Just a few days off our first ever cruise. The wonderful Disney Magic was our home for 7 days.

I never planned to write a trip report but I enjoyed reading others before I went. I think my perspective may be a little different than others due to some, ahem mobility issues I wound up with. I tend to be wordy so I apologize if it is too long. I want to include details.

Who we are: myself, SO and DD (11), Bella. SO booked this cruise back in August as a 50th birthday gift to me. I don't know how I happened upon the DIS boards but once I did I have never been off :goodvibes. I learned so much here that was useful and wound up making new friends.

I will give a little pre-cruise history as it all pertains.

I joined our meet thread. I ended up signing DD up to be penpals with a couple of girls so they could email prior to our trip. This ended up being the best thing and I highly recommend it to other older kids. We monitor DD's email closely so we knew it was safe.

One of the girls DD was corresponding with lives just 3 hours from us so over school vacation week in Feb we decided to meet for lunch. We met halfway. It was a funny feeling waiting in the restaurant as we were meeting total strangers. In walk Taylor and her mom, Julie. They would be cruising with Julie's parents. It would be the second cruise for all of them. Well we ended up being there for hours and the waitress was blown away when we eventually told her we had never met before. We loved meeting them, Bella and Taylor hit it off right away and we enjoyed Julie as well.

Two weeks later in snowy Boston I fall down our front steps and shatter the bones in my lower leg. I have surgery that night and have 2 plates and 15 screws put in my leg. SO tells the orthopedic surgeon we are going on a cruise in 7 weeks and he gets a weird look on his face (like "I'm not so sure about that"). Honestly one of the first thoughts I have is that I wish we hadn't met Julie and Taylor because now it would be worse to postpone the trip as we were looking forward to getting to know them.

SO decides right away that we are going on the cruise anyway because now more than ever we need a vacation and we will make it work. We DID have trip insurance so postponing was a viable option.

A few weeks after surgery I email Julie and tell her of my accident. She emailed back and tells me that she and her parents had reservations at Palo on the thursday night of our trip and that they would like to invite us to join them.
(Yes, they are the nicest people, but we got that vibe when we had lunch). We accepted but when Julie calls Disney they could not add us to the reservation. We can try to do it when we board. Somehow with this phone call our reservations wound up linked.

Cruise time arrives and I am on crutches, partial weight bearing, and we have purchased a lightweight travel wheelchair. Travel w/c means it only has small wheels which means I can't push it myself. I wasn't thrilled with this because it took my independence away. But we really wanted light and portable. Last visit before the trip I see the doctor, we remind him of the trip and he says "have fun". Phew!

We flew in Thursday night, rented a car at airport and stayed in Orlando near Universal. DD was dying to go to WWoHP so we did that on friday. I was really nervous about crowds there as it was school vacation time and that is always crowded from what I read. Well it was crowded but not nearly as bad as I had feared. We waited no more than 45 mins for the rides, and way less when we went to the other areas away from WWoHP.
DD enjoyed it, they did a good job making it look and feel like Harry Potter. Butterbear was good, DD got the Pygmie Puff she had been talking about.

NEXT UP: Arrival at Port

OUR DAY ARRIVES

We wake up in Orlando, have a quick breakfast and head to the port. Actually nothing is quick anymore with me moving on crutches and loading all our stuff into a small rental car. Since there was one less person to pull luggage and one more "thing needing to be pushed" (me) we had to downsize luggage. SO was NOT happy when we ended up needing a small suitcase just for FE stuff.
I was "making buttons" as my mom used to say worrying about getting us to the port early. I'm not exactly sure why. Were they really going to turn us away from Parrot Cay for lunch? I think it is just in my obsessive personality to want to be there early and not MISS ANYTHING.

We arrive at the port at about 10:30 which is exactly when we signed up to arrive but later than I wanted to arrive;). We drop off luggage, me, DD, wheelchair, crutches... and SO goes to return rental car at Budget. I was worried about this part. 11 yo DD, Bella, pushing me through confusing port, up to second floor, check in etc. No need to have worried. We were directed to elevators, went through security and got in line without any trouble (and without DD whacking anyone's heels with w/c). We are in line and who do I see ahead of us? Taylor is smiling and looking at us. Yay!

