Hi
How do you manage the uncertainty of hurricane season for sailings in July/August?

What is the usual procedure of Disney, do they cancel? Postpone it? Change the itinerary/ports?

the insurance enough? What else do you take into consideration?

Thanks

I just sort of go with the flow. We have cruised during hurricane season every year for over a decade. Only had ONE cruise impacted, and that was the Hurricane Dorian cruise in 2019 where a 3-day cruise turned into a 6-day cruise to avoid the storm. Best cruise we ever went on!

Of course, I have been very lucky and I'm sure others here will share stories of their vacations cancelled or interrupted. My advice, get cruise insurance and always have a backup plan. Last minute beach vacation or trip to WDW perhaps. But don't let fear prevent you from booking.

Disney Cruise Line captains will try to avoid hurricanes and storms by changing itineraries whenever possible. This can result in skipping or changing ports. Any Disney-booked excursions will be automatically cancelled and you won’t be charged if the ship does not stop in a port. Many private excursion companies have similar policies, but you should certainly check on cancellation policies before booking during hurricane season.

If it is not possible to avoid a storm, usually because it is expected to strike near the port on the day of embarkation or debarkation, Disney may cancel the cruise. If DCL cancels, anything paid to DCL will be fully refunded, and passengers may be offered a discount if they book another cruise within a certain time period.

In rare cases, as jrapps described, a cruise may be extended while in progress if it will be difficult to get safely back to the debarkation port, and in very rare cases, a cruise may end at a different port than planned. In those rare cases, DCL will try to help passengers make arrangements to change flights and cancel or book hotels, but in these cases travel insurance would be useful because DCL will not pay for anything after passengers disembark.

If a cruise is extended, that obviously causes delays in the next cruise, which would be delayed or cancelled. DCL will issue refunds for cancelled cruises and partial refunds for shortened cruises, but any costs for changed flights, additional hotel nights, and anything else not booked through DCL are up to the passengers.

So, short answer, DCL will redirect cruises as much as possible, but trip insurance would guard against unexpected costs in the unlikely event cruises are cancelled, extended, or shortened.

Actually, cruising in July / August is not bad for hurricanes. I don't start worrying about the really bad storms until the very end of August - and September always seems to have a lot of hurricanes. There may be random pop up thunderstorms in July / August, but that is common.

Most of our cruises have been in July or August. We had two itineraries get adjusted for a storm, but we rolled with it. Otherwise, we don't even think or worry about it.

while hurricane season runs june-november, keeping in mind that storms can happen anytime, the busiest/most active part is end of august and september.

cancelations are last resort; usually they will try and sail around the storm. if it is cx then the customer would not be penalized and is usually offered a refund or rebook at a later date

What everyone else said, plus there is also the chance that they redo your itinerary entirely. For example in 2017 when Irma hit, they changed most of their easterns to westerns. There was one a few years ago that was changed from a Bahamas to a Canada.
