Tips for Fishing with Kids

Avoid the kid’s stuff

An ultra-light spinning or spin casting rod and reel combo is usually easier for kids to use.

Small hooks = big catches
Avoid hooks larger than size 10 (hook sizes run backwards—size 12 is smaller than size 10). Fish won’t readily take large hooks unless they are feeding voraciously.

Most of the time, a subtle presentation is needed to catch wary fish. Tiny hooks also allow small fish to “inhale” the bait, rather than nibble at the hook. If a fish swallows the hook and you want to return it to the water, simply cut the line as close to the hook as possible and release the fish.

Lighten up your line

Light line will do the job, preferably 6-pound test line or less. Unless you’re targeting monster catfish or marauding muskies, light line is your best bet.

Bag the big bobbers

Bobbers (or floats) are used to suspend your bait in the water and alert you when to set the hooks. The harder the bobber is to pull under, the harder it will be to hook a fish. Small floats will help convince the fish to take your tasty bait and run. “Slip” bobbers work well for kids. Slip bobber rigs cut down on the amount of line needed at the end of the rod and are easier to cast. Small ice fishing bobbers can provide a light touch any time of year.

Sink it with shot

Sinkers help get your line down to the fish. They can also create “zero buoyancy.” Ideally, you want your bobber to just barely float on the top of the water. Squeeze small BB-sized split shot sinkers onto your line one at a time until your bobber nearly sinks from the weight. Since there is very little resistance when the fish takes the bait, it is more likely to bite the bait and run.

Great big gobs of worms won’t do

There’s no need to use whole whopping-big, writhing night crawlers on your hook. Keep the bait approximately the size of your hook. Live bait such as worms, bee moths or crickets work best. Cut the bait to fit your hook.

Mothers Day Fishing With Mom
By Ronnie Garrison

My mom died on November 19, 2000. About four years before that we started noticing something was not quite right with her, and soon realized she was developing Alzheimer's Disease. Two years later we had to put her in a nursing home because she required full time care. She had not recognized me since a few months before that.
She was my first fishing partner and she is the reason I am such a fanatic about fishing now. Those memories helped me get through the terrible time in my life when she died. I will never go fishing without thinking of her.

All the wonderful comments, thoughts and prayers from the people here also made a great difference. Fishermen are some of the best people on earth, and times like these bring that home even more.

I hope every one reading this has someone to take them fishing, or to take fishing. If you have children, make memories for them and you now. It will last both of you a lifetime.

I am a fisherman, but I never exaggerate...I just remember BIG !!!

My mom died 3 years ago but shortly before she died we were at my Aunts lake house and I got a picture of her and my daughter cane-pole fishing off the bank at her favorite spot in the world with her only granddaughter. I have this photo in a spot where it is one of the first and last things I see every day and it makes me smile every time! It is true some of the best memory's are made fishing especially when your mom is involved!

I agree, some of the best memory's are made while fishing, mikeymouse1.
It's a wholesome, relax'n and fun activity that can be had by all.It also gets you acquainted with/reacquainted with nature. Couldn't tell you how many times I've said,"I've never seen that before !"

Every once in a while I like to go back to the pond at dusk and watch the Bass feed.
Theres a time of year when the drought starts to set in and the water level goes down slowly.Just when the water starts showing the slants of the banks, all the minnows and small swimmers stay up in the shallows, in the mud areas.
Well, kinda like watching a TV show where the whales will slide up onto the beach to grab a seal,,the Bass in the pond do the same thing! It's one of the neatest things I've ever seen ! These Bass will come screaming up,slide clear out of the water about 2-2 1/2 feet onto the mud grab a mouth fulla swimmers and then flip-flop their way back into the pond ! It's awesome to see !!
So is this swimming animal not as stoopid as people think,,
or is it really good instincts ???