We get to check in and and we get boarding number 4. Yay again! We go and sit down on the end so we can watch for SO to get back. Now we get to meet Julie's parents, Tom and Sandy, for the first time. Tom asks to see my KTTW card and announces that we are seated at the same table. Since our reservations got linked we got put at the same table. WooHoo. We are all happy about that.
Let me jump ahead for a moment and talk about dining and seating. I had read many posts about being seated with strangers and I was a bit nervous about this. Of course I wanted to sit with people we could talk to and share with and get to know but suppose we ended up with people we were not comfortable with. As the week went on I looked around at the tables in each of our restaurants and I saw many tables with large families all together. I also saw clumps of tables where they were separate but very, very close to each other. Our servers actually had 3 such tables in addition to ours. They each had families of 3 or 4 but were technically separate. I wondered if DCL was doing more of that rather than putting strangers together. For us it worked out perfectly the way it ended up. Bella and Taylor sat next to each other happily each night. Often they were off "in their own world" while the rest of us had adult conversation. I have no doubt that Bella had a much better time with this arrangement than had she been just with us each night. I enjoyed it more too.

Back to the port, Julie asks if I want to go to Palo as soon as we board and try to get added to their reservation. I tell her my hesitation is that I have been reading and I think that thursday night is semi-formal and the night they serve lobster tails which I really don't want to miss. Julie tells her parents at which time Tom says he didn't realize they would be missing that night and tells her to cancel Palo. Sorry Julie :confused3

I wait and wait for SO, Maureen, to come back as I realize we have been there a long time without her. I text her and she has returned the car without problem but is standing with a mass of people waiting for a shuttle to take them to port. Near us is a LONG line. I say, oh no Maureen is now going to have to wait in that long line to get her picture taken but no, Julie assures me that is not the line for check in. That is the line to see Mickey!! Silly me! Lost my head there for a second. Forgot where I was! Maureen eventually makes it and we wait a bit longer.

It was crowded by the time they start to call boarding numbers and of course when they start boarding it seems like the mass of people all moves in closer so it feels more like a crush. I must say I have learned that I really don't like crowds from the perspective of sitting in a wheelchair. I don't like being lower, I don't like getting bumped, having a sore leg will do that, I don't like feeling less in control. For the most part people were considerate. Most would step aside and let us go; some don't even see the wheelchair so they just do their thing. Next thing I knew we were going through the Mickey ears.

I must say for me it was fun to see things in person after looking pictures and reading about it on the DIS boards for so many months. Seeing the ship, going through the Mickey ears, seeing the lobby for the first time. It was all a thrill. Having our name announced was different than I had expected. I don't know why but I pictured everyone stands around and listens to all the names being called. In reality there were 3 or 4 CMs welcoming families and announcing their names at the same time and really no one is paying attention to YOUR announcement because they are too busy doing their own thing. This isn't bad, just different than my head had it.

We went to guest services to get tickets for Tea with Alice. I wasn't sure I wanted to do this based on some of what I had read here, thought DD might be too old, but Julie and Taylor were going to do it so of course DD wanted to. We got tickets for all of us to go monday afternoon. We head off to Parrot Cay and Julie and Taylor head off to Topsiders and to swim.
DD was a total grump at this meal and she never would say why but I think it was because Taylor was going swimming and we weren't. Lunch at Parrot Cay was everything I had thought it would be. I remember lots of nice prawns, salad and the strawberry soup. Now strawberry soup is not something I would have even considered before but I remember reading someone's trip report (podsnel maybe?) and they raved about the strawberry soup. OMG it was soooooooo good!!!!! I want to try to find the recipe for that. There was meat being carved and hot dishes that I had every intention of going back for but I got full from what I had, dang!

Before I knew it we could go to our rooms. We were in 1036. I have no complaint with this location. It was quiet, easy to get to; great for days in port. Maureen had chosen this as we were worried about ME suffering from motion sickness. In the end Maureen didn't like the location of our room because when she looked out the portholes (two smaller ones) she didn't like being so close to the water. She felt better being a bit higher up and looking down at the water.
We were not expecting oiur luggage until late afternoon but within minutes of being in our room we hear a noise and look out to see our luggage has been dropped at our door!!! Nice surprise; unpacking is done very quicky. We also meet Jonathon from the Philippinnes who is our stateroom host. He is very sweet. All week he is readily available and always helpful. We tell him we are planning to go to the health center to see if they have a bath chair I can use as I can't stand in the shower and he says he will look for one. By the end of the day he knocks on the door with a bath seat.

