We bought into SSR back in 2004, well last week marked our very first trip using DVC points. We stayed for 5 nights at SSR and 2 nights at BCV.

The following is part 1 to my trip report. I'll add more as I get time.

This was also the first extended trip with the family to WDW (took the kids for 1 day a while back, went just my wife and I 3 years ago). We bought into DVC mainly because we were excited about going to WDW roughly every 2 years or so, prefer on-site accommodations and really prefer the extra space (not a fan of a week in a hotel room with two sets of beds). Got many great tips from everyone on this board (frequent reader, infrequent poster) that really helped to plan our stay.

Left Sat Oct 28th from Seattle to Orlando. I have way too many frequent fl yer miles from way too many business trips, so treated DD 5, DD 8 and DW to first class upgrades, which made the trip out even more special. Flew Alaska, which offers the only direct flight from Seattle to Orlando as far as I'm aware. Going direct is very nice, saves quite a bit of time. Factoring in the 3 hour time change plus the 6 hour flight, the direct flight still allows an arrival time that is not too late. We rented a car at the airport to allow for a grocery trip (we elected against the dining plan, be interesting to figure out our costs with the groceries included, may have been cheaper to do the plan. However, we decided that since this was our first trip we'd do a combination of table service venues and eating in vs. stopping very much at all at counter service locations, I'll reevaluate the dining plan on our next trip). We also stayed the first night off site, mainly because we knew we'd be getting in fairly late and I'd rather not spend the Sat night points when I know I won't be enjoying the room or the parks that day.

Checked in to SSR at 11am on Sun Oct 29th. Room was not ready, but that is OK since that is what I was expecting. Was great to be back to SSR almost exactly 2 years after the purchase. I could tell the difference in the additional vegetation growth (which was nice to see some of the plants filling in) as well as nice to see the finished buildings. When we bought, only Congress park was complete. DDs and DW headed out for some Bibbidi Bobbidi action at DtD (they loved it). I headed out to do some grocery shopping. Called periodically on the room, was not ready until 3pm. At 3pm loaded the groceries into our 2 BR unit. Was on the ground floor in the far right building of Congress park. I was not that excited about getting the ground floor but I had forgot to make that request asking not to be on the ground floor. I had instead requested Congress park with a 2 BR lockoff, and that is what I got. But we got a unit with a great view of DtD facing the House of Blues. We got a 2 BR unit because my Mom & Stepdad were arriving this day from Seattle, and they were staying in the lockoff. They were set to arrive in the evening, and we were going to meet them at the Hoop de Doo (which would be new to all of us). Returned the car at the Alamo desk at the Buena Vista Palace (I keep thinking of it as the Wyndham), which was nice. Literally took me 10 minutes to return the car and walk back to the condo. We were set, headed out to the Magic Kingdom at about 4:30pm. We had tickets to the 9:30pm Hoop de Doo, so about 8:45pm caught the boat to Wilderness campground. We met my parents at the Ft Wilderness dock in time to watch the MK fireworks and then headed into Hoop De Doo. What a great show, great food, fun all around. Was only about 1/2 full. We did the 9:30pm show mainly because of the 20% DVC discount, and also figured since we were on West Coast time, it would not feel that late to us. Considering daylight savings occurred Sat night, we were really only 2 hours off our normal clock. So it ended up feeling very late for my DDs with all the travel and running around. But they still really enjoyed it. They had transportation right at the show back to the resorts. We ended up on a bus that stopped at Port Orleans and OKW first, so took a while but not too bad. I'd recommend the 9:30 show because of the discount and the fact it was not that crowded. However, I'd recommend against it if your kids are fairly young.

