Fishing at VWL?

Does anyone know if there is anywhere to fish from the bank at VWL? We will be there this fall, and my two teen sons want to spend the last part of our trip fishing. One night we have Artist Point booked and should be finished before sunset. The boys want to fish some when the sun is going down, but I don't want to have to leave the resort. (If there is nowhere to fish, I know we can go to Fort Wilderness, but how long is the boat ride there?)

you can go to FW - you can walk over or ride the bus.

there is not alot of water front at wl that is easy to get too. the marina area is too crowded (my opinion) with the dock and the boats. vwl does not have its own water front.

That's what I figured about VWL. But I thought you could ride a boat from VWL to Ft. Wilderness and that it would let you off by the area where Hoop de Doo and Trail's End are. I have no interest in taking a bus or driving because it takes so long to get to the back of the campground. But a boat ride would be a peaceful way to end the night and a convenient way to get there if I have to leave the resort. Can anyone confirm if there is a boat from VWL to FW? Also, if you walk, how long is the walk and where exactly in FW does the walkway lead?

Yes, there's boat service that runs between the Wilderness Lodge, Contemporary, and Fort Wilderness.

We just returned last week and had gone to Ft. Wilderness so that the kids could fish. You rent poles and get worms at the Bike Barn (near the middle of the campgrounds and can catch a bus that will drop you off near it).

We were very disappointed in the experience. The kids' poles were very cheap (plastic) and the fishing string kept getting all tangled up. Perhaps the ones for older kids will be better. The water where they fished was so shallow. I had expected a better stocked pond, I suppose. They got only 2.

We had done the fishing at Vero Beach, which was a little more expensive, but worth it. They got a nice fishing rod to keep and even "lessons" in casting, etc. If we ever drive, we might try fishing again, but definitely will bring better poles.

the walk is around 15 to 25 minutes depending upon how fast you walk.

that say FW has a bunch of animals - so you can definitely look around as you walk - just another way of seeing stuff.

We've been wanting to try this at FW when staying at VWL, but have never made the time. It sounds so cheap to do and I'm sure it's a ton of fun.

So, they don't have the "Cane" poles available for fishing any more?

Thanks for the info, but my teens will have their own poles. We have to drive 12 hours with about 6 rods/reels crammed in our car. They must have different rods/reels for different fishing. This way we don't have to worry about the cheap ones that can be rented. In fact, my kids rods/reels cost about $200 each! They wouldn't dream of using cheap plastic ones. I guess you can see why they will spend several days at WDW fishing! This is their passion! In fact, my DS16 just placed 8th in the state of Kentucky in the high school state championship.

So, they don't have the "Cane" poles available for fishing any more?

We even asked for cane poles and were told there were none there. They would have done a little better with them I am sure. It was still fun for them, 12, 9 and 5; however, the string getting tangled all the time was very frustrating.

Yes, they have done that before. They weren't impressed with the guide they had which turned them off from it. On our last trip, they just fished from the banks which they enjoyed. I will have to ask to see if they are interested in doing it again.
