First Somewhat Disappointing Experience with DVC

Just got back from 4 nights at Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort, a 4-night stay at POFQ, and 5 nights at BWV.

Our Hilton Head experience was, as always, fantastic. It's so great there. Pleasant and relaxing and the cast members are so friendly.

It was our BWV experience that was not as pleasant. We checked in on a Sunday (which we realize is probably one of the busiest days for them). The line at check-in was long around 1:00pm which we really didn't have a problem with. However, when we found out our room locations, we were slightly perturbed. We booked a two-bedroom and a studio and requested that the two rooms be ground floor (for an elderly grandmother to be closer to things) and close together as we would be eating meals together.

Come to find out, they had the studio booked on the ground floor and the two-bedroom booked on the fourth floor! Now, we realize that these are simply requests, but it is slightly annoying that things couldn't have been closer together -- the same floor, at least!

After a little bit of a fuss and having to find a manager, the manager was able to give us rooms on the first floor. We asked if the room was going to be a handicapped room as we have heard stories here on the DIS about not wanting a handicapped room and we were assured by the manager that the studio section of the two-bedroom was handicapped but the one-bedroom section was not handicapped (I don't even know if that's a possibility, but that's what we were told). This room was not yet available, so we asked bell services to take all our luggage to the studio that was available so we could move onto MGM.

After watching Fantastmic, we arrived back at the hotel around 9:45 and finally got into our room at which point we discovered that both sections of the two bedroom were handicapped. At this point, we were already moved in luggage-wise and it was late at night, so we decided we were just going to live with it. The larger, spread-out kitchen seemed nice and we were just going to deal with it. Then, I took a shower. Little did we know that the shower head had to be removed in order to use it. If you didn't take it off its holder, it sprayed everywhere. Add to that, the toilet was a mini Rock 'n' Roller Coaster (not properly secured), it was an interesting experience to say the least. Sure, we could've complained, but that would've meant moving eight people to another room and it just would've been more of a hassle that we didn't want to have to deal with.

That being said, we had a wonderful time and the experience wasn't anything that "turned us off" from DVC in the slightest. However, it was disappointing that the request for the rooms to be in close proximity could not be honored without a fight. We could deal with the handicapped room, but we would definitely continue to request to not be in one. Sorry for the mild rant, but just wanted to get it off our chests.

i'm sorry to hear that your stay was less than comfortable.
although, i'm a little concerned that the issues that upset you were not addressed.
It seems to me that a broken showerhead and a broken toilet are serious enough quality control issues to have alerted management/maintenance.

I don't think that the showerhead was actually broken. I thought that it was purposely not "hooked" onto its base because of the handicapped issue. Since there was a handicapped seat in the shower, it would be necessary for a handicapped person to be able to hold the shower head in his or her hand. As for the toilet, it wasn't a big deal and it wasn't like it was falling off of its base. It just shook a little bit.

As the days went by, we barely even noticed these things. It was the initial shock of being in a handicapped room when we were told that it wasn't that made us notice all these little things that we probably wouldn't even have had an issue with if we were in a different room.

Our vacation wasn't ruined at all by any of this, but we were mildly disappointed for the first time in our DVC lifetime. Still, we had a wonderful vacation.

A loose and/or rocky toilet can be a safety hazzard for a person trying to transfer from a wheelchair. I hope you reported it to maintenance. I'm glad you didn't let your disapointment ruin your vacation.

I just returned from a BWV stay and we had a handicapped 1 bedroom (lockoff)

Our only big complaint was the shower... we needed extra towels for all the water on the floor...

But the BIG issue was the hand held shower. It is on a slide bar, but the 'nut' used to keep it at a certain hieght was so tight I could not undo it.... It was stuck ALL the way on the TOP. Unless a handcapped person was able to STAND and use great force, they would ahve a very poor shower.

I finally, after 2 days of monkeying with it was able to lower it. I mentioned it to the front desk, that perhaps the shower in the handicapped stall be left in the lowest position with a loose 'nut'

During our stay in a HA villa, the shower head actually down slipped while one of our friends was showering - and hit her in the head!

Even after the fact, it would be a kindness to all of us if you contact BWV about those issues for that particular room.

For future reference, we have found that maintenance is great about coming at times that are convenient for you.

The shower head should operate either in a fixed or hand held mode. It depends on each individual which way works best. Our daughter has CP and could never hold the shower head. But because she sits on the bench, the shower head needs to be lowered and then fixed at that heighth.

And of course for the majority of us who don't need that accomodation, it should not be spraying all over, sliding and hitting heads or clamped so firmly that it can't be moved.

Sorry you had some problems.

Sorry you had some problems.

I totally agree!! ANd I kept thinking, all while we were there, about if a person who could not stand, there is no way they could have adjusted the shower.... I think SOP should be to have the shower heads in the lowest position and not clamps tight AT ALL. That way those of us who can stand, can adjust it to our height, and those who can not stand, dont have to call Maintence just to shower.

I mentioned it to the front desk, but I think I will follow up with a Letter....

Laurabearz, that is an excellent idea. :thumbsup2 As you said it would then be in the proper position for those who can't stand.

Another side benefit is that perhaps any problems with the clamp would be caught more quickly by mousekeeping who could alert maintenance.

This is a great reminder for folks. Don't come to think of your requests as specifications for your reservation. They are just requests. Sometimes some of them will be granted. Sometimes none of them will be granted. The room assigners do the best they can with the available rooms, and sometimes it just doesn't work out. Be prepared.

Well said. I'm amazed that they still take requests at all.