At 3:00 we meet in the Promenade Lounge to meet others from our DIS meets boards and to get any last minute changes to the FE list. Only about half the people showed up which is too bad because otherwise we never did get another opportunity to meet. For all I know I ended up sitting next to, or talking to, other DISers at times during the trip but never knew it. It was fun to meet the people we did meet and Taylor and Bella got to meet Maggie, the other girl they had been emailing.

4:00 was the muster drill, uneventful, boring actually, but over fast. Then up to the sail away party. Maureen and I went up to Deck 10. We figured it would be less crowded there so we looked down on Deck 9. Bella was with Talyor dancing on the pool on deck 9 and having a blast! (This would be an ongoing theme, Bella with Taylor having a blast). My impression from the party was awe at how much energy the CMs have. They danced and danced and danced with smiles on their faces the whole time. Lots and lots of positive energy. Micheal from Australia was just great leading it all.

So what was interesting toward the end of the sail away was they make a big deal and do the count down from 10 and then nothing happens. Being my first cruise I thought that was interesting. I would have thought we would have begun moving, or heard the ships horn, or something after that countdown. But no, nothing. Another 15 minutes or so goes by and we are still sitting quietly in port. Maureen then points out the window and we see a CM literally running pushing some luggage to the ship. Julie and her parents saw a DCL bus drive up and unload some people who RAN to the ship. So apparently if DCL is transporting you the ship WILL wait for you. Finally the ship's horn blows and we leave the port. I LOVED seeing the people waving to us as we pulled off. Maureen and I went a bit more forward on deck 10 and just watched the sea as we sailed off. I didn't know we were right near the horn and when that thing blew again I jumped 2 feet into the air off that bloody travel wheelchair!!!! Cripes that thing is loud if you are sitting right under it!!!!

In the theater that night was Welcome Aboard Show. We met Peter, the CD, I enjoyed seeing him every night and hearing his voice. He was so welcoming. I enjoyed the show. I felt so happy to finally be having MY turn on the ship. I loved feeling the movement of the ship as we watched the show. The first night was Freddy Fusion and we thought he was hysterical. We really enjoyed him alot. He was great for family entertainment. We saw him again later in the week and were lessed impressed, more on that later.

Our dinner the first night was in Parrot Cay. Our servers for the week were Adi from India and Laura from England. We loved them. They were happy, friendly and very good at their job. I think that was the night I had asparagus soup and loved it. I am not so much into soup, but those two, strawberry and then asparagus, were really good. I think I had sirloin for dinner which was just okay. Ice cream sundae for dessert. Loved that.
I don't remember what we did that night but probably not much as we were beat!

Next up: Key West

Yippie a Western report! Can't wait to read all about the rest of your trip!

Great TR!
Happy to see your TR and can't wait to see of your experience with Captain Marvin's and in doing Cozumel on your own, especially coming from the perspective of girls only. My DD and I cruise the Western this Saturday, doing Captain Marvin's and Chankanaab on my own, so your perspective is right on time! :thumbsup2

Glad some people are enjoying it. I have never written something like this before so I wasn't sure...

Audria in case I don't get to write about Grand Cayman and Cozumel days before you board I wanted to let you know we did Captain Marvin's on our own and had the BEST experience. I can't say enough about them. Go and have fun; really no need to worry.

We did Cozumel with DCL as we were less brave to venture out on our own there with me in a wheelchair. But that wasn't great so I don't know what to tell you there.

Have a GREAT trip!!!!!

You are doing a great job with the report so far. Keep it up, I can't wait to read the rest of it.

Enjoying you trip report so far. Cant wait to hear more!!