What we found for the weekdays on this trip that the parks were not crowded at all. We did pull our kids out of school this week. I agonized this decision, but felt better because 1) our teachers had no problem with it and 2) my Mom was with us, and as a retired school teacher she made sure that my DDs completed their homework assignments that were sent with them. Going this past week paid off, since we did not wait in line over 20 minutes ever. We rarely used fast pass because it really was not necessary. It also shortened our stays in the park because we felt that we did not need that much time each day to see what we wanted to see. We hit MK again on Monday the 30th. Went to Liberty tree tavern for dinner and was surprised with an 'unbirthday cake'. The staff got a kick out of my reaction. Since they came up to our table and asked if it was my birthday. I looked shocked, looked around to see if they were really talking to me and then said no, they must have the wrong table. They laughed and told me it must be my 'unbirthday' and proceeded to sing me my happy 'unbirthday' song. Once I turned back to a normal shade (from the abnormal shade of red I had been), I proceeded to enjoy a very tasty 'unbirthday' cake (it really was very good). Oh the magic of Disney. We had tickets to the halloween party this night, which was really fun. The park felt crowded for the party, but the waits for any of the rides were virtually non-existent. We had our only real hiccup with the bus service this day, and a decidedly un Disney experience. Left our unit to see the MK bus pulling up. We jogged to the bus to see that there was no one at the bus station nor anyone on the bus. Made eye contact with the bus driver, he waited until we were literally in the bus stop shelter before leaving with an empty bus. My daughters were incredulous that someone would do that. The MGM Studios driver pulling up behind witnessed the whole thing and called the bus driver to turnaround and of course the driver was not answering his radio. So we waited 20 minutes for the next bus. Really nothing serious, but annoying.

Went for a run Tuesday morning before heading out. Started at Congress park, went all the way up to the new Carousel section (looks like one of the two buildings was actually open for people to stay), went back down to check in and looped around by the golfcourse and DVC preview center and back to Congress park. My pedometer tracked this at 1.6 miles, which is what I expected after seeing Caskbill's maps. We hit AK on Tuesday the 31st. Saved Expedition Everest for the end of the day. Rode it 3 times in 20 minutes, walking right up to the ride each time. Had to let people pass us in line so we could actually enjoy the queue. DD 8 at this stage had ridden every thrill ride in MK and boldly exclaimed she was ready for anything UNTIL we rode EE. After this she decided she'd play it more cautious going forward (she didn't like the whole going backwards experience). AK is such a beautiful park. Would have liked more time to just explore, but the whole party was feeling pretty tired and ready to head back. We took the kids trick or treating around SSR that night, gave them another chance to put on their costumes (they wore them to the party the night before). There were not many kids out which had the SSR CM's giving out piles of candy to each trick or treater (which obviously thrilled the kids).

Anyways, this is turning out to be longer report than I thought, I'll end part 1 right now and add part 2 later on.

Great narrative...glad to hear you enjoyed your 1st trip home.

btw, a very, merry unbirthday to you.
Must say the issue w/the bus was disturbing:confused3 glad it didn't ruin your day.

I enjoyed reading your story. How nice that there was trick or treating around the resort. We're going to go to VWL the week of Halloween next year with our DGC and family, and I've been taking notes regarding trick or treating options.

I'm looking forward to the rest of the story!

Ready for the next part. :) Thanks for starting your review. Sounds like it will be a good one.

I'm really enjoying your trip report and anxiously awaiting the next edition :thumbsup2

The "unbirthday" surprise sounds hysterical. I would have been laughing so hard if this happened to my DH. :rotfl:

That one bus driver, who took off just as you got to the bus stop, sure sounds lame. I wonder if the MGM bus driver who tried to call him on his radio reported his behavior?

Alright, I ready for more of your report! :listen:

Here is part II. No trilogy, so don't wait for part III.

