OK-this will be the first trip to Disny for myself and my family. I have a 6yr old and a 2 yr old--both boys. They will be 7 and 3 when we go.
My dad gave us a trip for Christmas. It consists of 5 nights at The Caribbean Beach Resort with Ultimate Park Hopper Tickets. We figure 5 nights would give us 4 days of time at the parks. We plan on 2 days at WDW-1 day at Animal Kingdon-1 day at either EPCOT or MGM. We are going to stay an additional day at another hotel in order to get 1 more day of fun and plan on going to one of the water parks. We will be there at the end of July/first of August. My question is which is cheaper to purchase tickets to? We will use the Park Hopper for the most expensive parks and purchase our own tickets for the cheapest one.
We are so overwhelmed about all the choices and things to do I though I would try this to see if someone could lend a hand and offer suggestions on how to make this trip fun for all of us.
We have already decided that one of us would be taking the little one back to the hotel for nap time while the other gets to stay with the oldest.
What about eating? We will not be doing any big fancy meals and would rather save money on meals for doing fun things--are meals/food prices too expensive? Probably will only be eating breakfasts (in the hotel room--cereal-fruit-pastries)-snacks for lunch at the park-and dinner at the parks(burgers/sandwhiches for the most part)-maybe one nice meal at one of the parks.
Would it be better to go to WDW one day then another park the next and hit WDW on another day to break it up? Which water park would work best for kids the ages of mine. Both are fearless and the little one does everything the oldest does. Do they allow floaties or arm floats for little kids (the oldest swims like a fish-the youngest tries, but not as good).
Thanks in advance for all the help and suggestions. Replies can either be posted here or sent to my e-mail!
Mike

First of all if your Father already purchased Unlimited park hoppers for the duration of your stay, you have access to all the parks including water parks from park opening on your check in day until park closing on your check out day. So even if you check out and go to another hotel you can still use Disney parks that day. That is six days on a 5 night stay.

The water parks offer vests for the little ones.

Bringing water/snacks into the parks is a good idea especially for the little ones. Mine loved her fruit snacks while waiting in line.

We usually eat at counter service with maybe one sitdown/character meal per visit. This way we're not scrambling to make it to PS times every day. Again, with small kids this can get to be too much. You're on the right track there.

Your itinerary would depend on the time of year you're going. But going back to the resort for a rest/swim is always a good idea.

I would think with kids your age, you'd need two days in the Magic Kingdom and one full day in the rest of the parks. You will have a great time no matter what, but researching here before you go will make you a pro! :)

Oops just read when you're going. The parks are open late in the summer. I'd hit the parks at opening and go back for a rest/swim each day around noon. Then go back after 5-6pm. Resting in WDW is important because it's exhausting!! Lots of walking and in the heat you'll really feel it.
:)

we have thought about the nap/rest thing. Also thought about trying to be in cooler areas during the hottest parts of the day--water rides-indoor shows-etc.

what are PS times? How expensive are counter meals? We want to have our days planned early, but find that trying to stick to a schedule could be havoc.

First off WDW is the whole property not the name of the park. I Believe you were referring to Magic Kingdom. All 4 theme parks are the same price. There are no more Park Hoppers unless they were purchased all ready if not they are called Magic Your Way (MYW). You can go to allearsnet.com to find all the resturants and there offerinsg and prices. PS is Priority Seating which You need in July/Aug for sit down meals or Character meals and to be made 90 days out and no sooner. Passporter is a book i recommend you get as well has lots of info and great fot keeping records or reciepts because of all its pockets in the back. You found a great place for asking questions.

PS is priority seating. Sort of like a reservation but means you will get the next available table for your party, not that you'll be seated at the exact PS time. They are usually pretty good about getting you sat close to your PS time.

