anyway… KAM, 9yo dd to Mr/MrsM, always smiling, first time visiting since she was 3yo… BAM, 7yo ds to Mr/MrsM, has a bit of his mother in him, can be fresh at times, but also fun-loving and anxious to see Disney for the first time (‘cause his visit as a 6 month old didn’t count!)

AND, we’re off!

Thursday, Jan 12

Picked the kids up from school at lunchtime, totally to their surprise (they thought we were leaving the next day)… had an uneventful trip to the airport and nice flight to MCO… got DME after what felt like a long wait, but it was probably only 20-30 minutes and headed to Pop Century…

The line to check in at Pop was not too long, but we hit some snarls at check-in… we needed connecting rooms and they were hard to come by… it all worked out at the end but it was late, everyone was extremely tired… the M family had a screw-up w/their ressies (lesson learned: check those docs when they arrive in the mail!!!!) and had thought they booked two rooms but only had one upon arrival… after having four CMs working to find them another room (on a sold-out weekend!) as well as checking other resorts (I had my fingers crossed we’d all upgrade to the wilderness lodge, which was my first choice but MrsM said it was too costly, even though we would have been able to go from four rooms to two, not understanding that it would only be a few bucks more and you’d get more for your bucks… penny-wise and pound foolish according to DH!) Anyway… after we were checked in, we made our way to the food court for a very late dinner and then hiked to our room in the 80’s building #7 (it was a long long walk the first night, but we later found plenty of “shortcuts” to make it a nice two minute walk). My kids went in the pool (at 11pm) but MrsM would not allow her kids to join them (this was a recurring theme, I’ll attempt not to mention it every time it occurred) :faint:

Friday, January 13th – Beautiful Blue Skies & Sunshine w/a Few Drops of Rain Mid-day

The plan was to hit MK at opening and ride a few rides before our 10:10 adr’s at CRT … HA HA HA! By the time we got everyone up and out (in their defense, it was late when we all finally got to bed) it was after 9am (OUCH!)… so we stopped in the hub to meet a few characters, watched most of Cinderellabration on the Castle stage and then headed inside for breakfast… oh, well… so much for space mtn w/out a line… sigh… breakfast was good but not great… I was disappointed in having Cinderella in the lobby rather than touring the restaurant… and since when is Wendy Darling a “princess?!” DD’s fave, Jasmine, was not there and that was a bummer as well… but that’s not to say we did not enjoy!

From there we hit tomorrowland, visiting stitch and space mtn… everyone that rode it loved it (moms and kids… dads sat out!) and then we visited fantasyland, riding everything it had to offer w/minimal lines, fastpassing as we could, the big kids loved dumbo – go figure, everyone loved Philharmagic… we saw lots of characters, which thrilled the kids to no end… we stopped for some snacks along the way and everyone had a pretty good afternoon… we got fastpasses for splash mtn but there was a sensor problem and it was closed when we tried to go back but were told that our FPs would “never expire” so we held on to them to use another day… dd wanted to skip Haunted Mansion, so she and I took a walk (as if we needed more walking) and found out that BAMs fave character (Woody) was in the Diamond Horseshoe Saloon, so we got on line and called them to tell them to meet us there! He was thrilled! We visited the Hall of Presidents for the first time ever and I was pleasantly surprised… it fit in well w/dd’s social studies classes, so that was a bonus!

Dinner was at 5:30 at Chef Mickey’s so we bid farewell to the Magic Kingdom (‘til Monday) and hopped on the monorail… after a short wait for our table, we were good to go… I had planned a Wishes Cruise from the CR dock after dinner, but no one knew about it… I had made a certificate and had our server “present” it to the table, letting everyone think it was pure pixie dust… she did a fabulous job of presenting it, gave us a big signed photo of Mickey/Minnie/etc which was a nice surprise… so, off to the marina we went… but that was not w/out a hitch… MrsM was mood-swinging and maybe did not feel well, and it was cold and she was not dressed right, and she’d been sick last week, and being out on the water might mean a relapse, etc etc etc… we all ignored her and boarded our pontoon boat where our captain gave us a wonderful tour of all the MK resorts, tossed in some little known facts, showed us the “shoe tree,” and pulled up in front of the Electric Water Pageant just as it was lighting up… PERFECT! Then we motored up close to the MK for an amazing breathtaking view of the fireworks… having never really experienced Wishes up close, nor heard the soundtrack, it was marvelous! We all LOVED IT! I was hoping it was the pixie dust we all needed to put smiles on everyone’s face and it almost worked… MrsM was still a stick in the mud as my g’ma would say… but whatever… I was happy and that’s what counted ;) The captain was kind enough to drop us at MK so we did not have to take the monorail back to the bus stop so we were able to get back to Pop in no time flat and my kids went to the arcade and the pool and the M family went to bed…

Saturday, January 14th – Brrrrr! Cool and Windy

Today the plan was to eat breakfast at the resort and be at the bus stop by 8:30 for Epcot… sounds easy enough… our family set a wake up call (love those!) and did it… even managed to squeak in some arcade time too… welllllll… at 8:30 here come the M family, but they had not had breakfast yet… oops! Okay, we’ll get them something to eat in Epcot, but as I had warned them the night before, the options are limited which is why I strongly suggested the Pop food court… but wait! Even though the Epcot bus was just rounding the bend, MrsM needed her coffee, so we waited for the next bus while she ran to get coffee… sigh… it’s almost painful to know that we’re burning touring time! LOL!