On Wednesday Nov 1st we went back to MK to take my DDs to the Cinderella Royal Table lunch. They were pretty enthralled with that, and I thought the food was pretty good. I went solo with the kids while DW and my mom received peppermint pedicures and massages at the SSR spa. I was originally the driver for buying into DVC, but the spa at SSR was the clincher for convincing DW. So it was the first thing she arranged when we arranged our vacation this year and it did not disappoint. I dread to do the math, but over time the DVC discount at the SSR spa may end up paying off our original DVC investment (yes, I'm kidding, but only partly so). Took the monorail from MK to Epcot for the first time ever, that was pretty cool. No lines at Epcot, DDs both loved Spaceship Earth, the new Nemo ride, Turtle talk. Ate dinner in at the condo then DW and I headed to DtD and left DDs with my Mom. Hit the Adventurer's club for the first time ever. Knew nothing about the place, we went in on a whim and really enjoyed it although got picked on for some public humiliation within 5 minutes of going in while trying to order a drink (I avoided eye contact at all cost, pleaded with the bartended to take my drink order, it was too late as I had been singled out). DW had a blast seeing me get embarrassed in front of everyone, why couldn't she get picked on so I could have some fun? :)

Thursday we headed back to Epcot for the day. We had lunch at the Rio del Tiempo, which I like for the ambiance (although Blue Bayou at DL will always be my favorite when it comes for ambiance). This was our last night at SSR. We took the kids to DtD after a dinner in the condo. One WDW treat I always enjoy are the caramel apples you can buy. So I treated myself to a caramel apple with Butterfinger sprinkles. At least they said sprinkles, I think there were at least a couple bars worth of Butterfinger chips coated on this (the CM was packing it on layer after layer). In case you are wondering, the combination is wonderful. We packed up the bags to get ready for a switch to the BCV the next day.

Friday we called bell services to arrange a baggage transfer. They were at the room within 5 minutes. Very painless, even though we had bags for 6 people to move, plus some food from the fridge. I headed over to BCV to check in while the rest of the family finished breakfast and were going to head over to MGM. I love the Boardwalk area, and it was so nice to get to that part of WDW. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed SSR. If we were ever to do an add on contract, I'd probably buy at BCV or BWV just so it is easier to book at 7 months. But we can't wait to go back to SSR. The room was not ready at BCV, I had not made any requests for rooms at BCV in advance, so the only request I made at check in was to not be on the ground floor. I met the rest of our party at the Studios. Although the park was not that crowded, they were not running that many boats from BCYC/BW to the studios, resulting in waits that were pretty long (we even left the studios 2 hours before it closed). We called and got our room assignment, which I believe was 463/465. This was a wonderful location I found out when getting in. We had a nice view of Spaceship earth, and the studio actually had an enormous balcony due towards its location. I also liked how the master bedroom had a balcony. From the balcony we had a very good view of illuminations as well as could see the MK fireworks. Sure the road was there and you could always hear it, but was not loud enough to be a distraction. We also could hear the noise from the hallway bleed in quite a bit. More an issue in the living room, whereas the master bedroom sealed it out quite nice.

Saturday we kept open, enjoyed the pool, cruised the boardwalk. One of our goals heading into this trip was to do the kitchen sink (saw it featured on the travel channel special on the BC/YC hotels). However, my parents bailed on eating out with us, so it was just the 4 of us to tackle the sink. We gave it our best, and I'm sad to report we thoroughly failed in our efforts to finish it, but we tried.

Sunday we had a Magical express pick up for 3pm, so we spent the morning at the Studios. Once we realized that the entire state of New Jersey was flocking to the Studios, we decided to head over to Epcot to tour the World Showcase. Turns out that the entire state of NJ was not only at the Studios, but they were also at Epcot as well. Even though, it still was not too bad, just more crowded than earlier in the week. Plus I bet there were plenty of locals hitting the parks. But it was funny to hear the street performers at the Studios call out: "And where are you from? New Jersey. And you? New Jersey. And how about you? New Jersey." Given that we were not from Jersey, we figured our time had come to an end, so we reluctantly boarded our Magical Express bus and headed out.

