What size hook is best? We have only rented poles in the past and never paid much attention. Now the kids have their own poles and want to fish with those. Thanks!
1) Almost any small-to-medium size.
2) Those fish bite at darn near anything. (hint: they love corn or hot dogs)
3) I probably would avoid using the
. . . Shepard's hook
. . . appendage from Capt James Hook
. . . Nolan Ryan hook
. . . tow truck hook
Dumb question, so do the bass bite the hot dogs or strictly the bream? Need to be sure I bring the correct bait to catch the bass out there, and where I usually fish, the bream get to the bait before the bass if using worms, bread, etc.
If you want to catch bass use a proper lure. If you use bait use a circle hook. Most of the time circle hooks catch the fish in the corner of the mouth; so they don't swallow the hook and die.
We saw a guy last weekend catch a bait fish with a hot dog by the bike barn...took that fish still on his line over to the part of bay lake that runs behind the 300 loop and catch a huge bass.
Everytime we go my husband brings his fancy lures and the only thing that has ended up working was hot dogs

That makes me smile. Better'n somethin' for nothin'.
Ditto about the hot dogs. Just the way of things... You think they'd get tired and go for some variety.

1) Alas, I am not a fisherman.
2) I take my advice from others who fish our lakes and canals.
3) In fact, all I know first-hand about bass is
. . . it is a low voice or tone
. . . it is frothly with a good head when poured into a beer stein
. . . it only has four strings when played upright
