We just got back from our first WDW visit last week. The first 5 nights were spent at the Poly.
We were in Tahiti and liked it quite a bit, though I could see that some people may consider it a bit too far away from the "action". In addition to Kona Cafe and Ohana, there is also counter service at Captain Cook's. Captain Cook's does not have the greatest hot food choices but you can always get fresh fruit, yogurt, muffins, cereal and other basic food items there. I think it is actually open 24 hours a day.
If you hang around the lobby of the Great Ceremonial House in the early afternoon, the CMs walk around offering complimentary cookies to guests. Delicious!
Although the Poly does not have its own fitness centre, the one at the Grand Floridian can be used by Poly guests and it is a short jog from the Poly via the beach. Make sure you take the opportunity to take a stroll across the entirety of the beach front right over to the Grand Floridian. There are some really nice vistas along the way, both looking out onto Seven Seas Lagoon and the Magic Kingdom and looking back at the Poly.
Have fun. We certainly did.
