My HHI trip is 2 mos. away and need to start planning!:cool1: Is fishing allowed off of the pier? Does the resort rent fishing poles and sell bait? Do i need a fishing license as a resort guest? What type of fish swim in the marsh?

Yes you can fish off the pier at at the resort,I think you will have to walk all the way out for deeper water, my boys crabbed mostly, I do njot remeber about bait but plenty of stores close by. If possible it would be best to bring your own things not sure what they have there.

I just called the resort. They have fishing rods to rent for $5 per 24 hours and sell shrimp bait for $2/bag. Fishing licenses are provided for guests staying at the resort. The poles are not strong enough for fishing by the beach.

It's funny, only I fish, not my DH...

Are there seats to sit in when fishing at the end of the pier?

They might have wooden benches at the pier I can not remember but if they do they might be messy, I do know they have a roof over the pier at the end so casting might be a problem.

It was my experience that fishing at the end of the pier was purely a novelty. My daughter and I fished for about two days on our last trip and the only thing we caught were bug bites.

Oh now I'm bummed! Fishing only a novelty? This is our first trip to HHI, I thought for sure you could "really" fish...:guilty: Well I guess fishing won't be happening, I have to cast!!!:headache:

When we were there last June, we went out on a Dolphin tour and when we left we saw a family that must have walked through the marsh to a sandy area right by where all the boats come out. I would ask around when you get there because I bet there are other places to fish other then the pier with all the people who are crabbing.

Ok, I keep hearing about crabbing--No crabs here in Ontario, what does that mean exactly? Can you cook them up if you catch them?:confused3

I wouldn't fish off the DVC pier, but would suggest trying the inlet at the far end of the resort where boats have access to the marina area. There is a very small beach and rock protected shore there where you may have some luck. We've seen dolphin 'fishing' in that area many times and there is good opportunity at both high and low tide. The pier area is very shallow at low tide and mostly inhabited by bottm dwellers (like crabs).

You can also try fishing from the rocks on the small bay area near the arrival gate. You'll see a lot of small boats fishing in that area too.

The crabs can be cooked. I'd contact Gordon at the Mercantile for suggestions about their preparation. (Say "Hi" to him for me!)

Enjoy the fishing! :)

Yeahhhh Doc! I knew I should have just PM'd the most excellent source! Ok, one question though. If I fish in those other areas will I need to buy a fishing license?

i fished and crabbed on my last trip there last September - it was truly the highlight of my trip. we caught about 6 small fish (no idea what kind) and more than a dozen crab.

there are no benches, but the pier is covered.

if you are a serious fisher-person, then you may want to look into one of the tours. but i had a grand a time.

So you caught all your fish from the pier? Well, it's been a while since I've fished, since my DH doesn't like it. I'm serious enough that I want to catch " real" fish but not enough to purchase alot of equipment, etc. When you caught your crabs, did you cook them yourself? We are in a studio, so was wondering if the resort might have a crab pot and a Place to cook them?

...If I fish in those other areas will I need to buy a fishing license?

I think you'll need a license so I'd check with the resort about that (if you rent the equip from the resort I think the license is included). Both of the locations I mentioned are on resort property so they will know. The pier should be fine at high tide but is pretty shallow at low tide - the other spots are deep water areas regardless what the tide is doing.

We've seen both dolphin and manatee in the waters around the resort including in the marina area itself weaving in and out around the docks and boats.

Enjoy!

Here are a few photos from our fishing excursions from the resort. Click for a larger view.

The license is included with the rentals thru Disney's resort. So since those spots you mentioned are on resort property, I would be covered. Great pics!

we didnt cook any of the crab, we released them all. we had a 2 bedroom, so i guess we could have cooked them if we had wanted, but we had fun just releasing.

i dont have a license and just rented all the equipment and bait from the resort.

i would recommend taking a pair of gloves and pliers as we did not and found removal of the crabs from the basket was very challenging.

You'll find salt water trout, bass, whiting, flounder, mudfish, eels, stingrays, mullet, shark and most other standard salt water fish.

Of course, when I use to go fishing, all I ever caught was the anchor rope.

I wouldn't think fishing off the pier would be much fun. The rocks, as was pointed out earlier, would be good, or ask about an excursion on a boat. You can also fish off the beach.
