Do any of ur children take fish oil? If so can you tell me what brand you buy. I would like to start my 4 year old son on them but he already gives me a problem taking the gummy vitamins so I would like to get the least fishy tasting ones.

I read that fish oil can improve behavior and other things. Has anyone experienced that with their children?

TIA

Talk to your doctor first. There are a lot of studies right now on the benefits of fish oil but you need to check with his dr as to the dosage and side effects.

It can alter digestive systems even in adults.

My son has ADD (not hyper) and supplements have made a huge difference in his ability to concentrate.

At his age he should be getting a higher ratio of EPA than DHA to make a difference. Nordic Naturals is a good brand.

My DD7 takes the Nordic Naturals Junior Omega 3 with Vitamin D capsules. They are lemon flavored and can be swallowed whole or chewed. But I'll warn you, DD bit into them once and decided she'd never do that again. She swallows them whole now.

DD has bipolar disorder with co-morbid ADHD. Her psychiatrist recommended the Omega 3 and Vitamin D supplements. Both have shown positive results with ADHD and mood disorders.

At what age do they need more DHA than EPA? My son is 7 (almost 8). Also, what about using the fish oil in addition to prescription medication? I'm definitely going to talk to his pediatrician about this. I'd love to not have to use meds or use less of it. (He's on a small dose of meds now.)

Thank you all for ur responses. I will look into the brand mentioned.

My son has not been tested for any behavioral issues but he has a tendency to go from happy/nice to just down right mad/mean very quickly.

He is a horrible eater, I will say that, so I am sure he is lacking on other nutrients that may contribute to his behavior or it could just be him. :confused3

With what I read about fish oil, I figured I would give it a try.

Talk to your DS's pediatrician about a vitamin D supplement as well. Vitamin D has shown a strong link to mood. It's a fat soluable vitamin so you have to be more careful about dosage than with water soluable vitamins. There are studies showing that a lot of us who live in northern climates (don't know where you live) have a D deficiency. A regular kid's multi-vitamin usually provides 400IU of D, and studies are now showing a much higher intake of D is safe and recommended.

We live in NJ. He drinks a ton of milk and bc of that he is anemic(blood test confirmed). (And also bc he eats like c**p) They say that milk can actually deplete your iron. Now weather that is true or not I am not sure..........just what I read.

Both of my sons have ADD and take fish oil. We have noticed a difference (especially when we forget to give them for a while)

A funny story. We called the fish oil their "brain food" since we weren't sure how they would react to taking fish oil. About 9-12 months have my DS then 5 was taking the fish oil, I was following him in the store and I noticed a fishy smell. A little later I noticed it again..I bent down and realized the smell was coming from his hair...He had broke open the pill and rubbed the oil on his head to get to his brains faster....:rotfl2:

On a side note - fish oil does not easily come out of hair...

:rotfl2: Very cute!!

DS takes fish oil for his ulcertative colitis. His gastroenterologist suggested that it wouldn't hurt and might offer some healing of the atrophy in his small intestine from the Celiac. I usually buy something that states loud and clear on the label that you won't have "fish burps" and "odorless". The one time I didn't I thought he and I were going to hurl from the awful "fish burps".:faint:

Barleans has a 'creamy' type with lots of different flavors, pinacolada, orange, lemon, etc. Many places have them...Drugstore.com, amazon.com, etc.

my dd used to take the orange chocolate flavored coromega omega 3 packets. She would have preferred chcolate only but liked it enough.
