My family is limited to taking Disney trips during school vacations, but we're helping friends plan an extended family trip in early May. Anyone go this time of year and can let me know about crowd levels, things to avoid, or benefits of the first of May? She's come to us as Disney experts, but want to know specifics about that time of year.

Usually an ideal time to go. Park crowds are heavy but not overwhelming like they can get when one must follow school schedules to visit WDW. Weather is usually very good, mid to high 80s in day, mid 60s at night, and without the extreme high humidity you get in the summer which begins in latter part of May. Can have one or more daily showers but less so than summer although still a risk that Fantasmic or a parade could be canceled. Main event is Flower and Garden at Epcot, which is much more subdued than Food & Wine in Fall. Stars Wars weekends don't begin until mid-May.

The only downside, which I cannot remember even having seen in a few years, is the invasion of love bugs, flying insects which come out for periods in May and September with only one objective for the brief period they are here, which objective may cause you to have to explain the birds and the bees to your children. They are harmless to people but when they are noticeable, they are out in huge swarms that you can see everywhere. Their biggest risk of harm is to cars as they commit suicide by flying right into them and if the secretions are left on the car for long periods of time they may potentially be harmful to the paint job. How plentiful they are can vary year to year and as I noted above I cannot even recall seeing them in the last few years.

We have been two years in a row the first week of May and loved it! Epcot Flower and garden festival is still happening and is beautiful! Weather is mild...little to no rain, temps range from 75-85. Not a ton of humidity. Those bugs the other person mentioned are everywhere, and a little annoying. But they don't bite or sting. They are just everywhere. Crowd level
Is good, much better than spring break or late May! I highly recommend this week....college and public schools are still in!
