Fishing help!

Ok, my boss is leaving and he LOVES to fish...as a going away, I wanted to get him a fishing pole- and I'm clueless!!!! Help! I think I have it narrowed down to 2 brands, Zebco and Ugly Stik. How do I choose the reel? Or does it come with the pole? I need opinions. TIA

Also, how do I know what length to get? If it makes any difference he's about 5'10" and only fishes in freshwater.

IMO buying a fishing rod for someone is difficult. Are they hard-core, do they target specific species of fish, what kind of reel are they comfortable with, do they want to try another type.

Could you just get a gift cert instead & let them choose what they want?

No offense but serious fishermen won't use your run of the mill rods and reels. I'd get a gift card to a store that sells higher end equipment and let himchoose for thimself.

He's not a competitive fisherman or anything, just leisure fishing...mainly catfish. Is it really that big a deal to choose a rod and reel?

If you would ask my DH, he's say yes. I don't dare buy him anything that he hasn't already picked out himself. I would go with a gift certificate to a place like Bass Pro Shop.

Maybe consider a nice new Tackle Box? It is really hard to buy a rod and reel for someone else.