One recent Sunday, a young boy arrived to his Sunday school class late. His teacher knew that the boy was usually very prompt and asked him if anything was wrong.
The boy replied no, that he was going to go fishing, but that his dad told him that he needed to go to church instead. The teacher was very impressed and asked the boy if his father had explained to him why it was more important to go to church rather than to go fishing. To which the boy replied, "Yes, ma'am, he did. My dad said that he didn't have enough bait for both of us."

If you have children/grandchildren, then take the time to read this rather long post.

“Take me fishing. Because my wedding will be sooner than you think. Take me fishing. And show me that worms aren’t icky. Take me fishing. You can think about work later. Take me fishing. Because I get the giggles when the boat bounces. Take me fishing. Because my wedding will be sooner than you think.”

First things first, the actual fishing is a long distant second to the time we get with our kids. If you can keep this in mind the experience will be lifelong. This is not as easy as it sounds, I have found out. What they will remember is our fishing trips, they will remember beating dad, spending time on the water, enjoying nature and occasionally catching a fish.
What more could you want.

Through experience I have managed to make a lot of mistakes in how to take kids fishing, so learn from my mistakes and lesson the trauma on yourself. Believe you me this is an event that will be cherished forever, but it is not without pain…

- Do your research and find out the “hot bite” and “hot bait”. Don’t go fishing for trout in mid-summer and don’t even try to rely on those TV super baits. Worms are always a good reliable bait.

- Bring a camera (catch and release), extra clothes (think about it; kids + water = more clothes) snacks, and a cell phone if you have one. It is OK for them to call mom or a friend to brag.

- It may be easier with older kids to try night fishing. The bite is usually much better, and no need to wake them up at 0330 to catch the morning bite!

- Make sure you check their equipment and ensure that they have good line and sharp hooks. There isn’t much worse than missing fish after fish because of something that could have been prevented.

- THIS IS IMPORTANT ! Put a rubber band around your wrist to remind yourself this is a day of bonding and not fishing. Use the rubber band to snap your wrist when you forget this, then apologize.

- If you are fishing from a boat, limit the amount of gear up on the deck (number of rods, tackle, clothes, shoes, etc…). Most of this stuff does not float when accidentally kicked overboard when they try and see how far their head goes under water.

- Plan for the whole day. Don’t rush to get no where. Take the time enroute to the water to get hot chocolate and doughnuts. Take a break for McDonalds in the middle of the day (yes it does constitute a drive there and back). Take the scenic, less traveled route home if available and get take out to bring home so stories can be told to the whole family over dinner.

- If you can’t control yourself and have to fish, try and only bring one child per trip. Two or more kids under ten and the odds of your fishing helping the situation are dismal.

These are some things to take into consideration when taking kids fishing, whether they are yours or not. Best rule of thumb is to remember that it is a day together, enjoying each other’s company, not just a day of fishing. Never forget that our children are our most precious resource and what we do, or fail to do, will forever stay part of their lives. Help them learn how to make the environment a better place and at the same time you will be developing a life long relationship. Take advantage of every opportunity… because my wedding will be sooner than you think.

Fishing,,it does a body good.

Went to the lake for the first time this season, for a couple hours. .
Was a beautiful day , but the weather leading up to this day has been really friggn nasty.
We did however catch 6 swimmers. On the small side, but I honestly wasn't expecting to catch that.

Yeah baby, fishing season is on !!

Hit the pond yesterday for bout a hour. First swimmer I pulled out was bout a 3 lb. cat and then a whole messa bream after that, :woohoo:

Nice to be doing a little fish'n again.

My neighbor down the road from us has a pond,,we had so much rain that yesterday he was walking the flat land picking up the big fish and putt'n them back in his pond:lmao:
Seems when the pond flows,, so do the fish ! :rotfl2:

hey, wait, I wonder if I still have fish in our pond ???:confused3

Your fishing stories remind me of a new song out by Trace Adkins, "Just Fishin." You should listen to it.