I came away liking both BCV and SSR for different reasons. I'd love to make more trips staying in multiple resorts, but while the luggage transfer was very smooth, we still had to pack up midway. Not sure I'll do a split stay next time but I do want to try the other resorts while still getting more time at SSR. So who knows.

I also found myself comparing MK vs DL constantly. I'll give MK the edge for their Splash Mountain. I'll give DL the edge for Pirates (although the queue in MK is much cooler). I enjoy the differences in Haunted Mansion and Space mountain enough to call it a draw. And IASW drives me bananas on both coasts. MK has Phillarmagic which is cool, but DL has Roger Rabbit and Indy. I like the Tomorrowland MK decor better (and MK still has the Peoplemover), but DL has New Orleans Square. Enough reasons to visit both (I keep wishing for a west coast DVC).

Great 2nd edition! Thanks for sharing it with us. :thumbsup2

Peppermint pedicures, fun rides, smooth transition to BCV, great views and large patios, pool time, AND a kitchen sink - WOW, sounds thoroughly fulfilling and enjoyable for all!

I can't wait to make our first trip to WDW in January. We'll also be staying at SSR, taking the direct flight from Seattle to Orlando (Alaska air), and I just know that no matter how hard we try not to, we'll also compare MK to DL. That's okay though - that's part of the fun! :rotfl:

It sounds like you had a great trip.

Since joining DVC we do split trips too. I do miss staying in one place but don't think I will ever be able to convince my DH to use weekend points at a DVC resort. :sad2:

I love the "unbirthday cake!" Sounds like such a great idea. I read one report in which a mom talked abut celebrating both her son's and her own birthday day after day, meal after meal. A complete surprise sounds much more magical!

Did your BCV room have the new style sleeper in it?

No it did not. Are the new sleepers supposed to be like the ones they have in SSR? Those were pretty nice.

Yeah, the unbirthday surprise was pretty cool. And it wasn't a cheap cake either. I'm assuming they do this regularly, although it was the first I had heard of it.

I am glad to hear/read that you had such a magical trip! You are the first one who just answered my post about "being from the west" and now I just saw yours!! Everything seemed to go fairly smooth for you and looks like you had a wonderful time!!

Even with a couple minor blips, I think people need to learn to relax and take it easy! After all, you are on vacation, right!! :confused3 So ya missed a bus, (wished I would have had a sling shot for that driver though!! :rotfl: ), and you hear a little street noise.....ya gotta not worry and stress over the little things!!

I will look forward to talking with ya and seeing you on the boards!!

hugs, Deb

As a new SSR owner who has yet to actually stay there, I loved the reports. Question: As you no longer had your rental car, how are the bags transferred from SSR to BWV?

Thanks!

Thanks!

Bell Services handled everything quite easily. We called in the morning, they showed up to grab the suitcases and had some bags to put the cold storage items in. Then when we were in the room at BCV, we called Bell Services and they transfered the bags to the rooms. Pretty painless. We gave a nice tip on both ends. Allowed us to check out of SSR pretty early, hit the parks and not worry. The biggest hassle is packing up all of our stuff. I may do the mid vacation swtich again, but perhaps only if we do a longer stay.

Thoroughly enjoyed your review. We can't wait to go to SSR next summer!! I also liked your comparison of the MK and DL! :thumbsup2

Fly from SeaTac to WDW all the time, love the nonstop. We too, upgrade to first class due to all our miles. Love this flight! It's so stess free not having to worry about one flight having a late departure and worry that we won't make the connecting flight......... Wish they'd change their menu though, it's always the same!!!!!

I don't know but am certainly hoping so! Someone implied that the new BCV sleepers will be that style but I've not seen any reports of it nor anything official from DVC. But we can hope! :thumbsup2

I too enjoyed your comparisons of rides at DL and WDW. My DH tends to think all the DL versions are superior but I'm with you... it varies.

Great trip report! Sorry to hear that the sofa beds aren't replaced yet @BCV. We are leaving for BVC in 11 days! Thanks for all of the info.
