First time flying, luggage question

I know that the carry-on dimensions are 9x14x22, how do I find out how big the "personal item" bag can be?

Check your airlines website. They will have all the baggage and carry on requirements.

For USAirways, the personal item cannot exceed 36 inches total (w + h + depth).

Thank you! I can not find the size on my airline's site, but the 36 gives me a rough idea.

It's still a little early to book our flight, but we have the option of Delta or United.

I found United's site to be vary vague, Delta's is a little better, but I still couldn't find an exact answer. I emailed Delta & the response suggests that as long as the personal item fits in the size wise box, it will be ok. Could only find out how to email United about past flights, not future questions.

The reason I need to know is because we found clearance luggage & bought 2 different sizes and need to know which to return. 1. Rolling carry-on sized that came with size 38 shoulder bags. If we can use these, we should be able to not have to check in luggage. Don't want to get to the airport & find out that the 38 bags are too big. 2. A complete set that has both carry-on & check in sizes, but our house is very tiny & would rather not have to store that if possible. Either way, something needs to be returned soon. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