First stop after the turnstiles is Soarin’ and it did not disappoint… and the wait was not too long (maybe 20 minutes?)… LOVED IT! Voted everyone’s #1 ride… from there we grabbed fastpasses for Livin’ w/the Land and the M family had some breakfast at sunshine seasons (MrsM was not pleased w/the selection, but them’s the breaks for sleeping late!) ;) rode, Livin’ and the kids always get a kick out of the Mickey shaped pumpkins!

After the Land, we went to Living Seas… loved Turtle Talk! Did some touring and some gift shopping… next stop was Imagination (I know it has another name, but I’m drawing a blank!) and we rode Figment w/no line at all… everyone went to Honey, I Shrunk the Audience ‘cept for me and my kids as they just did not want to, so we watched the hopping water fountains which were especially entertaining because they did not always hit their intended target due to the wind the water landed in all kinds of places, including *on* the kids! LOL!

Everyone was hungry for lunch so we headed to Mexico where we all enjoyed our food when we could keep it from blowing away in the wind! From there we toured the World Showcase, riding the few “rides” but not watching any of the movies/shows (Why not? Not sure!) After WS we went back to Future World to ride Spaceship Earth and Mission Space… I knew ds and I loved it, but the M kids *really* loved it (after they talked MrsM into allowing them to go on)!

Dinner was at LeCellier and it did not disappoint… I had the 7oz filet and it was delicious… the side of mushrooms made it all the more better! And I LOVED the maple crème brulee… yummy!

We were torn as to whether or not to stay for Illuminations… it was late, it was cold, everyone was tired, cranky was a good adjective… we decided to skip it… headed out of the park, got a nearly empty bus back to Pop and all the kids and dads went to the arcade while the moms did some laundry… everyone went to bed happy!

Sunday, January 15th – Still Cool but Less Wind

MGM DAY! YAY! The H family LOVES MGM! ::yes::

Again, we planned to have an early breakfast and be on the road in time for park opening… but that did not happen… the Ms were late (apparently the way they booked their package they had to check out and back in again)… the food court was crowded… breakfast took longer than anticipated… we were at the park just before 10am (argh, again, very painful for me! LOL!) and the line to get in was a mile long… MrsM could not understand it… *I* could! Sigh…

So, we hit the Tower of Terror first thing and the line was minimal… we were cruising right in… ‘cept MrsM had to take a potty break when we were nearly at the front so we had to let about 50 people pass us by while waiting for her to return… then she and my DD decided they were not going to ride after all… so they waited for us at the exit… it was great! We got a GREAT photo! (of course, I bought it! the M’s asked if they could get a copy from me) and when we got off raving about how great it was, MrsM changed her mind and wanted to ride, so we took advantage of “baby swap” (even though my baby is 11yo) and MrsM rode the ride and my DS and KAM got to ride a second time… YAY!

From there we did a whole bunch of stuff… waited twice on a long line to see Lilo and Stitch and every time we got near the front their time was up and Chip & Dale came out… ugh… finally, after the third try (read: 1.5 hours!) we saw Lilo & Stitch… we also rode some rides and saw some shows in between… I was disappointed in the Narnia attraction… skipped the Great Movie Ride… was sad that Millionaire was closed for taping… but enjoyed most everything else MGM had to offer… the H family opted out of the Stunt Show (we just saw it in September) and hit a few extra rides/shows… the M family enjoyed the Stunt Show, so all was well…

After the parade, we met for an early dinner at Hollywood & Vine and it was outstanding… I’m getting hungry just recalling it… our family has dined there before and “liked” it, but this time we “loved” it! :)

After dinner we all went to Indiana Jones and that was fun… and then we made our way to Fantasmic which was, well, fantastic! LOL! LOVED IT!! LOVE IT EVERY TIME! :)

If I remember correctly, we skipped both the arcade and the pool this night and hit the hay…

Monday, January 16… our last day… Magic Kingdom Again! Blue Skies and Sunshine!

We toyed w/the idea of hitting the Animal Kingdom but it’s just not a family fave and it was too cold to ride Kali so we opted to go back to the MK and were glad we did! Besides, the M family did not want to go to “the zoo” no matter how often we told them “it’s NOT a zoo!” LOL!

Our family chose to go for an early breakfast at Crystal Palace but there was no talking the M family into it… so we were up when Mickey called at 6:45 and on the bus less than an hour later… we thoroughly enjoyed our buffet breakfast… best eggs I’d had in ages… great character interaction too! From there we rode space mtn and snagged fastpasses to come back later… and somewhere around 10am as we were visiting w/the Incredibles my phone rang and it was the M family and they were outside MK waiting in line, and again, MrsM could not understand why there was a line… we met them over by Magic Carpet ride and visited PoC and Treehouse and Jungle Cruise and Tiki Room together… we had the great pleasure of meeting Jasmine *and* Aladdin which just made DDs day! Awesome character interaction there!