Go here for menus & prices- http://allearsnet.com/menu/menus.htm

Yes all the ticket options have changed. If your Dad hasn't actually purchased the package yet, make sure to read up on the changes. :)

I agree with the above posters/ Go to www.allearsnet.com and go to their dining section. Once there you can check out the menus of every single counter service in WDW (all 4 theme parks) plus Caribbean Beach Resort. All menus have prices and I find them very helpful when I am planning my trips. Not to mention that you will get to see what is offered at each counter service and it can help you decide where you want to eat and you won't waste that time wandering around looking at food selections. I would also HIGHLY recommend calling 1-407-w-disney or going on their website: www.waltdisneyworld.com and ordering a FREE vacation planning video. It will take about 5 to 6 weeks to get to your house so order now. Also, go out to your local Disney store and buy a Walt Disney World Guide Book. The book breaks down every park and also all of the water parks, Downtown Disney, Resorts etc. and you can read the descriptions of the rides and discuss them with your children so you will have an idea of what they can and cannot ride :flower1:

I tried to post earlier and got bumped off.
1. Get the Unofficial Guide and use this site to your full advantage!
2. Your UPH tickets if already purchased can be used starting the day you arive at the resort and are good through the day you leave and are good for all the Walt Disney Parks.
3. You can plan a really fun trip, have a loose schedule, and make good meal choices for your family at a reasonable cost. :)

We have had APs in the past and I will give you a run down of how we do things to give you an idea.
We normally check into our resort around 3-4pm and after getting situated in our room head to a park. Our kids love Epcot, and we find this park easy to walk and visit in the evening. In July/Aug you will have daylight hours until 8-9pm. We enjoy touring Future World in Epcot, riding Spaceship earth, touring The Land, Imagination (we avoid Honey I Shrunk the Audience), and Ice Station Cool. We then head to Mexico in the World Showcase and get a counter service meal. Two of my children easily share a meal and we just buy an extra drink. We then often get a couple of dessert items in Norway that we split between all of us and the kids play on the boat. We also ride the rides offered in Mexico and Norway. Depending on what is going on Epcot we may tour some of the countries. If the kids are up for it we find a place to watch Illuminations (in which our youngest often falls asleep) and then head back to the hotel.
The next day we pick what I refer to as an "easy" park. Consistently we have gone to Animal Kingdom our first full day. If it open at 8, and you are there in the summer, I highly recommend being there for the opening. The opening is really nice and not to be missed for one! After the opening we head left towards Africa. We walk right onto the Safari with hardly any wait! After the Safari we tour the trails and do Conservation Station. After Cons. Station we go to Tusker House to purchase the "meal deal" they have. I highly recommend it. It will provide you with a bottled drink, a snack, and a full counter service meal with drink for a very reasonable price. We like Africa, and my kids play with the band, get face paintings, eat snacks. We then usually head to China to explore the River Rapids and the Jungle Trek. They also have a bird show call Flights of Wonder which we have missed every trip due to some problem (rain, sick animal, etc) After China, we eat Lunch -- we like Tusker House back in Africa because you can get a nice peice of Salmon, rice with steamed veggies there, but there are several other places to check out with really great food (Flame Tree BBQ is one). After a nice lunch we normally head back to the front of the park and catch the shows. Its a nice break and the areas are either cool or shaded. We see the Lion King first and walk right out into Pocahontas. If your kids are into a Bugs Life, you may want to Fast Pass that before going into the Lion King. After Camp Mickey and Minnie, we tour around the Tree of Life and then head to Dinoland where we often sit and hang out while our kids eat ice cream. Some of the things our children can't do because of height restrictions in Dinoland. Tarzan Rocks is also a great show to see. By mid afternoon we then head back to our hotel for some R&R. After a good rest, we then head back to Epcot just because our kids love it and ride Spaceship Earth more times than I personally want too! We will normally tour Wonders of Life if its open, Universe of Energy, and most the time my kids want to go back to the Land. FW closes at 7, so we normally head back to our hotel to swim. (we may only spend 2 hrs at Epcot)