SUNDAY KEY WEST

We didn't set our alarms today as we couldn't go ashore in Key West until noon. Woke up to beautiful sunny skies. We decided to have brunch in Lumiere's.
I want to go off track a moment and talk about Palo. I had read lots and felt that I would like to try brunch in Palo. Since it was our first cruise we didn't get a stab at reservations until last, after everyone else. (I have forgotten specifics, was it 75 days before?). Anyway on our assigned day I tried to get brunch at Palo. The only option available was on sunday morning, Day 2. Not knowing what I was doing I turned that down. I knew we wanted to go into Key West. What I didn't know was that we wouldn't be off the ship in Key West until noon anyhow; we easily could have had brunch at Palo and still been done by noon. Rats!

Brunch at Lumiere's was really just mediocre. I'm sure it is often better, we just caught it wrong I think.
I started with large crab claws, Jonah I think they are called. According to the menu they are pre-cracked. Well they are but it is more like "pre-dented". You still need a cracker and lots of elbow grease to get the meat out. That was okay but I wish I had known. I also had Eggs benedict. My compaint with that was that it arrived cold. Maureen's breakfast, which I have forgotten what she ordered, also arrived cold. She was really disappointed. Bella got Mickey waffles and bacon. Who knows if hers arrived cold. Whats not to like about Mickey waffles and bacon when you are a kid.

We got off the ship right around noon in Key West. We had not planned any excursions in KW; and hadn't been planning any prior to leg fracture. We wanted to explore Key West and per my extensive research of these boards we planned on buying tickets to the trolley once we got off the ship. As others have said it was easy to find the kiosk selling tickets, it is cheaper than offered through DCL excursion, and 11 yo is free if you buy on your own. We asked about managing with crutches and folding wheelchair and they said no problem.

In reality managing with crutches and folding wheelchair on and off the trolley was difficult. I had to get up 3 steps onto the trolley, at least one of which was a high "bus" step. No one helped and I had a lot of trouble. Maureen lugged the wheelchair up the steps and onto the trolley. Our plan had been to get off the trolley at stops where we wanted and then get back on. Once I got on the first time we realized that on and off really wasn't feasible for us. We quickly made the decision to stay on and enjoy the ride and narration. I have to say this made me grumpy. I had wanted to get off at southernmost point and I wanted to go to Heminway's house and see the cats. The trolley is an "open air" vehicle. It was really hot that day, people were crammed in, the trolley was always full, and I was disappointed that we weren't getting on and off. I kind of got more crabby as the time went on. Positives of the trolley are the narration. I learned much more about Key West than I ever would have known had we walked about on our own.

We got off the trolley at second to last stop, on Duvall Street, so we could check out some shops. Maureen and Bella went in several shops, I went in a couple. By mid afternoon I was hot, grumpy and not in a shopping mood. The other thing I really wanted in Key West was Key Lime Pie on a stick that I had read about on DIS boards. We were able to get that and it did not disappoint. It was great. Another thing that would not had been on my radar if I had not read the DIS boards! I remember that I couldn't wait to get back on the ship. The thread that ended up continuing for most of the ports for me was that I was much more limited in port than on the ship. I think a combination of the fact that the ship was pretty easy for me to navigate, one way or another, and the fact that the ship was full of CMs who were always jumping to help if they saw I needed any help. When in port it was always harder.

We went back to the ship around 3:30. We were starving and went up to deck 9 for food. It was our first time checking out all the food up there. The nice thing about deck 9 food, other than that it is pretty much always available, is that there are choices. Bella mostly went the hamburg/hot dog route. I had a panini that first day (YUm, it was good), a hamburger another day and split chicken fingers with Maureen yet another (sinfully good. The kind of thing you know you could eat again but really shoudn't). We also spent some time relaxing in comfy chairs by the adult area while Bella and Taylor (who had been contacted by wave phone within nano seconds of our getting back on the ship) swam in the family pool. I remember Maureen saying she wanted to do nothing but this tomorrow, our first at-sea day: sit in a comfy chair by the pool. Uh-oh!!! There would be Navigators chuck full of activites to be enjoyed!!!! Would this be the real problem now that I couldn't go off on my own???? Well that is for tomorrow....

