First Podcast

I dare not use my real screen name for risk of being banned and I have so enjoyed the friendships I have made on here. But I feel I have to say something as aspects of this thread have bothered me.

Were the comments made during the podcast racial in nature and offensive to some people?
Yes and we should all recognize that and not condemn people for having that opinion.

Are the PodCast crew mean natured and meant to cause harm by the jokes?
My gut tells me no. I believe they were joking around and the humor just went down a certain road.

Will I still listen the Podcasts again?
ABSOLUTELY! Even though I was a little shocked byt the comments and felt it was very out of character for them (from what little I know about them) I felt this was the exception and not the norm.

The part that disappoints me the most is the stance that some people took on this board after the OP made their comments. There were people calling them names and being downright rude to them even though they had never even heard the podcast in question. People in one breath were saying that the Podcast crew had the Constitutional right to speak freely on this topic but were reprimanding the "offended" folks for exercising this same right. You can't have it both ways. "If you don't like what they have to say, close the thread."

Exchanges like this (and the attempt to bury it with pie talk) take a little bit of the magic out of the DISing experience for me and that makes me sad. Please let's all be tolerant of each other regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation, or sensitivity level. Remember that DIS stands for DISney and not DISrespectful. Take care everyone! :goodvibes

There was absolutely nothing in your comments that would cause you to be banned, so why hide behind a DISguise? If you feel strongly about this and are a regular on the DIS Unplugged board, then you should feel comfortable enough to speak your mind, if you are not a regular on this board, or don't listen to the podcast...you are judging us based on one incident.

At this point it appears to me there are a group of people that are deliberately trying to "stir the pot" and I can't help but wonder if it goes deeper than the podcast in question. And yes, everyone has a right to give their opinion, but those involved can't expect to come on this board and have us rally around you when the sole purpose is to bash the members of the roundtable that we have come to respect and almost think of as family -- it's not going to happen.

I normally steer clear of these types of threads but I can't be the only one that is honestly driven to the point of insanity with political correctness. I think in that sentence alone I offended the insane, politicians and honest drivers.:rotfl2: I truly feel bad for guys like Pete and other private media outlets who constantly have to tip toe around subjects to appease the masses. I see, hear and read things every day that I'm sure may be construed as inappropriate to myself or some other person but it's not my position to take them to task for it. Who am I to determine the context in which they speak. I have to agree with most on here that the podcast team was in fact referring to a previously aired sitcom episode that turned into a classic rapid fire hijack. I was able to hear the earlier released edited version and the newly released unedited version and I thank Pete for allowing us listeners to get an unedited feel for the roundtable discussion. I for one found neither offensive and to be honest was laughing quite hysterically over the segment. I can still picture the funny little hats.:lmao: If that makes me a jerk...so be it. Move over Costanza, the jerk store needs room for the both of us.

That's my final thought....Jerry Springer...oops, I mean Slapwhitey

Ok that is hysterical! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: We just watched that episode the other day , it's a favorite :thumbsup2

I agree with your post , I don't have the energy to walk on eggshells all the time :headache: If people want to be offended they will find a way to make things out to be offensive to them.

I don't need to chime in on the debate because everyone has the right to their opinion. I wasn't offended, but if you were, you have the right to your feelings.

But I think we can all agree that the funniest part was that Bob was very seriously trying to keep the segment going even though it had gone off on a completely different tangent. And I kept laughing as he tried so hard to start over and save the segment- Oh good hearted Bob :teeth: I think that is why Pete wanted to try and have it in there, it showed Bob's personality.

Yeah that had me laughing too. :)

Now see...here's the difference, when I heard that part I didn't think of it as a racial slur, to me if was poking a little fun at Disney and what could be their self-serving reason for having the naturalization ceremony onsite -- like they would have first crack at these people. Oh well, I guess it's all in the interpretation. Sorry if you were so offended by it.

I took it as a jab at Disney too and not at the immigrants.

Why are you people hijacking my pie thread?

...if you are not a regular on this board, or don't listen to the podcast...you are judging us based on one incident.

That was my point. People were judging the OP based on her one post even though they had not even heard the podcast.

And yes, everyone has a right to give their opinion, but those involved can't expect to come on this board and have us rally around you when the sole purpose is to bash the members of the roundtable that we have come to respect and almost think of as family -- it's not going to happen.

I don't think the OP was looking for anyone to rally. They were simply voicing their opinion. The only rallying that materialized was against her. Anyway, I too am ready to let this thread die as I am ready to go back to my normal happy DIS discussions and plan our next trip. I just wish people would respect true diversity and not feel the need to constantly tell people their opinion is wrong. Back to the MAGIC of DISney! :)

I have to disagree slightly. I may be out to lunch but I feel that if you post your concerns, displeasures or support in the format of a thread you are indeed looking for some response or "rally" as you say. You know listening to that segment that individuals are going to have issue with it but if it bothers some folks that much I believe the way to deal with it is by private email. I simply don't find it necessary to involve everyone else into the situation. That is why I tend to take issues with these types of threads. And I know they have every right to post their concerns but as stated by a PP they need to realize that this is a large and devoted community (virtual family if you wish). And if folks feel that the community is being attacked (whether that was the intention or not) they will come to it's defense.

In short, yes everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that doesn't mean it's right or wrong. But sometimes own opinion means just that...own.

I completely agree about the "own" part. :thumbsup2 But it was just the attacking nature of the posts that followed that really troubled me. And if we praise the Podcast crew for not being afraid to take the opposite stance of Disney when they were doing something wrong, why can we not take that same stance with the Podcast crew when they might have made an error in judgment? :confused3

I believe this is where the problem lies...most of us feel they did not make an error in judgement.

