Well, a disney world vet. Been to WDW several times, all packages through WDW Travel over several years. Today, I booked for the first time renting points through an online DVC rental service. I'm pretty excited to be staying in a deluxe resort finally.

Very excited to surprise my boys (12 and 10). I kept telling them we "may" be going this year as you never want to guarantee something and then it can't happen. But what will be real special is knowing they will get to stay in a deluxe resort -- Animal Kingdom Lodge. Super excited to tell them.

This will be a special trip for us. Had a difficult year last year and I'm proud of my kids for standing strong through it all. I'll need to be sure to tell them to get ready to sweat! We're going at the end of August.

As a DVC owner we only stay at deluxe resorts but I know you will enjoy your trip and staying at AKL may convince you to become a DVC owner...who knows !!! I have not stayed at AKL but have toured the resort and it is just beautiful and you certainly have a challenge upcoming with a trip in August...I hope you just happen to hit a cool spell for your time there.

Congrats! You will love it! We have rented points several times through owners here on the DISboards and never had any issues. We stayed at Kidani Village last December for my birthday weekend. I really liked it! If you are at Kidani, they have a great kids pool area!

We have stayed at AKL Kadani village, it is so nice. We will be there the beginning of September, staying at the Poly, we love it there. Enjoy you will love it.

We rented points last year and had a great experiences. No need to buy DVC when we can rent points. Why lock yourself in and pay those yearly fees? Only downside is you don't get two beds in the studio, only one bed and a pull out.

We just rented points for the first time, too! We are very excited about our stay at VWL. It was the only way to stay deluxe with extended family and still be affordable.

Thanks for the info everyone. Points are reserved and paid for. Really excited! Told the boys this weekend and they are super excited too -- so cool to be staying in a deluxe resort! We are like kids in the candy store LOL.

I was very impressed with the process to rent points. You read stories about people getting scammed and you have some trepidation in doing it, but it all worked out and using one of the professional services online makes the process so easy and straight forward. Can't recommend highly enough to use one of these services. In the interest of abiding by the guidelines, I won't be giving out any specific names, but google a search on renting DVC points and you'll find the top companies.

We are renting for the first time this year too! And also staying at AKV, but we are staying at Jambo. I am very excited. We rented through a private person and so far everything has gone streamingly. :)

Because those yearly fees are way less than someone pays to rent. Also you can book your own reservation, cancel and never have to involve anyone as you do you own booking. Discounts on dining, passes and so much more. Also the studios at Old Key West do have two queen beds.

On a night per night basis, owning costs less than renting; this is especially true if you buy resale instead of directly from Disney. You can always rent out points for the years you don't go.

We are staying at Kidani Village. Don't really care where we are staying, it will be a fun experience.

OK, you've piked my interest. I know starting costs for buying into DVC now is in the $14-15K range. Ballpark, what are the costs for resale and what are the annual dues?

go to the DVC boards they will be happy to answer all your questions.

for your trip - go early in the morning - then when the heat or crowds get to you - go back to the resort - you are staying at a wonderful place with a ton of things to do - you can have a good time here w/o the parks - oh go back at night - during most of the summer the parks are open late.

I have been a DVC member since 93 and still love it - it is for me worth the cost.

the thing you have to remember - is if you go and start out using all your points to stay in a 2-bedroom - you will lose money.

stick with studios or even a 1-bedroom now and then - and you will be fine. if you buy more points than you need - then rent them and use the money to pay your dues

There's a DVC resource thread stickied at the top of the DVC forums. That will give you a ton of information about DVC resorts including annual dues.

If you are only looking at studios, you may only need 80-100 pts. You can check asking prices for resales at reseller sites like the timeshare store.

Enjoy your trip. If it's great, take 2 or 3 months to research DVC in detail to see if it's a good fit.

DVC is cheaper if you are going to wdw every year anyway, but there are travel/food/ticket costs that can test your budget, so it's definitely not for everyone.

You can certainly name names. The guideline is that you need to put the whole URL of the business in your post. If it posts fine, then it's fine. (after all, the big points rental company is a sponsor of the boards and posts semi-regularly) If it's not OK, the URL will appear like this: xxxxxx Then you know that they've done something to get on the naughty list.

Giving hints, however, isn't part of the guidelines. :)

Lol, thanks for the clarification. It was the dvc rental store, dvcrentalstore dot com. wonderful service and the process was very straight forward.

Yeah, the one concern I have is we can do one big trip a year and we are getting to the point where we will be doing some road trips. I'd hate to pay for something we can't always use.
