First round of stimulus checks deposited today

I had DD21 claim herself for the first time this year and she filed a few weeks ago. On the website yesterday it told me she was eligible but they needed her bank info (she owed and had paid by direct debit) and I was able to enter it. Just to say that I don't think under-24s are being rejected as a matter of course. The website is definitely struggling and not everyone is going to get their payment this week. I hope your DD receives hers soon.
This is hopeful! Does DD live with you? I’m wondering if that’s the issue since she lived here most of last year and is a full time college student. So we “could have” claimed her. She filed her taxes this year though using her new address so I’m not even sure the IRS would know (or care) when she moved out

I went to the IRS website to check the status of my check. Put in my 2019 tax info and it said it did not have the information needed to deposit my check automatically! The funny thing is, they had the information they needed to withdraw the money I owed them from my account!!

That’s how it was for me, too.

Same for my DS-23. Still waiting but no pending deposit in his account as of yet.

These under 24s...I still wonder if those whose parents are eligible are getting theirs. And those whose parents are NOT eligible aren't? @kelpricer I wonder if you are not eligible like me and DH are not??? ANd therefore they deem our kids 'could have been claimed as dependent'. I will say that, come November, I will be going a different direction if my DS is deemed 'could be a dependent' just because we make above a certain amount.

Because he is on his own. Not dependent on us at all. Just on our health insurance. But has his own car and apartment and full time job. Just because we can afford to take care of him, doesn't mean we should. He is an adult who needs to stand on his own...he has flown the nest. He struggles. But we did too at 23. At any rate, he is eligible...just as eligible as my 50 year old SIL who got her stimulus yesterday.
We are not eligible and did not receive anything.

Our 23 year old who filed independently received his $1200, as he should have.

Our 18 year old who we claim as a dependent is not eligible and did not receive anything.

My husband and I should be getting a check. We are eligible but pay every year so they don’t have our bank info. I’m wondering tho if she’s not eligible because she lived here most of last year But moved out in November (although I don’t know how the IRS would know when she moved out) so “we could have claimed her” and was in college. I’ve seen posts that college students aren’t the catch as a whole but could it be if they live at home as opposed to living on their own??? If that’s the case though it doesn’t explain your DS since he has lived separate from you. She’s fine with waiting for the money, it’s just not knowing if it’s coming
Where kids live has nothing to do with whether they got the stimulus or not. It is strictly based on tax filing and whether they were claimed as a dependent on someone else's taxes (which means that person receives 50% or more of their support from the person who claims them).

I receive regular newsletters from the IRS - they said will not notify you of deposits for the stimulus.

Funny how these parents were so happy to receive the deduction for their children and college credits, but suddenly they wish their kids were "on their own".

That's part of the reason we had DS file independently this year, so he could claim the college tax credit for himself for one year.

DD was not claimed as a dependent but there is question among some of us about the wording of Eligibility for them, it’s back a few pages.

Yeah, um, we've been saying that our 20somethings filed their own taxes and were NOT claimed as dependents on our (parents') taxes...NOT claimed. Yet, for some reason, they are getting the 'cannot determine eligibility' message. My DS-23 has been living on his own and working full time. He takes some CC classes and pays on his own. He is not our dependent any longer. So he SHOULD get this stimulus but the wording for eligibility says those under 24 who CAN be claimed as dependents are NOT eligible. That has us worried they are being deemed dependents even though they are not.

Correct, they all ready got money back for claiming the adult child, they could forward that money off to them. Maybe they have.

She doesn't, but I forgot to change her address on her taxes so it did still have our home address. She graduated community college in May 2019 but hasn't lived at home since August 2017.

Did not claim my DS-23. And he didn't get the stimulus.

Here is hoping Searc is correct and it's just wave 1 and my DS will be in another wave. But his same message 'cannot determine eligibility' that we also got (and we are NOT eligible) so I feel they are saying he is also not eligible. He should be. Filed his own taxes in 2018 and 2019, works full time and makes just $35K and got tax refunds both years deposited to bank account.

I don't think people should be reading into the wording like they are :magnify: at this exact moment. I really can't remember back in 2008 but it could have had the same wording. Didn't get it yesterday and don't get it at all are two different things. I know it's so frustrating though just sitting there worried about it

The entire IRS sytem is overloaded. My bank yesterday later on put a message on their front page that they were experiencing issues (I had mentioned how the website and mobile banking were broken) and then ironically said to check your stimulus status to go to the IRS webpage (which of course was overloaded).

Found this article that states these. And my DS does not fall into any of the last 3 categories so that leads me to believe they are saying he is the first category. He did file 2019 just on 4/4 and got refund in bank account on 4/13....so that could be the 3rd category, I guess. But where does he enter payment info...and why would he need to as he got refund in his bank account already??? So, no, it's not the 3rd thing. They are saying he is ineligible. But why?

The IRS released an FAQ explaining why some people are getting the message:

  • If you are not eligible for a payment (see IRS.gov on who is eligible and who is not eligible)
  • If you are required to file a tax return and have not filed in tax year 2018 or 2019.
  • If you recently filed your return or provided information through Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info on IRS.gov. Your payment status will be updated when processing is completed.
  • If you are an SSA or RRB Form 1099 recipient, SSI or VA benefit recipient – the IRS is working with your agency to issue your payment; your information is not available in this app yet.

I just read that if you filed using turbo tax or any company that may have deducted their payment from your return that the IRS doesn’t have your bank info and it has to be entered. for example; DD used turbo tax and had their fee deduction from her return. Turbo tax has her banking info because the IRS sent the money to them first so they then took their fee and then turbo tax put it in her account. This may be why she hasn’t gotten it but can’t get into the IRS to put in bank info. did you DS use someone to do his taxes?

He used Turbo Tax but paid the fee up front, did not deduct from the refund. That was 2019 and done recently (IRS refund was deposited 4/13). Not sure if he paid fee up front for 2018. DH did his taxes so I'll have him look into it.

Thank you for this. It confirms what I suspected the problem is for us - we filed for 2019 only 10 days ago, so it's most likely just because our return hasn't been processed yet.

My husband and I are not eligible. My dd who graduated college in 2018, now working and living in an apartment, filed her own taxes for 2018 and 2019 ( like your son), and she received the stimulus payment. So i think your son should be receiving his as well. Good luck!

Yep, DS filed 2019 just on 4/4. So I suspect that is the issue. And we looked at his 2018 tax filing and cannot see where the IRS refund was deposited in the bank. Maybe we opted to pay the Turbotax fee out of refund.