I have to agree 100% with this quote. It is getting old. There is a thing called karma and sometimes it bites you in the butt. Let it go. Move on. This board is not the place for it.

Those of us who feel like family here think it was pokeing fun at Disney not at the immigrants. Dont turn it into something it was not meant to be.

Hey guys. I am not going to get into the debate of what was said on the podcast and whether it was right or wrong or offensive or not. But I did want to share an observation.

I have not been as active lately on the boards, because I am planning an upcoming Alaskan Cruise in July. Just like the DIS has helped me and so many of us learn and plan for our Disney vacations, I went out in search of some Cruise/Alaska boards to get information. I joined one or two rather popular boards and let me say I was quite surprised about the unfriendly and borderline nasty attitude of many of the forums and posters. On one board I did not even post because many of the threads would just ended in bickering and insults.

To sum up, my time away has made me appreciate the friendly, helpful and familial nature of these boards, in specific this Podcast forum, I hope it never changes.

Oh and if anyone has done an Alaskan Cruise, and wants to share some advice, I am all ears:thumbsup2

What is this supposed to mean? :confused3 People that disagree with you will have bad karma?

Those of us who feel like family here think it was pokeing fun at Disney not at the immigrants. Dont turn it into something it was not meant to be.

Let's be honest, if it was truly poking fun at Disney, would they have mentioned Holiday Inn recruiting them?

Dont turn it into something it was not meant to be.

In your opinion.

You know, I just went back to page one and started reading this thread from the beginning and no one was attacking the OP. For the most part people were sorry she felt the way she did and urged her to listen to other podcasts to get a true understanding of the group dynamics. It was a couple of subsequent posters that caused the thread to go downhill. And the whole pie hijacking was just a way to remove the heat that was being generated...instead of making lemonade out of lemons, they were just going for lemon meringue instead.

Obviously there's people on both sides of the fence here but as long as we treat each other civilly, I think everything will be just fine and today's witch hunt can be cancelled due to sunny weather (or perhaps a pie social). :teeth:

Looking at this as an outsider to the USA, nothing on that show came over to me as being derogatory towards immigrants per se - but perhaps to the way that parts of the American employment system can sometimes treat them? As an example, we normally stay at Port Orleans Riverside and even as tourists we can't fail to notice that the racial balance in the housekeeping staff at the resort is wildly different to that at (say) the front desk at the Grand Floridian. I suspect that sort of imbalance is what started the discussion.

The comments about looking "special" in the 4th July hat were maybe a little less comfortable to dismiss, but I still did not find them at all offensive within the context. Let's put it this way, there are a lot worse phrases that could have been used...

I could see the OPs point if and only if the Podcast crew came up with the majority of their jokes on their own in this segment. They didn't. Many of the jokes were off of Will and Grace and written by a team of writers who only knows their ancestral descent. The reason I state this is simple, I see this show as well, it comes in my living room (or it did for many seasons with much of the same type of comedy between Karen and Rosario) and I don't remember there ever being a public outcry over the humor. In fact it won MANY Emmys, Golden Globes, and SAG Awards during its tenure on NBC.

I just don't understand how repeating a joke one sees on television, award winning television at that, is considered racist by so many.:confused3

And before you fire back with, "There were other things said about hotels, maids, and Elian Gonzales." This is the world we live in, sometimes it is not pretty at all. That is the nature of comedy, to shine a light on the darker sides of our world and in a way make us laugh a bit, but also make us more aware at the same time.

I have stayed mostly quiet about this topic... but I think I am gonna throw in a couple of my thoughts.

Taken out of context and/or if that was the first show someone had ever listened to... it could be easily interpreted as less than politically correct.

If you have listened to many, or a lot of, or all of the shows... it is a lot easier to understand that sometimes the humor gets silly, sometimes sillier than others.

I am not defending anything, nor endorsing anything... everyone gets to have their own opinion. If anything, I have found that rules, etc. on the boards are fair when it comes to content and the like. I've gotten my hand smacked more than once for letting something get a little to personal, or making a comment that was misunderstood. I'm OK with that, the rules are what makes the boards a pretty darn good place to hang out on the intertubes, because everyone trys to keep it light and friendly.

Much like the thread on gay marriage, not everyone has to agree on everything, and there is a reason there is more than one channel on TV (400 channels, and never anything on I wanna watch anyway). I don't think anyone would persecute anyone else for having an opinion, I am a life long holder of unpopular opinions... I get over it. It shows that the boards are fair and balanced since this is a heated topic, that will stirr a lot of debate for a while longer no doubt. No one has been censored, or banned or kicked. I'm still breathing, so I am having a good day.

Being in the group of minorities that are often persecuted, I get that sometimes ya have to take it all with a grain of salt. Life is too darn short to sweat the small stuff. Let's take that lesson from Bawb to not sweat the small stuff... and let bygones be bygones. No reason to dwell in the house of the negative, heck I can turn on the news and find a reason to scream at the TV everyday. In hale, ex hale... they can't hit ya, well they mostly can't.

I was just about to enjoy a piece of apple pie a la mode and then this pops up. Are you serious? :confused3

Prize Winner = Carte Blanche (nothing you say is wrong)

Once again, I was not offended enough to stop listening to the podcast and I respect your opinion in terms of your perspective on the show. All I ask that we respect the perspectives of others.

I assure you there will be a day when a comment touches on one of your hot buttons and you will take offense. Hopefully those around you will respect your right to take offense and condemn you for doing so.

Now on to my pie. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
