In July we will be staying for the first time at the villas at the wilderness lodge. What are the special things about this resort that i don't need to miss. This is the resort i really want to stay at. I'm a history buff so this resort will be great for me.

Ask the concierge about tours of the resort. They run them several times a day. I was just there and we were able to go up to the roof to take some photos with Ranger Don.

WL is my favorite resort. The lobby is beautiful with the fireplace, the carved animals, the lights shades, the Disney character totem, and the pool with the bridge going over it. The pathways outside and the geyser are beautiful. The topiaries. Liked the boat going to the MK. Go exploring there are little nooks on each level overlooking the lobby.

Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Music between the entry doors.

"Hidden" cozy fireplaces.

The monorail platform that was never developed.

The antics at Whispering Canyon.

The Railroad Room.

I think tours are on select mornings. I took the tour in August. We didn't go up to the roof, but we learned a lot about the history and theme of the Lodge. We also walked over to WLV to see the train related details which were interesting!

Just came back from WL last night. Had a great time. Rooms are just OK, but the resort is wonderful. The grounds and pool with slide are beautiful. Boat to MK is so convenient. There is a little sandy beach (no swimming) and bike rentals. Bussing was fast, let me know if you have any specific questions.

I assume there is a decent walkway to Fort Wilderness. My 3 year old son would love riding a pony and feeding the animals. Animals and trains are his favorite things.

No it's a totally different resort. The way you get to Fort Wilderness from the Wilderness Lodge is to take the boat.

You can take the boat to FW (it may stop at the CR in between depending upon time of day) or you can walk on a trail to FW. Ask for the map at the front desk and they'll show you where the trail to FW is.

We looked into renting bikes at WL and the cast member told me the walking/jogging trail connects to FW campground. (You cannot ride bikes on the path.) He said it would take about 10 min.

I can't see the monorail platform and I've stayed at WL several times. Anyone else see it in the link to the photo??

Between the drive-up canopy and the covered entry door there's an elevated platform (it's hard to see elevation) that is a slightly lighter shade of green in the picture. Look for the darker railing and old-fashioned street lamps along the railing in parallel with the drive. It looks like it could accommodate a single rail line as it is not very wide and is obscured a bit by roof lines that are above the platform.

When you walk out onto this area it feels like an unfinished room that people have simply forgotten about. It is purely my speculation that this could have been for "rail" transportation other than "monorail".
