OK, I'm writing my first trip report. I have really enjoyed reading about everybody's vacation, so I am going to give it a try.
Cast of Characters:
Me - Mom - 39 - chief worrier, planner, director, packer, organizer, etc. etc. etc.
DH - Dad - 44 - along for the ride
DD1 - Tink - 21 - will be senior in college next year but a kid at heart
DD2 - Bug - 10 - easy going tomboy
Trip begins at 8:30 am in SC with an 8-hour car ride to WDW. Oh joy! You have to understand I hate to travel, I have this thing called panic attacks and get a LITTLE antsy on the interstate. Well, 1 xanax down and we all pile in. OK, do we have everything? Did we leave the house sitter a note about the fish? Were all the cats outside when we left? You get the picture. I'm a little stressed. We settle in for the trip and the girls are doing great in the backseat. No "she's touching me" or "she's on my side of the seat" conversations are going on. Ok, ok, maybe this car ride will be OK. My DH has put the CB radio in the car for the trip so "I" can keep an ear on traffic. Need to know if things start backing up anywhere. I MUST get off! Traffic moving, kids are getting along, I'm feeling fine. WDW here we come.
Side note my DD's worked on their autograph books for quite a while riding down in the car. Saw the idea on the Budget Board about printing out pictures of the characters, cutting them out and pasting them on 4 x 6 cards and putting them in a photo album. We found some Disney albums in Wal-Mart and the girls had a great time cutting and pasting on the way down. The characters thought they were real cool and now the girls can put their picture with the character across from their signature in their album. This worked great! Another wonderful idea from the DIS.
Well about 7 hours into the trip and several xanax later, I-4 begins to get very crowded. I really don't like to get bumper-to-bumper going 65 miles an hour. I check out the handy dandy CB to find out there is a problem ahead. Some type of accident and traffic is stopped. Ok, that's my queue to leave I-4 and detour through downtown Orlando. DH is less than thrilled with detour but oh well after 15 years of marriage he knows if I can avoid sitting in a traffic jam I will. Break out Florida map, and try to find alternate route to WDW. Do fairly well, only get lost once but see a fire station and they are more than happy to give directions.
Finally see "mouse" signs and we are there. Pull up to attendant and let them know we are Fort Wilderness bound. Waved on through. I am really getting excited now. This is great. Almost there. Check-in at Fort Wilderness is a breeze. Got all my requests, non-smoking cabin close to quiet pool. DH gets ready to drive car to cabin, and the girls and me hop in golf cart that I had reserved from Golf Enterprises. We all hop in, I mash gas and nothing happens. OK, how hard can this be? Check ignition, everything's on. Mash gas. Nothing. How do you back this thing up anyway? Send Tink to chase down DH with car so we won't be left stranded at check-in. DH gets there and says "do you have it in gear"? What? Gear? Oh, that's what that switch is under my legs. Let's see R for reverse. Move lever, mash gas and cart lurches backwards. WOW, so that's what you do. Family is now ready to proceed to cabin and begin WDW vacation. The breeze is blowing through my hair, I-4 and 95 are far behind me, and 9 days of Disney is in front of me. What a life!
Check in next time as we find the family at the Hoop Do De review and Tink has her "moment in the spotlight".
