Fish and Distilled Water ..?

I read on here that the chemicals in tap water can harm fish. So we bought a thing of distilled water. Before we put it in, I want to make sure its safe for them. I would hate it if they got sick because of the water we put in there. We have an algae eater thats two, I wanna make it to at least three.

Distilled water is fine. DH uses it alot when he needs to do a quick water change on his saltwater tank.

we were told not to do distilled water. So we did tap water and left it out over night in an open container.......it was supposedly fine then. Our betas lasted three and four years with exception of the one I cooked by accident...Poor Mr. Feeney

I use plain tap water for my betta at work and my koi in my backyard pond. I do use a water conditioner though. I have never had a problem or lost a fish.

DO NOT use distilled water! It's hypotonic and will pull electrolytes out of the fish, which is deadly. You can use it with salt water tanks because the salt added balances out the tonicity of the water. Insead, use tap water that has been sitting out ovenight and/or use the water treatment made specifically for fish.

We used tap water in our aquarium. But we did add some sort of water conditioner. I want to say it was called "stress coat." yup, just googled it...it's stress coat.

We were told to use Spring Water if we used bottled water, that the distilled water was "too pure."

Of course, ours are only goldfish, which I had to go out and buy a new 20 gal. tank for. DS has had them since Kindergarten (now in 6th grade). There are 4 extremely large goldfish in the tank. The largest is over 6" from nose to the end of his tail.

They are the proof that they thrive from neglect.

Thanks to everyone who posted to my DD's question. I have several containers with tap water sitting on the counter overnight. We knew the people on the boards would come through with great advise.