Here are the lyrics:

I’m lost in her there holdin’ that pink rod and reel
She’s doin’ almost everything but sittin’ still
Talkin’ ‘bout her ballet shoes and training wheels
And her kittens
And she thinks we’re just fishin’

I say, “Daddy loves you, baby” one more time
She says, “I know. I think I got a bite.”
And all this laughin’, cryin, smilin’ dyin’ here inside’s
What I call, livin’

And she thinks we’re just fishin’ on the riverside
Throwin’ back what we could fry
Drownin’ worms and killin’ time
Nothin’ too ambitious
She ain’t even thinkin’ ‘bout
What’s really goin’ on right now
But I guarantee this memory’s a big’in
And she thinks we’re just fishin’

She’s already pretty, like her mama is
Gonna drive the boys all crazy
Give her daddy fits
And I better do this every chance I get
‘Cause time is tickin’
(Yeah it is)

And she thinks we’re just fishin’ on the riverside
Throwin’ back what we could fry
Drownin’ worms and killin’ time
Nothin’ too ambitious
She ain’t even thinkin’ ‘bout
What’s really goin’ on right now
But I guarantee this memory’s a big’in
And she thinks we’re just fishin’

She ain’t even thinkin’ ‘bout
What’s really goin’ on right now
But I guarantee this memory’s a big’in
And she thinks we’re just fishin’
Yeah, aww, she thinks we’re just fishin’
We ain’t only fishin’
(This ain’t about fishin’)

What very awesome fish ! Isn't it great to see young people catch their first fish !
Fishing isn't for everyone, but I believe that all young people should be able to experience fishing and the thrill of catching at least once, :thumbsup2
Did your young'ns catch those in the pond behind your home ?

Tygansmom,
very cool song, I'm a fan of Trace Adkins but havn't heard that song yet.
Another very cool song is I'm Gonna Miss Her.

Well I love her
But I love to fish
I spend all day out on this lake
And hell is all I catch
Today she met me at the door
Said I would have to choose
If I hit that fishin' hole today
She'd be packin' all her things
And she'd be gone by noon

Well I'm gonna miss her
When I get home
But right now I'm on this lakeshore
And I'm sittin' in the sun
I'm sure it'll hit me
When I walk through that door tonight
That I'm gonna miss her
Oh, lookie there, I've got a bite

Now there's a chance that if I hurry
I could beg her to stay
But that water's right
And the weather's perfect
No tellin' what I might catch today

Well I'm gonna miss her
When I get home
But right now I'm on this lakeshore
And I'm sittin' in the sun
I'm sure it'll hit me
When I walk through that door tonight
That I'm gonna miss her
Oh, lookie there, I've got a bite

Yeah, I'm gonna miss her
Oh, lookie there, I've got a bite

Alright adults,,listen up !
We are all busy,,so maybe you can't go camping as much as you'd like. At least get up off your DUFF and go out, dig up some worms and take your children fishing !!!
Maybe you'll catch something,,maybe you won't,,but it's the idea ! You know, gett'n out with the kids, fresh air,,away from the house for a little while,,see a little nature. The kids won't care if they catch fish,,they'll love the idea of gett'n out with you !!! And if you do catch a fish,,,BONUS !!

It's really not that hard,,just get up,,, go dig up,,, and go up to the fish'n spot !

Be with your kids,,learn something together, if you don't know how to fish, learn together.

Brad Paisley! Our favorite!! Plan on taking the kids fishing this weekend while we are camping for Mother's Day.

Tygansmom,
I heard "Just Fishin" by Trace Adkins for the first time yesterday,,a very cool song, indeed :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

:hug::hug::hug::hug::hug:

Had a great day today. My only boy grandbaby (1 1/2 yrs old) , my son and his wife stopped by to see us. They have another boy in the oven. Due July.
I gotta stay around to see these guys grow up. Gotta teach them how to call a Gobbler in.

My son got this nice northern big mouth, behind our house. He was fishing a white jig in the awfuls, behind him. He caught and released 5 in that jungle. He said one around 6 pounds grabbed a frog right next to him. He said, "it scared the S**T outta me".

No way I can fly fish in there. I have to do it in our community pond.