Next stop were the other two mountains… Asked if we could use our fastpasses from Friday ‘cause the ride had been shut down and they said yes, but just as they said yes, there was another problem w/the ride and it was closed again… so we grabbed fastpasses for Big Thunder and headed off to have lunch… my kids had their hearts set on Casey’s and the M family was wanting to try Columbia Harbor House so we split up again (we have since decided that splitting up was not a bad thing and we should have tried it sooner! LOL!) meeting back at Big Thunder in time for our fastpasses… and Splash was up and running again and they honored our old fp’s so that was great!

From there we took the train to Toontown where we stumbled across a whole slew of characters, RARE ONES according to DS, just waiting by the train station… we got Max’s autograph and that made DSs day! LOL! after that the kids rode Barnstormer and we went back to Space Mtn for another ride but just before we got there, DD said she felt really sick and nauseous so while the rest of the gang rode Space, she/I hung out in/near the restroom… she made the boo-boo of drinking from the water fountain over in Toontown and I think that did her in… she rallied a bit as we headed over the Liberty Tree Tavern for dinner but was really out of sorts… she tried eating, but dinner came right back up, poor baby  the rest of us enjoyed our dinner… oh, but how I love their salad! this was supposed to be our Spectro night, but we had to cut it short and get her back to the resort… I felt so badly for her ‘cause I know she felt like she was ruining our evening… but we all survived… after a short nap in the room, she felt much better, and joined DS in the pool… spectro will run again next time we’re there!

Not the best end to a magical vacation… but not the worst either! (last year, on our last day, we were mis-informed that an item on the Boma buffet was safe for ds’ food allergies and it wasn’t and he had an allergic reaction… so sickness seems to be our last day theme unfortunately.)

Tuesday morning we all slept a little later than usual, I did some laundry (needed those sweatshirts and long pants clean for our trip back to NY) and the kids swam in the pool… we had breakfast in the room (from the food court) and headed to DME for our ride back to MCO… after an uneventful flight, we arrived home safely with lots of great memories! :flower:

Great report - I have a friend too that we travel with, who has to have her coffee in the am, luckily they stay in a DVC 1 bedroom and she can make it before we meet up. Luckily she is one to make sure we make the most out of our trip. But not always on time...

I'm glad you had fun - my husband was in Orlando for a convention this past weekend too - could not believe he did not go to WDW - we have annual passes and he had 2 free days!

crazy man! i would have had a hard time going to the conference ;)

blending styles is difficult... but we survived and there was actually talk of another shared vacation in the future!

my kids loved the trip the best of all... they were sooo excited to show their friends "the world" :)

You sound just like our family. We love to go early and get a jump on everyone. It would have been hard with another family. Glad you still had fun though!!!! Can't wait for our next rip after reading your report!!! thanks!!!!

I agree with you too, I like to get up early and tackle the parks to take advantage of the early entry for resort guests. I don't think we would be able to go with another family unless we did some splitting up like you did.

Also my husband and 2 sons are late night people, so the next we go we'll probably take advantage of the late evenings hours for resort guests.

Glad you still had fun. Would you take the M family again with you to Disney.

Thanks for a great two-family trip report. Give yourself a pat on the back for having patience and putting up with the other family! I think you did so well. I "have" to go, go, go commando style. I think I might have ditched them earlier!

Enjoyed your report. We went with another family once and had a good time.

Question: Why do you recommend avoiding the water fountains?

we avoid "local" water wherever we travel 'cause it wreaks havoc on dd and dh's bellies... ds and i can handle it but bottled water works better for us...

i would travel w/the M family again, but this time, instead of just giving MrsM brochures, printouts off the web, and my UOG, i would make sure she actually READ THEM! they were completely clueless and relied upon us for everything, even after i urged them to do some of their own research (while handing them all the materials!)... it would not have been so bad but i encouraged them to learn about the dining plan in advance and when breakfast was over and they saw that my kids had milk and theirs did not, she got in a huff that i never told them that milk was available... well, if you don't do your homework, don't huff at me ;)

also, when booking yourself or working w/a TA it is VERY important, imo, to check your documents when they arrive... well, even after asking on the phone the week before "did you get your docs? are they all in order?" imagine our surprise when we were on our way to the airport and i looked thru them to discover that they had only *one* room booked when they wanted TWO! so we spent the entire car ride, all our waiting time in the airport and our DME ride calling our TA and the resort and central ressies and and and because she opted not to check... that's the kind of stuff i struggle with...

anyway... all that being said... i think we're going to pennsylvania together in april so future trips are planned...

Nice trip report. We recently went to WDW with friends and their 2 kids. While we had a nice time I'm not sure if we'd do it again with this family. They run on a completely different schedule than us.

Enjoyed reading your reports ~ Thanx for posting.

Great report! And I could feel your pain...I've been with my sister's family...and it was TOUGH!!!

Now we're pretty darn selective about who we invite to go with us!

glad everyone is enjoying it... it was fun writing :)

yep, we'll go on other vacations, but i think disney might just become sacred ;) or we'll set some serious ground rules!