The show that night was Taylor Mason. Great show. We all enjoyed it. We luckily had dressed for dinner before the show. After the show Bella and I went with Taylor and Julie to Who Wants to be a Mouseketeer. We didn't get picked to play but still had fun. Dinner that night was in Lumiere's. I had escargot for appetizer which came piping hot and served in a pretty dish. The girls got bored sitting through long dinner and knew from the Navigator that Who Wants to be a Mouseketeer was happening again so they cut out quickly after their main course and the adults enjoyed coffee and dessert. Love the flexibility and freedom the ship allowed the girls.

I had gone over the "rules" with Bella several times, too many she would likely say. Must tell me if you are leaving where you told me you would be, NO going into anyone's room but ours, and no letting anyone in our room, must be back at certain time.... Bella does not get lots of freedom at home, she just turned 11. I really wound up feeling safe with her on the ship. It helped that she was with Taylor 99% of the time when she was not with us. I knew they could be trusted together.

After dinner we went to see Freddy Fusion for his adults only performance. I was really disappointed in his adult show (as were the rest in my group as I later found out). Why is it that as the hours get later comediens just can't help themselves from getting raunchy? Plus he just wasn't funny. Too bad.

Next up: Our first day at sea

Hi! I just started posting my our trip report from the same cruise! I have been so sad this week, sighing, wondering where's my room service? Where's my room steward? LOL I have GOT to book another trip to look forward to.

The strawberry soup - DELICIOUS! I think you could make it by simply buying some strawberry ice cream and letting it melt until soupy.

I missed the meet and greet. I had taken DD, DS and DN to the pool around 2 and realized there was no way I was going to get three kids out by 3:00 and my MIL had wandered off, so that was that. Oh well. If you met any particularly nice and gorgeous women on the cruise, just assume they were me!

Looking forward to reading the rest of your posts!

OUR FIRST DAY AT SEA

Something I learned is that I LOVE LOVE LOVE days at sea. Okay, sure, some of it is likely due to the difficulty I have getting around in ports with crutches and w/c. But I think I would love "at sea" days anyway due to my personality. I love doing fun things, checking things out. What I learned on this, my first cruise, is that there are SOME things to do at different times everyday of the cruise. But on "at sea" days there are TONS of things to do. And NO, you cannot possibly do everything you want to do.

We had planned to pack lots of the recommended what-nots to bring with us (including highlighters). But this was one of the things that fell off the list of importance and we did not. Luckily we were given highlighters, in different colors even, in our FE. DD loved poring over the Navigator and highlighting activites she wanted to do.

We decided to check out Topsiders for breakfast as we hadn't loved Lumiere's. This would be our first trip to Topsiders. Okay I have to say again I didn't love it. (I am really not that fussy; I love to eat, love restaurants of all calibers...). I found Topsiders to be, in a word, chaotic. It was noisy, crowded, high energy. VERY hard to move with crutches. On the up side: tons of food choices, you can't possibly not find something you like to eat. We went through a long, slow moving, line. Some of the highlights: chocolate croissants (oh yeah baby), Krispy Kreme donuts. Who cares if they aren't freshly made (told you I wasn't fussy). Freshly made omelets. Some of the "lowlights": bacon, greasy, not crispy. Got it once and never again. Mickey waffles and pancakes not hot. In the end we leave with full bellys.

I want to play bingo this morning. I had read about bingo on the ship: expensive, small number of games... But I love me some bingo and I am spending less money than I would if I were on another cruise line and checking out the casino. (How's that for rationalization)? Maureen hates bingo but we learn today that I can be dropped off and picked up; me and my travel w/c and crutches. (In case anyone is wondering I do get around on the crutches, more and more each day actually, but the ship is huge. Walking with crutches is harder than I ever would have guessed. Hard on the triceps, the palms of the hands, the wrists. So I can go short distances only on the crutches. Which puts me back to needing to be pushed in the travel w/c). Well I did end up disappointed with the bingo. I paid $50 for the computer thingy (cheapest option for the computer thingy) and they played 4 games. They weren't even 4 long games but they made them long. It is cute some of the things they sing/say with some numbers but the pace of the games overall could make you pull your eyelashes out. One by one. Why not play more games and move it along a little faster? Just sayin. Obviously I did not win. Had I won I would likely have much more positive impression about the on ship bingo :rotfl:

After bingo Maureen wants to go to a wine tasting. I forgot where Bella was at this point but she was happily, and safely, off doing something with Taylor. Maureen and I go the wine tasting which is held at Sessions. The cost is $20 per person which is reasonable. We try 2 whites, 2 reds and one champagne. We learned alot at this and found it relaxing and a fun thing to do. There were maybe 20 other people, mostly in pairs. There was one table not far from us that had two youngish couples that came together. They did their own thing, drank all the wine, ate all the chocolate, and asked for more, and talked amongst themselves the whole time. They didn't listen to all the explanation, swirl, smell... I am not sure why they came. But they didn't take away from my experience; I just found them interesting.