The second full day we have we go to MGM. Our kids in 2003 were too small for the thrill rides so we slept in arriving about 30min before the shows began. We normally head to Playhouse Disney first, and then check the wait on Little Mermaid. We will Fast Pass Mermaid, and then go tour or ride something else. We enjoyed the Great Movie Ride and after a bathroom break and snack, it was time to see the Little Mermaid. After Mermaid we watch Beauty and the Beast and then determine what kind of meal we would like. We have eaten at Prime Time (good), Brown Derby (excellent but IMO not kid friendly), ABC commisary (good counter service) and a buffet style place that escapes me (it was plain gross). After lunch we normally just wing it and see Muppets. Our children were not as into this park and so we normally were gone by 2-3pm and back to our hotel for some R&R. Depending on weather and crowd levels we plan to see Fantasmic at MGM that evening (which you need to be there plenty in advance)
Our Third full day we go to Magic Kingdom. The first time we went it was late fall and we bascially did "Do Disney and Die". Most people to this day are shocked at how many rides our family rode in one day!I think the key is to read about what rides your children can ride and what they will like to ride and do the ones that historically have the longest wait time. Our kids were younger in 2003 (and shorter) so we often opened up MK and headed to Fantasyland, jumping on Dumbo first, then we woud do Pooh, Snow White, and then walk over to do Peter Pan, Small World and then we ate snacks and did bathroom breaks or stood in line for the Mickey Philharmagic. After this we would head to Frontier Land where we would see where the line was on Haunted Mansion. This my favorite ride and I can usually gauge how fast its loading despite what the sign says. We will normally ride this next and tour Frontier Land. My husband and children do the Riverboat, I do not, so I relax and just enjoy the atmosphere. Traditionally we get lunch in Frontier Land -- Hot Dogs, which my children think are the best! On days we've have been at MK and its been crowded and hot we often leave after we get our Hot Dogs. We head to the hotel to rest, swim and play. Around 5-6pm we will go back to MK and usually have no problem touring, visiting characters and riding rides we didn't get a chance to ride earlier that day plus watch the Parade and Wishes (if it shows that night)
Our Fourth full day we go normally go to MK again. This time we try to get in some attractions at Tomorrow Land, play in Toontown, and hear a story from Belle at the Castle. We often eat counter service and then hop to Epcot to do all the Kidcot Family Fun Stations in Future World which my children really enjoy -- once it was blistering hot and we decided to go to DTD instead, shop and let our kids play in the water outside the toy store there and we then ate our evening meal at Rainforest Cafe.
Our fifth full day at WDW we sometimes skip a park all together in the morning. We normally head to DTD or to do something else Disney related. IF this is our last day, we will go to MK that night and let our kids buy some souveniers and just take things easy.

I am a planner. I try to have some loose ideas of what we are going to do each day and what my children can ride and what they want to ride.
Each trip we try to do a character meal. Some are more expensive than others but worth doing while you are there. Since you thought you were going to have to pay for tickets on this trip to a couple of parks I assume you had an idea about the money you were taking. Now that you know, you don't have to pay for any tickets you may want to consider doing a Character Meal and maybe another sit down type meal. We often try to eat our sit down meal at lunch because it is less expensive. One meal we always enjoy is Rainforest Cafe and I think it is reasonable to eat there and I believe the price is the same for lunch and dinner.

I know this is really long! LOL

You can find the menus to a lot of them at allearsnet.com.

PS means priority seating and its for sit down meals.

Welcome to the DIS! I definately agree with you on taking a break in the middle of the day. We went the first week of August 2004 and it was miserably hot during the day. All of you might benefit from a break, not just the little one! Also, if you're on a budget for meals and such, check out the budget board here. Those folks are pros when it comes to stretching your dining dollars! We sometimes buy the meal vouchers for our trips. You usually break even with them unless the two kids can share meals, but we get them to have some of our meals paid for in advance. As far as character meals go, breakfast is the cheapest, and if you get to the parks early, do the popular rides first, then get a late ps for a character breakfast, it provides a break and also turns into "brunch" that can hold you over until dinner if that makes sense! Keep posting and asking questions, there's lots of friendly people here that love to help other's plan their trips!
