If you’re staying in Waikiki, definitely go to the original Leonard’s on Kapahulu. There’s always a line but it goes quickly. They are the best. The Leonard’s trucks are good, but not always the same quality.
- Leonard's Malasadas. Try to get to the original Honolulu location, they have more flavors than the truck
- Foodland for your groceries, deli, hot and cold food bar. This is possibly the most local Hawaiian food you can get.
- …
- Matsumoto's or Kaimana for shave ice. Matsumoto's is the classic but a lot of people like Kaimana better.
An option to Foodland is Don Quixote’s near the Ala Moana mall. Foodland is mainly a local market. Don Quixote’s is bigger, has a greater selection, and has a large selection of local gift items (Mac nuts, local beef jerky, dried fruit, etc.). Plus a really large deli area with local plate lunches, a large sushi bar, and tons of other stuff.
Also in Waikiki, search out Waiola Shave Ice - there are a couple of locations. At its best, Matsumoto’s is about the same as Waiola. But Matsumoto’s can be hit or miss. I’ve never had a bad shave ice at Waiola’s. (I’ve had probably over 200 of them there).