Lunch upstairs on deck 9 and then some time relaxing with a book at the adult pool. We also started our daily tradition of some kind of fruity or frozen drink in the afternoon. Sometimes I had drink of the day, sometimes I didn't think I would like drink of the day and had something different. I learned they make a mean frozen Mudslide up on deck 9. I think this was the day we found them playing adult pool games in the pool. You had to hit a golf ball into a hula hoop to win a drink of the day. I SOOOOO would have played if I could have stood with enough balance to hit the ball, and not myself, into the pool. Next time for sure!!

I remember being bummed when I realized it was time to get ready for our evening show. How fast a day with nothing planned flies by!!! The show that night was Twice Charmed. We loved it. The quality was all that we had heard it would be. I loved looking around at the little girls wearing their princess dresses and sitting with wide eyes. If you think about how fast a good day flies by imagine how fast the years fly by when you look at your daughter who is now 11 and wouldn't be caught dead having anything to do with a princess. She still enjoyed the show (and even admitted it).

That night is formal night. I had read that we would we see "soup to nuts" in terms of how dressed up people get for formal night. Well my experience was I saw mostly gourmet food. I saw lots and lots of tuxes. Less true "ball gowns" but many pretty dresses of various lengths. Remember we had to minimize our packing so we did not bring anthing other than casual dresses and nice top/ slacks. We were amongst the least dressed I saw all night.

Our dinner was in animator's palate but it was the "Prince and Princess" Dinner. I think the theme of the food was "around the world". We all had lobster rolls for appetizer. These were bland. We are New Englanders, sitting with more New Englanders. We know our lobster. These were not to compare to lobster rolls we get home. I think this is the night Bella ordered Pad Thai as an entree. She enjoys Pad Thai at home and I never gave it a second thought. When it arrived I could literally see the chilli peppers in it. It was way too spicy and she didn't eat beyond the first bite. Our head server, I am sorry I have forgotten his name, happened by early in the meal and noticed her untouched plate. He immediately offered to get her something else. Would she like something from the children's menu? He could get it quickly. DD was not that hungry and didn't want another entree. A few minutes later Adi, our head server, comes by and sees her plate. What's wrong? What can I get her instead? We weren't saying a word about her meal (she was telling us she wasn't really hungry anyway) but they both noticed immediately and truly wanted to rectify it. THAT is an example of great service.

This was probably one of the days we ordered room service for Bella in the afternoon. We were all excited to order room service and over the course of the week no one enjoyed it more than Bella. On different days she had BLT, Mickey bars, fruit cup, cheese and crackers, oh and the chocolate chip cookies. It was Julie who told us we must order chocolate chip cookies from room service. The ones at the buffet are ordinary but the ones from room service are HUGE. And you get like 3 or 4 of them. If you are still reading this report that is your insider's tip of the day: order the chocolate chip cookies from room service (but don't expect your kid to eat at dinner that night).

Bella was mad this night because she really wanted to do an EDGE activity at midnight. There were a couple of EDGE activities she really wanted to do that were held at midnight. I think was "invade the lab" and make flubber; another I think was free hour in the arcade. I really didn't want her out till 1 AM. I trusted the EDGE people but she is 11. Plus we were getting up early to go to Grand Cayman the next day. We ended up telling her she could stay up to midnight one night, the night beofre our next at sea day. She was mad. As it wound up as the week went on we all were geting tired and she never did make it to midnight.

NEXT UP: A FABULOUS DAY IN GRAND CAYMAN

Love the updates! Keep them coming! I know it is a lot of work but we are really enjoying it!:thumbsup2

Those chocolate chip cookies from room service are the best!! We ordered them every night with milk before bed.

can't wait to hear about Grand Cayman
