We just made reservations for a trip to the fort in July. Question for all of you is, what is the best route for us to travel from Connecticut in our fiver?

Not sure if it's the best route but we take I-95 to I-4 and take the exit toward the magic kingdom might not be the fastest or shortest but we don't have to worry about switching roads there is plenty of places to get off for fuel and food there is several KOA's along the way so there is camping spots if you need a spot to break up your trip

Welcome !!
To The Camping Boards !!

Your gonna love the Fort. And don't forget to throw a fish'n pole in the camper,,you never know when the urge to catch a Disney fish might hit you.
(and there are plenty fish'n spots. :thumbsup2 )

You will need to go around the Baltimore Tunnel in Maryland - the propane issue. You will have to look for the the go around - it will bring you to the Fancis Scott Key Bridge(if I remember the name right.) We live in Staten Island, NY. We go down the NJ Turnpike and go over the Delaware bridge - I will have to look at a map but we go through Delaware - I forget the route number to 896 to 50/301 over the Annapolis Bridge and down 301 through Fort AP Hill - it will then bring you out to 95 - one exit before King's Dominion (the amusement park). It is quite in some parts - busy in others - 2 bridges - but won't break the bank - but there is I think 1 campground near one of the bridges that I don't think I would stay in so figue stopping before leaving NJ or at King's Dominion CG (have stayed - not bad). It will add a little time to the trip but I don't have to worry about Washington, DC and the Baltimore tunnel. I have heard too many horror stories going through DC.

I have heard of problems with traversing tunnels with propane, but never any specifics. I assume these are particularly long tunnels since I have been through plenty of shorter tunnels (dozens less than a 1/4 mile in the mountains of GA/TN/NC/VA/WV) and even ones under high-rises (400 in Atlanta) and never seen any propane restrictions. When taking the ferries in NC and VA you are required to shut off your propane supply. I suspect the tunnel prohibition is more stringent. Are you allowed to traverse the tunnel with an empty tank? Or are tanks prohibited totally? Thanks for educating this southern boy!

We take basically the same route as Camping Mom with the exception of going over the TappanZee bridge in Ny instead of the George Washington Bridge.A little longer ride with less traffic. Its my understanding it doesn't matter if your propane tanks are full or not you cannot use the Baltimore Tunnel so we go over the Francis Scott Key bridge. Depending upon the day and time we will take 95 around Washington or pickup 1/301 and pick up 95 again in Richmond.

We're coming from southern NH...

Mass Pike to 84 West
to 87
to Garden State
to NJ Turnpike/95

...take 695 look around Baltimore (tunnel exclusion)

Going around DC you can take the beltway either East or West - not much difference except if you go East you can get a peek at the Capitol/Washington Monument.

Stay on 95 all the way to FL to I4 (Daytona) to FW!

We've gone straight through NYC before, but it freaks DH out pulling the TT, so we go the slightly longer, but smoother/easier way around the city and through NJ.

ETA - btw you can use EZ pass all the way to FL now. In NJ there are even high speed lanes where you maintain your speed and zip on through.
