Fitting in @ school (5th grade)

Take your cues from him. It sounds like he wants to continue. He seems to have pretty strong self esteem and as the mother of a "weird geek" I know how important that is. I just tell my son that not everyone in life is going to be his friend and that many people say hurtful things because they really feel bad about themselves. It has worked so far, but we have middle school to brave next year.

My son isn't a "sports kid", but he loves tennis so that might be another option for you. I always wonder if our parents felt such pressure to make everything alright for us. I wish my Mom was around to ask. I hope it all works out for you.

I just read through this thread and I have to tell you, I can relate. I have a fourth grade son who just doesn't seem to click with the other boys. He tried to pal around with a couple of kids from his classroom. They were really mean to him - telling him they'd meet him someplace and not showing up, ditching him etc. I tried to warn him off these kids but, unfortunately, he had to find out on his own. Since then he's been afraid to try with anyone else. Breaks my heart.

We had our experience with this as well. The boys would tell my son "If you do such and such, we will be your friend". Fortunately a teacher saw it and let me know. Between the both of us it was stopped, and now my son knows you shouldn't have to "do" anything for someone to be your friend.
